RE: ASSAULT ON INDIA: A BRIDGE TOO FAR?

Post by LoBaron »

AdmSpruance, I just had the pleasure of reading your AAR from the very beginning to the current
turn.

I am especially impressed with your operational planning and your focus on intelligence data
to decide on your next moves. You are putting up a really impressive game against a capable opponent.

Concerning the Philippine defense strategy: This surely must have delayed many of Erstad´s further deployments. At
some time I began to wonder why he is not at least using float planes to scout at the
most obvious approach routes. The USAFFE fights or dies with the availability of supply, except if the IJA
brings more than the original forces, so cutting off reinforcements should be #1 priority to any JFB.

SWPAC GOES ON THE OFFENSIVE

Post by racndoc »

LoBaron.....thanks for your comments. There seems to be a problem with the game engine in regards to naval search picking up single ship TFs....its pretty easy to sneak a single ship through your opponents naval search. Dave had to make surface TFs and have them search the sea lanes to finally interdict my blockade runners. Then Dave returned me the favor by invading with single ship TFs far behind my lines in the New Hebrides.

Interpreting the sigint is a double edged sword....Dave feeds me bad intel non stop and I only get the occasional intel nugget by sifting through a lot of contradictory data. Still...the whole body of sigint has prevented Dave from really catching me offguard anywhere critically important and has allowed me to denude certain fronts and theatres to reinforce the most threatened ones(and begin a very early counteroffensive into the Solomons). My Luzon defense has certainly absorbed most of the IJA SAA (after the fall of the DEI)and prevented Dave from really launching a full scale Japanese Phase II offensive.

7/19-7/20/42

SUBS

SS Wahoo puts a fish in xAK Tonegawa Maru near Wakkanai.

SS O19 lands a torpedo on CA Haguro near Singapore....this CA was participating in the Japanese naval actions off Akyab and may be indicating that the Combined Fleet is redeploying to the south Pacific from the Bay of Bengal.

SS RO-34 is hit by 6 DCs from an USN ASW TF near Tassafaronga.

SS Pompano sinks xAK Midori Maru off Shikukan.

SS KXIV sinksw TK Shoyo Maru off Brunei.

PHILIPPINES

Dave has heavily reinforced Luzon. He now has the 5th, 16th, 18th. 48th and parts of the 4th and 33rd Divisions. Japan now has 2400 AV at Clark opposing 1636 Allied AV.

SOPAC

The infantry formations of I Amhibious Corps complete their march through the jungle on Guadalcanal and reach Tassafaronga. They will rest this turn as the armor arrives and then an assault will be launched on the Japanese garrison there. There appears to be a lot of IJN shipping activity off Tassafaronga(even with the minefields there)...Dave may be starting to withdraw by sea...... so Im sending a cruiser force there next turn to investigate.

A fast transport TF reinforced Tulagi with both troops and supplies.

SWPAC

The 22nd Marine Regiment storms ashore at Milne Bay. A shock attack is ordered against the IJN naval guard unit defending there next turn.

Admiral Hill's Amphibious TF will land the 132nd Regiment at Woodlark Island next turn. Carrier AC and land based AC from Rossel Is. cover both invasions.

CL Boise and DD Blue collide as the Allied Tfs manuever off New Guinea and both ships will need to return to port to repair extensive damage.

SWPAC

After repeated aerial and naval bombardments.......the 22nd Marine Regiment overruns the IJN naval guards at Milne Bay.....the Japanese stragglers are forced back into the endless jungles of New Guinea. SWPAC has re-established a position on the mainland of New Guinea and Milne Bay will become the HQ for the recapture of Papua.

Meanwhile.....the 132nd Regiment storms ashore at Woodlark Island only to find it deserted. If you look at the map from the last post.....Woodlark stands out in the middle of the Solomon Sea...poised as a dagger aimed at New Britain and Rabaul.

Dave wasnt sitting still during all of this.....he staged several squadrons of fighters and bombers into Rabaul and Lae and a major air battle broke out over the Solomon Sea as Bettys attacked the Allied carriers and amphib TFs. When the smoke cleared......Japan lost 103 AC to 40 Allied AC. In A2A Japan lost 83 AC vs 14 Allied AC. Plane losses include 40 Betty, 14 A6M2s, 10 Nells, 10 A6M3s, 10 Oscars, 6 P-40Es and 3 P-39Ds.

I will drop off a "standard base package" at both Line Bay and Woodlark: 2 seabee units, 1 USN BF and 1 USAAF BF. This will give the Allies the ability to service 100 AC and also have naval support for unloading future transport TFs. Later as the bases grow....additional BFs will be added.Milne Bay especially will be built up to base 400 AC on a level 8 airbase.

