ARD how do you move those things!

Post by flyboy999 »

Hi All and Merry Christmas

I just received my first ARD and I tried to move it from Seattle to Adak Island. By the time it reached Victoria BC (3 hexes away??) it was already damaged.

I repaired the unit in Victoria and returned it to Seattle, it got damaged again! SYS: 3 FLT: 6 ENG:3. How can you move those things on a long voyage without them falling apart?

Thank You,

I normally move them in convoy, with a small ASW escort, and a long-range xAK to refuel the ARD. Also when you first form the TF, make sure you top the fuel from from the port.

yep.. I transverse large ranges.. like Seattle to Rahbal with ard in convoy set to normal speed.. not fast or cruise but mission speed...
anyway they are slow but arrive in one piece always

The ARDs don't have much fuel capacity, so they need to sail with something that can refuel them every hex or two.  If a TF runs out of fuel, you start accumulating damage fairly quickly.

I've also discovered that, while they will 'refuel at sea' automatically, if they happen to be passing through a base (or dot base) hex they will not do and will just stay in that hex until you manually press the 'refuel at sea' button.

The paradigm is they were built in sections and the individual sections were towed to somewhere for assembly.

I do remember some evil grins by Don and John about these during the development process. Their speed and endurance is a function of what the tugs that pulled them could actually do. The necessity of a refueling ship is historical and thus necessary. Modeling this aspect of this game-warship class seems reasonable. There are some things happening in the executable file that were done by Don and John regarding these things; and the Ship Data reflects those things: Synergy.

My thought is they know wtfo, and what they did, works. Others, of course, can do what they wish.

I got a two line parted message when towing mine and the dock took some damage. Set them on cruise and let them take there time. I have moved them all over the map with little trouble. Very valuable device. One shows up in Portland that cannot be moved due to the size of the river hex I suppose.

That was fixed in a patch a while back. Shouldn't be an issue any more.

Tankers don't refuel from their fuel cargo while underway, only from their own fuel tanks. Putting one or two xAKs with it should suffice. Just keep an eye on them to make sure they have enough fuel.
