General tips for a beginner?

Hannibal: Rome and Carthage in the Second Punic War is a new and innovative turn-based strategy game that puts you in command of the Carthaginian military during a period of total war over land and sea with the young Roman Republic. With this military juggernaut of the ancient world at your disposal, you will vie for control over Italy, Carthage, Spain and the Mediterranean Sea using a combination of strategic political maneuvering and sheer tactical skill both on land and sea. Play consists of two layers; the first is a strategic layer where you must prudently steer your forces to the destruction of Rome’s army and the ultimate destruction of the Republic and city itself. At your disposal are a variety of unit types and historical commanders from which to form your armies. On the tactical scale, when meeting the enemy in battle, skilled leadership and a knack for war come into play as you use a simple but engaging battle system to best your opponents.

General tips for a beginner?

....Besides playing on Easy difficulty, of course (this game's AI has garnered quite the reputation)! [:'(]

I just picked this up a couple days back, and am looking forward to giving this a go. I can't wait!

Be agressive with Hannibal's army; he can't sit on the defensive. Get him to Italy ASAP.

Send another general with Hannibal. If you want or need to take a city, use that general to seige wile Hannibal protects him. Hannibal is fine for storming cities, but is wasted on seiges.

Interfere with Roman recruiting as much as possible by using Hannibals army to occupy Rome's best recruiting grounds.

Hold Spain. Don't completly denude Spain of troops to reinforce Hannibal. It's a balancing act. If you lose Spain, Rome is almost guaranteed a win on VPs.

Ration your "Punic Tricks" cards. If Hannibal is engaging a smaller army comanded by a poor general, you might not need one. Save them for the big battles.

Also see this thread:

Also, try Normal difficulty. Easy is too Easy, IMHO. Normal will force you to learn to outthink the AI.