SBDs pound an IJN transport TF off the north shore of New Guinea:

Morning Air attack on TF, near Buna at 99,129

Weather in hex: Partial cloud

Raid spotted at 49 NM, estimated altitude 8,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 19 minutes

Allied aircraft

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
xAKL Toshin Maru, Bomb hits 5, and is sunk
xAKL Fukuyama Maru, Bomb hits 1, and is sunk
PB Isshin Maru, Bomb hits 2, and is sunk

Aircraft Attacking:
6 x SBD-3 Dauntless bombing from 2000 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 1000 lb SAP Bomb
5 x SBD-3 Dauntless bombing from 2000 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 1000 lb GP Bomb

Heavy smoke from fires obscuring xAKL Toshin Maru
Heavy smoke from fires obscuring xAKL Fukuyama Maru
Heavy smoke from fires obscuring PB Isshin Maru

Dave staged in more squadrons to Rabaul for next turn.....recon shows 130 fighters and 100 bombers there. Im increasing CAP and LRCAP over all the TFs in the Solomon Sea.

SOPAC

The 5 US Army and Marine tank regiments arrive at Tassafaronga.

Next turn I Ampibious Corps will launch an assault on the IJA 65th Brigade entrenched there.

PHILIPPINES

I was trying to withdraw but the Japanese air force slowed the Chinese down and then Dave shock attacked before I could exit the hex.

Still....Id consider this a pyrrhic(sp) victory for Japan as they had more squads killed/diabled than the Chinese. Im ordering a full scale withdrawal from coastal China now and evacuating Nanchang and Kiukiang on the way as the Chinese will establish a new defensive position in rough terrain 2 hexes SE of Changsha. Only armeegruppe Wenchow will remain on the coast to prtect its vital supply source. Ive also evacuated Hankow and Wuchang and China is basically back to its 12/41 start line.

In the south....the Chinese have re-entered Canton and are again sieging it.

Im taking full replacements with the Chinese now....350 squads/mo.....between the corps of armeegruppe Wenchow and the Red Guard in India.

I dont seem to be having any supply issues in China even though the Burma Road was cut way back in Dec. 1941. In fact...I seem to be building supplies in northern China now that we have retaken Loyang/Tsiaotso/Chengchow. Sian was down to 2000 supplies a couple of months ago and now it over 4500 supplies and growing.

SWPAC

Seabees and base forces are dropped off at Milne Bay and work begins on level 1 ports and AFs there.

The 132nd Regiment secures Woodlark Island. I can't overstate how critically important Woodlark Island is from both a strategic and operational standpoint. Not only will a level 2 AF at Woodlark allow us to base DBs and TBs that can interdict the sealanes to Munda and Shortlands.......but Woodlark together with Milne Bay and Rossel virtually isolate Port Moresby and the Torres Strait from the Japanese Imperial Fleet. Sure....the Japanese navy could still reach Port Moresby from the DEI....but PBYs at Darwin will give several days notice of their arrival.

Once our new airfields are operational at Portland Roads and Milne Bay.....SWPAC will invade both Port Moresby and Horn Island and re-open the Torres Strait.

Once the Torres Strait is open we can begin to develop Darwin as a major base.

Once the base at Darwin is developed we can threaten the soft underbelly of Japanese defenses in the southern DEI.

It will probably take awhile to elimate Japanese resistance here but the remaining Japanese forces on Guadalcanal are doomed.

The railroads in southern China are busy as troops are railed into Changsha. We are building a new defensive line 2 hexs E and SE of Changsha.

Japan has 25 LCUs massed on the Katha/Myitkina highway. We have 1350 AV with 3 British anti-tank regiments waiting for them in Myitkina. Another 2000 AV outside of Kalemyo threatens the Japanese rear.

Now that we've pulled back within a hex of Kalemyo everyone is in supply again. The supply situation as a whole has improved in Burma. The AF at Dimapur is now up to level 5 and the AFb at Kohima is level 3....supplies seem to be flowing much better now into Imphal and Kalemyo.

SWPAC

The amphib TF at Milne Bay completes unloading of construction engineers. BFs and supplies. The port and AF are already 70% to level 1 so they should be functional in 1 more turn.

At Woodlark Island....engineers BFs and supplies begin to offload this turn. The port and AF are 30% to level 1. Land based fighters at Rossel Island will cover the unloading here and the Allied carriers will retire to Luganville to replenish their flight ops, refuel and take on plane replacements. After Japan lost another 81 AC over the Solomon Sea 2 turns ago.....over 160 Japanese AC were lost over 2 turns.....the Japanese air forces were pretty much stood down this last turn.

I have a list of 14 bases to assault in the near future in SWPAC/SOPAC and a list of 20 LCUs that are prepping for the assaults so I made a flow chart to keep track of where all the LCUs are and who is prepping for what objective. Things will quiet down in SWPAC for a bit as Milne Bay and Woodlark build up and the offensive will now switch back over to SOPAC.

The Japanese units remaining at Tassafaronga are beginning to be wiped out by attrition now.

Amphib forces again converge at Luganville as SOPAC prepares for its next advance into the central Solomons. USAAF medium and heavy bombers at Lunga and Rennell Island continue to keep the Japanese AFs at Munda and Shortlands 100% neutralized.

The IJN sub menace seems to be greatly reduced now as all USN DDs have completed the latest ASW upgrades available and the Allied ASW AC continue to improve their level of training. Three IJN subs were hit hard this turn near Tassafaronga:

CV Saratoga remains on the line with her torpedo damage temporarily repaired....so far the patches in her hull are holding.

PHILIPPINES

All quiet on Luzon as Dave is content to bombard Clark by land and air. Japan is now down to 2000 AV at Clark....they lost 450 AV in the last assault.... basically an entire division. Allied AV at Clark holds at 1500 with 900 AV in reserve at Manila. I think that I will run out of supplies here before I run out of combat troops so Im holding on the Manila( and its 100 supplies/turn) and may make my final stand there as opposed to Clark/Battan.

Even though I have expended a lot of supplies in the battle for Clark there remains around 30,000 supplies spread throughout southern Luzon.

The Japanese armor is chewing the Chinese up here and the stack will probably get killed next turn.

It doesnt appear as if Japan has a gepgraphical strategy to win the war in the CBI. First.....Japan broke through in the far north and could have threatened the Chinese oil supply in western China but the breakthrough was never exploited. Then Japan broke through W of Taiyuan and the road to Sian was open but there was no follwoup here. Then Japan broke through a couple of turns ago E of Nanchang but now thoose troops are withdrawing toward Hangchow....and the Chinese will re-establish their position E of Nanchang as they re-established their defensive position W of Taiyuan..... Ive illustrated this on the screenshot for this turn.

In Burma....Japan withdrew from Akyab after an amphibious assault there and this turn the Allies recapture Akyab:

Ground combat at Akyab (54,45)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 7867 troops, 95 guns, 67 vehicles, Assault Value = 266

Defending force 186 troops, 1 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 5

It appears as if the Japanese strategy in this theatre is just to isolate pockets of Allied troops against overwhelming Japanese force and destroy them.... ie just a battle of attritition. After making such an early effort to sever the Burma Road.... Im surprised that Dave isnt trying to starve the Chinese by capturing Wenchow/Loyang/Chenghcow/Tsiaotso/Wuchow and other front line Chinese bases that produce supplies.

Dave had massed the IJA panzer korps in Canton....and I built an anti-tank trap 2 hexes away at Wuchow but the attack never came. Now IJA armor is massed in Burma and Ive built an anti tank trap at Myitkina....but so far no assault. The IJA 15th Army and the Southern Army have been prepping forever for Myitkina.

Sigint reported this turn that Southern Army was loaded on an xAKL heading to Rangoon so maybe Dave is just waiting for his command HQ to arrive. I have corps and command HQs 100% prepped for Myitkina. Transport AC will begin to airlift the US 31st Regiment from China into Myitkina this turn.... their experience and 18 anti-tank guns will come in handy in case the assault on Myitkina finally materializes.

SWPAC

Milne Bay now has a level 1 port and AF.

Woodlark Island has 75% completion of a level 1 port and airfield. The amphibious TF completes unloading at Woodlark and heads back to Luganville.

Deboyne Island has now completed 90% of a level 1 AF.

SOPAC

Dave evacuates the remnants of his troops from Tassafaronga before we can launch another assault. Engineers begin construction of a fighter strip at Tassafaronga while the armor and combat troops begin the arduous march back through the jungle to Lunga.

The Allied carriers will reach port at Luganville next turn and take on fuel and replacements.

Another fast transport TF resupplies Allied troops on Tulagi. We now outnumber the Japanese on Tulagi by a factor of 265 AV to 125 AV. Allied BBs continue to naval bombard Tulagi to build up experience levels.

Japanese bases at Shortlands and Munda remain 100% suppressed.

PHILIPPINES

Dave reinforces on Luzon and now has 8 artillery LCUs bombarding in addition to 5 divisions at Clark.

CBI

Dave heavily bombs Bhamo and marches in a division this turn. We have been airlifting supplies into Myitkina since early 1942 so Bhamo doesnt really affect us one way or the other.

Another 20 IJA LCUs begin their final advance into Myitkina. Allied transport AC continue to airlift the 31st Regiment and another SWPAC towed tank destroyer battalion into Myitkina so our supply levels have dropped a bit but we should be plenty ready should any IJA armor appear. Lots of air should be engaging in the skiies over Burma/India next turn. I have a forward level 2 AF at Kalemyo now so am staging in a BF in from Imphal.

I may be having trouble supplying my troops in Myitkina by air but how will Dave supply any of his troops NE of Shwebo once our 2000 AV army outside of Kalemyo emerges from the jungle?

CBI

My last post was inaccurate....the base NW of Myitkina is not Bhamo but is Warazup. The IJA Imperial Guards Division is at Warazup.

Over a dozen aerial attacks by over 80 bombers pounds the Imperial Guards Division....its fatigue and disruption must be sky high now.

The Japanese air force doesnt engage so their is no massive air battle over Burma. No IJA attack at Warazup....maybe its just a diversion.

The main body of the IJA 15th Army bears down on Myitkina. Allied transport AC continue to fly in reinforcements and supplies to Myitkina.

In China......Japan invades at Kwangchown for the 2nd time in the war and captures it.

SWPAC

A level 1 port and AF is completed at Woodlark Island.

Deboyne Is. finally completes a level 1 AF. SWPAC now has a cluster of 4 bases with airfields that have overlapping fields of coverage.

SOPAC

The airbase at Lunga reaches level 7.

Allied carriers return to port at Luganville and refuel and take on replacements.

Amphib transports load assault troops, engineers, BFs and supplies for the next phase of the SOPAC offensive in the Solomons.

The total of Allied supply on Luzon drops below 30,000. Clark is very low on supply as most of the supplies are dispersed throughout southern Luzon.I will soon need to make a decision on where to make my last stand here. Since the Alies now outnumber the Japanese on Luzon by over 50%....Im leaning towrads making my Alamo at Manila.

Im surprised that it took so long for Dave to assault this critically important supply source for China. Regardless.....I will defend it to the last Chinese peasant even if isolated from the remainder of free China. Dave evidently wasnt expecting the Chinese forces to be so large here as his troops are now withdrawing from the hex.

In Burma....some 20 IJA LCUs invest Myitkina. Meanwhile....some 2000 Allied AV emerge from the jungle adjacent to Shwebo and cut the Mandalay/Myitkina highway.

Another SWPAC towed tank destroyed battalion arrives at Karachi. Next turn it will be railed to Ledo and then airlifted to Myitkina.

SWPAC

Portland Roads completes a level 1 fighter strip.

As Milne Bay/Woodlark/Deboyne/Rossel continue to build up......SWPAC begins planning for its next offensive to re-open the Torres Strait and re-establish a SLOC to Darwin.

SOPAC: SOLOMONS CAMPAIGN PART II.....CENTRAL SOLOMONS

Admiral Hill's amphibious TF will begin landing assault troops at Rekata Bay next turn. The invasion will be covered by some 130 fighters based at Russell Is. The Allied carriers will patrol a bit to the south of the invasion in case KB shows up. I havent spotted KB in over 2 weeks and they could be anywhere..... including just north of Rabaul.

SOPAC objectives here in the central Solomons will be Rekata Bay and Vella LaVella. Capture of these 2 bases will advance Allied land based airpower a couple hundred miles to the north and help to isolate the Japanese base at Munda. Allied carriers can then retire and the Yorktown class CVs can complete their 7/42 upgrades.

CVE Copahee departs Seattle for Oahu and then the south Pacific. I will not use her in a replenishment mode. I moved off her 24 plane SBD-3 squadron and disbanded it to provide more DBs for replacements. Im having trouble now even replacing my DB operational losses. The F4F-4 squadron will be enlarged to 28 fighters and its pilots will be trained up on the way out to the south Pacific. CVE Copahee will be the 1st of my CVEs to provided a point defense for amphibious invasions. I will receive 5 more CVEs to augment this before the end of the year.

VMF-111, VMF-121 and VMSB all achieve carrier trained status and will be invited to the tailhook party on the 3rd floor of the Las Vegas Hilton next year.

SOPAC

The 148th Regiment and the 24th Sep Regiment storm ashore at Rekata Bay only to find it nearly deserted. They will secure the island next turn as a 2nd amphib TF begins to unload BFs and construction engineers.

An amphib TF with the 2nd Marine Regiment leaves Luganville to rendezvous at Lunga with another amphib TF loading the 164th Regimwent. Together they will invade Vella Lavella in 4 days.

Tassafaronga completes a level 1 fighter strip.

PHILIPPINES

Dave unexpectedly withdraws 2 divisions from Clark to Iba. Im not sure if he is just going to R&R them for a bit or if he is going into siege mode at Clark.

CBI

Japan captures Kwangchowan by amphib assault and also invades at Pakhoi. Yet another amphib TF lands troops and supplies at Wenchow. Looks like Dave is getting a bit more serious about Wenchow.

In Burma.......Dave orders a bombardment at Myiitkina to see what cards we are holding:

Dave's got 3 divisions and 9 armor LCUs at Myitkina. This will be a classic example of an irresistable force(armor) being applied against an immoveable object(anti-tank guns in fortified heavy terrain).

Now that Eastern Army has interdicted the rail road and secondary highway from Mandalay I dont see how Japan can maintain sufficient supplies for an offensive.

I actually like this setup. It seems like virtually the entire Japanese SAA is now pinned in place between Burma and Luzon. The rest of the map(ex-China) is free and clear.

SOPAC

The 2nd Marine Regiment and the 164th Regiment go ashore at Vella Lavalla but encounter minimal opposition. Dave had been sending in reinforcements by transport AC here a week ago but evidently he has changed his mind and pulled everyone out. The island will be secured next turn and we will begin landing construction engineers and BFs.

The capture of Vella Lavella will really help to complete the cordon around Munda and make the Japanese position there untenable.

Munda and Shortlands remain 100% damaged from the daily Allied air strikes.

Tassafaronga completes a level 2 AF and newly captured Rekata Bay completes a level 1 fighter strip. Fighters are staged into Rekata Bay this turn to cover the amphib landings at Vella Lavella.

SWPAC

SWPAC completes a level 2 AF at Deboyne Island.

The USMC 1st Division and the Australian 7th Division continue to prep for the upcoming assault on Port Moresby.

PHILIPPINES

Dave withfraws most of his beat up troops from Clark to Iba so they can rest and recover disabled squads......there are now 22 IJA LCUs at Iba.

Dave continues to hit Clark daily with aerial and ground bombardments but we are basically out of supplies now at Clark so the airbase supply hits are causing no reduction in supply on Luzon...we have over 25000 supplies dispersed around southern Luzon and that level has been holding pretty steady with the 100 supply/turn output at Manila.

DEI

SS Trusty laid a small minefield in the river estuary off Palembang and several IJN victims struck mines this turn:

TF 65 encounters mine field at 49,90

Japanese Ships
PB Nichiro Maru
xAKL Suzan Maru, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
xAKL Nanka Maru, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

2 mines cleared

TF 16 encounters mine field at 49,90

Japanese Ships
PB Karimo Maru, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
PB Nishho Maru
PB Hokutai Maru, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

3 mines cleared

Thats a tough way to clear mines.

CBI

Dave rests his troops at Myitkina and warazup. Allied medium and heavy bombers pound the Imperial Guards Division at Warazup.

In China......Dave moved his big manuever army from Hangchow to Wenchow:

He is also hitting Wenchow with naval and aerial bombardments plus amphibious supply drops.....Ive basically run out of supply there now. Looks like Dave is pretty serious about taking Wenchow now and there is not too much I can do to stop it.

THE AIR WAR

Its been a little over 2 months since I last posted plane losses.

Japan has now lost 4009 AC vs 3371 Allied AC. Here is a screenshot of Japanese plane losses by type. Note that losses of just 3 fighter plane types..... the A6M2, Oscar and Nates....make up over 50% of all Japanese plane losses.

THE AIR WAR........CONTINUED

In A2A....Japan has now lost 1733 AC vs 1452 Allied AC or about 20% more.....about the same A2A loss ratios as we had when I last posted on this 2 months ago.

Here is a screenshot of Allied plane losses by type. The Hurricane IIb has dropped a few positions from the 3rd place ranking it had 2 months ago.....I think that this is indicative of the air war that has been raging over the Solomons where the CBI has become almost a secondary theatre(at least for the Allies).

The other thing that sticks out for me are the relative A2A losses for the B-17E and B-17D models. We've lost 2x B-17Ds in A2A vs B-17E losses even though the B-17Ds have been almost completely retired and the B-17Es have conducted 15x-20x as many sorties over the course of the war.

And finally here is a screenshot of the top Allied pilots. Hurricane drivers still make up 6 of the top 10 and 11 of the top 20 Allied pilots. For the first time Im seeing P-39D and P-38E pilots in the top 20.

The 2nd Marine Regiment and the 164th Infantry Regiment annihilate the remaining Japanese on Vella Lavella:

SOPAC construction engineers and BFs immediately began to unload at Vella Lavella after it was secured.

BB North Carolina continues to bombard the IJA troops on Tulagi to build up experience and wear the Japanese down.

BB South Dakota traverses the Panama Canal and begins its voyage across the south Pacific to Noumea. I think that her night expereince is only 38 so she will require much training before she can be commited to surface engagements.

Allied carriers begin to withdraw from the Solomon Sea. This marks the end of SOPAC's central Solomons Campaign. The ball will now go to the court of SWPAC as they will resume their offensive to recapture Papua. The 1st step will be to re-open the Torres Sraits.

CBI

A disasterous turn for the Allies both on land and in the air.

It seems as if the weather was good on the Burma side of the border...so all the Japanese planes flew. But the weather was poor on the Indian side of the border.....thunderstorms and rain over the Allied airfields at Ledo, Imphal, Kalemyo and Chittagong. I had switched targeting for Allied bombers from the Imperial Guards Division at Warazup to the 1230 IJA AV stack sharing the hex NE of Swebo with my 2000 AV Eastern Army. Dave flew 80 A6M2s and Oscars on LRCAP over the hex and my sweepers either didnt fly or they didnt sortie until it was too late. The bombers attacks went in piecemeal and my escort fighters were crushed.

When the smoke cleared the Allies had lost 100 AC to 61 Japanese AC. In A2A....the Allies lost 66 AC to 29 Japanese AC. Individual plane losses included 33 A6M2s, 22 Oscars, 13 Hurrican IIbs, 12 Hurricane IIcs, 7 Fulmars, 9 Kittyhawk Is, 6 Moawks, 6 P-400s, 7 Hudson III(LR) and 18 Lysanders.

I didnt know exactly how many IJA troops were sharing my hex with the 2000 AV Eastern Army 1 hex NE of Shwebo....but I did know that there were another 22 IJA LCUs in Shwebo that were rapidly approaching. So I had given orders to Eastern Army to withdraw 1 hex to the NE to go from clear terrain to a jungle hex....and also to advance on the IJA garrison at Katha. I knew that my B Sqn Hussars didnt have enough movement to exit the hex this turn but I thought that the rest of Eastern Army would make it. I_almost_ cancelled the movement orders for Eastern Army knowing that my army was bigger than the IJA forces but I was concerned with the 22 LCUs approaching from Shwebo.

Well Dave launched a shock attack and caught 4 LCUs left behind:

Ground combat at 60,44

Japanese Shock attack

Three of my units were destroyed including the Eastern Army Command HQ. dave took a huge gamble here. He shock attacked thinking that most of my army would still be in the hex and he wanted to get a better adjusted AV. If I had cancelled my movement orders for the entire army he would have been slaughtered in a 1:2 shock attack leaving himself open for annihilation by an Allied shock attack the following turn. Ive done this to him in China several times earlier in the war.

To make matters worse....I redirected my bombers away from the IJA troops at warazup and then dave shock attacked with them and captured Warazup:

Ground combat at Warazup (63,41)

Now Dave has captured the base between Myitkina and the Indian border. Its sort of like being cut off but I wasnt drawing any supply from India to Myitkina anyway. All supply to Myitkina is being flown in. And as long as my troops are interdicting the railroad and highway from Mandalay to Myitkina Japan will be needing to fly in supplies to continue their offensive. So Im not sure who really is surrounding whom here. Ive got reinfocements on the way from Kalemyo including 18th UK but eastern Burma is becoming very convoluted now.

I learned from my 1st game of AE that the OOB of Tenth Air Force is insuffucient to gain air superiority over the CBI so I have reinforced India with several USAAF fighter and bomber squadrons. I also sent 3 VMF fighter squadrons with obsolete Texan trainers to India.... the thought here was that they would quietly train in India until 1943 and then Id unleash the Corsairs and the USMC pilot pool on Japan.

Well the air war isnt working out for the Allies currewntly in the CBI.....and it seems as if dave has conceded complete air superiority to the Allies in the Solomons and SWPAC.....so Im turning off replacements for all 2E and 4E bomber squadrons in SOPAC/SWPAC and will be trying to upgarde my Bolo squadrons in India as quickly as possible to the new B-17Fs, B-24Ds and B-25Cs that began arriving this month. Im also converting one of my VMF Texan squadrons at Calcutta over to F4F-4s as I have over 80 F4F-4s in the pool now.

Dave has quietly developed several airfields in central/eastern Burma and my worry is that he will interdict my transport AC flying supplies into Myitkina.... and then I will probably be evicted from Burma altogether.

For once.....China is quieter than Burma. Dave launched his big assault at Wenchow but the Chinese were able to throw the Japanese back with hevy losses:

Ground combat at Wenchow (89,58)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 87771 troops, 719 guns, 222 vehicles, Assault Value = 3220

Im starting to get hammered here but at least the rest of China is quiet for the time being.

Im still building supplies at Sian, Chungking and Changsha so Im turning on replacements for more LCUs across China.

In Burma....Dave pulled most of his armor from Myitkina after it was decimated by our anti-tank trap and now he is sending it W to reinforce Katha. I have 4 armor regiments heading for Katha and we may have a major tank battle there.

All RAF and USAAF medium bombers were placed on supply transport to send in more supplies to Myitkina. Half of my fighters in the theatre swept Myitkina while the other half swept the 1200 AV IJA stack approaching our Eastern Army on the Mandaly/Myitkina highway/railine. There were no bomber attacks or even A2A engagements this turn which makes me wonder if maybe Dave had most of his fighters ALSO sweeping Myitkina while maybe his bombers were transporting supplies there also.

SWPAC/SOPAC

The North Carolina BB TF will bombard Tulagi one more turn and then it will withdraw to Australia to link up with the Allied carriers replenishing there. USN assault transports begin loading troops in the New Hebrides for the next SWPAC offensive to open up the Torres Straits.

Woodlark Island built up to a level 3 AF and I staged in 85 Hudson III(LR)s and B-25Cs there. Dave withdrew virtually all of his shipping from rabaul to Manus in the Admiralty Islands and up till now its been out of range of SOPAC bases in the Solomons. Next turn the 85 bombers staged into Woodlark will port attack Manus along with some long ranged B-24Ds and some LB-30s.

I am out of supply now at Clark and Im not able to draw any supplies into the hex. Im still able to draw supplies into Bataan and I still have nearly 25000 supplies in Manila and bases to the south so Ive developing a withdrawal plan. i cant pull all the Clark troops back to Manila as dave can then walk into Bataan after capturing Clark and with all the CD guns gone he can then naval bombard Manila.

So I will withdraw about 40% of the 1570 AV at Clark to Bataan and the rest will withdraw to Manila. With Japan having 9 divisions at Clark it doesnt look as if Dave is trying to starve me out..... I will probably now run out of troops before I run out of supplies. Manila is still generating 100 supplies /turn with its LI and has over 80,000 resources....so it can generate 3000 supplies/mo well into 1946. I am going to turn replacements back on now for the troops at manila to increase my AV and use up some of the excess supplies.

It seems very strange that supplies will flow into Bataan but not Clark. To get the amounts of supplies to those small empty bases south of Manila, you must have used the supply draw arrows, I presume that you have tried setting the supplies required down to 0 at those bases to see if the supplies will move north up to Clark again.

I have to say that I was very interested to see if you could hold the Philippines the entire game. Even with 9 Japanese divisions there, I still think that you could have held Clark had supplies flowed there properly, especially if you could have got a decent fighter force above Clark to allow rapid forts construction.
With all those troops in Luzon and Burma, there must be literally nothing but SNLFs, very low experience garrison units and naval guards in the rest of the Pacific.

yubari....good comments! I had 8000 supplies in Manila and set the supply draw to zero. Next door at Clark I set the supply draw to 31,000......no supplies were drawn into Clark. I might have been able to hold out indefinitely at Clark.....Dave had over 600 squads disabled in his attack this turn. And you are right about most of the map being guarded by small units. I had considered a relief operation to Luzon or maybe a big leap forward to western New Guinea to support an eventual relief op to Luzon but with CV Lexington still in the shipyard at Pearl repairing her torpedo damage......and with CV saratoga maintaining her position on the line with unrepaired torpedo damage.....I just dont have enough carriers to go head to head with KB let alone taking on KB and overwhelming Japanese land based air. I can easily overwhelm Dave's small land garrisons wherever I invade.....but besides lacking sufficient numbers of modern aircraft Im also lacking base forces so there is a limit to how fast I can expand.

At least Im going to re-open the Torres Strait in a week and then I can start building up Darwin and threaten the DEI.

Thats over 640 disabled/killed squads for Japan....the equivalent of losing 1 1/2 divisions in a single attack. Ive given orders for all my units at Clark to evacuate the hex. The Clark prepped LCUs will withdraw to bataan while the Manila prepped LCUs will withdraw to Manila. The defensive terrain at Manila is only 2x vs the 3x at Clark.......but I think that my unit prep for Manila will give me a prep advantage that will offset the terrain. The LCUs moving to Bataan move at a different rate than the LCUs moving to Manila so coodinating the withdrawal so that everyone exits Clark on the same turn will be difficult.

SWPAC

SWPAC commences its next offensive to re-open the Torres Strait and open a SLOC to Darwin. Assault transports begin loading the 1st US Corps at Luganville .......the 1st Marine Division and the USMC 1st Tank Battalion. Im having to scavenge BFs from rear area bases to keep the SOPAC/SWPAC offensives moving forward.

The US 1st Corps will be landed at Port Moresby......at 1 point Dave had 150 AV there and he can move a lot in or out with his armada of transport AC.

After taking Port Moresby......the 138th Regiment will land at GHorn Island.

Level 3 AFs are completed at Milne Bay and Portland Roads.

Once I developed AFs at Lunga and Russell Island......Dave was forced to pull virtually all of his shipping from Rabaul to Manus. Last turn I had som e 85 medium bombers and 2 squadrons of 4Es staged into Woodlark and Rossel Islands to ambush the IJN shiiping in port at Manus. The medium bombers didnt fly but the 4Es flew and sent a message that signicant CAP needs to be deployed over major ports:

SOPAC/SWPAC

Allied amphib transports continue to load troops, construction engineers and BFs for the upcoming landings at Port Moresby.

I had been naval bombarding Tulagi for several weeks with the BB North Carolina battlegoup to increase their experience and disable IJA troops on the island. The BBs were fortunately sent to Australia 2 turns ago to be ready to support the invasion at Port Moresby. Dave sent 3 subs to Tulagi to both mine the hex and intercept the Allied BBs and they got there a day too late:

Tassafaromga is expanded to a level 3 AF.

Allied troops continue their withdrawal from Clark to bataan and Manila.

Dave is content to bombard Clark from the air and on the ground.

CBI

Dave evacuated Warazup as the Imperial Guards Division is sent to reinforce the assault at Myitkina.

The 48th Gurkha Brigade is on the move to retake Warazup. I flew in the Chinese 96th Division with transport AC to reinforce Myitkina:

I imagine Dave will launch another big assault at Myitkina in the next turn or two. Dave pulled 7 armor LCUs out of Myitkina after they were roughed up by the Allied anti-tank guns....only 2 armor units remain.

We had both been sweeping each other with our fighters so there was no A2A combat over Burma for the last 3 turns. This turn I tried to rest my fighters at Kalemyo and Imphal ....put only 20% CAP...... and of course when Dave swept my ground troops several fighters drifted into the Japanese sweeps. Japan loses 45 AC this turn to 32 Allied AC. We see the first use in combat this turn of the new production KI-44-IIa Tojos. Individual plane losses include 21 Oscars, 14 A6M2s, 4 Tojos, 7 P-400s, 7 P-39Ds, 5 Hurricane IIbs, 2 Hurricane IIcs and 3 Kittyhawk Is.

Over in China Dave has adapted a new tactic. previously he ws using massed armor in his attacks. Now he is splitting up his armor into muliple attacks as the 2 Chinese AT regiments cant be everywhere at once. There is no answer for IJA armor without AT guns:

Ground combat at 86,58

Quiet in China as Dave rests his army at Wenchow. I wouldnt be surprised to see a shock attack next turn here.

In Burma......Dave launches a bloody shock attack at Myitkina:

Ground combat at Myitkyina (64,42)

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 51345 troops, 589 guns, 401 vehicles, Assault Value = 1793

In AE...there is absolutely nothing more fatal than losing a shock attack due to the negative effects on fatigue and morale. If the defensive terrain wasnt 3x at Myitkina I would seriously consider shock attacking back at the Japanese next turn. Dave had pulled 7 of his 9 armor regiments out of Myitkina following his 1st attack there. After this last shock attack....the remaining 2 IJA tank regiments have lost over half of their vehicles..... they have been absolutely devastated.

As it is......our 1800 AV road block on the Mandaly/Myitkina rail line/highway must be having an effect on the supply situation for the Japanese at Myitkina now.....I am getting reports of Topsy transport AC being shot up by flak and turned back at Myitkina. Dave has been sweeping my outlying units picking off my drifting CAP. Next turn Im going to make a CAP trap at Myitkina to stop the transport AC.

PHILIPPINES

Dave orders another 1:2 assault at Clark:

Ground combat at Clark Field (79,76)

Japan has now had over 1000 squads disabled/killed in the last 2 turns.....nearly 2 1/2 divisions!

My troops at Clark should exit the hex next turn with the majority withdrawing to Manila. They will meet some 950 AV of fresh 100% prepped troops already dug in at Manila. In fact....my total combined forces at bataan and Manila next turn should be almost equal to the size of the Japanese force on Luzon.

And then Dave will need to make a decision.....whether to first go after Bataan or Manila.

SOPAC/SWPAC

After 4 months of being pinned down on the beach......the US Army 108th and 182nd Regiments finally capture the base on Tulagi:

Tulagi gives SOPAC another level 1 AF and a level 3 port.

Invasion forces, air combat TFs and surface TFs all depart their ports in Australia and the New Hebrides and sail to thei rendezvous point for the Port Moresby invasion just E of Cairns.

Woodlark Island enlarges to a level 4 AF while Rekata bay completes a level 2 AF. Vella Lavella will complete a level 1 fighter strip next turn. Rennel Is. enlarges to a level 6 AF.

CVE Copahee arrives at Noumea with 3 New Mexico class BBs and BB Arizona. BB Arizona is the first of the 4 surviving BBs of the 12/7/41 sneak attack to complete repairs and make it out to the combat zone. All 4 BBs have had the latest and greatest AA and radar upgrades. CVE Copahee with her squadron of 28 F4F-4s will take her place on the line to allow CV Saratoga to go back to Pearl and repair her torpedo damage.
