A Southwestern Rumble Andav (J) v witpqs (A) Closed to witpqs

Post by Andav »

Howdy Folks,

This will be the companion AAR to witpqs' Rumble in the Southwest.

We are playing DaBabes mod with the extended maps and reduced cargo spaces. We will be upgrading to the latest beta version as soon as I can remember to do it. We are currently using r2 I think. We have some house rules which I think witpqs posted. There is really nothing exotic there. We are both going to play a reasonable game and figure out anything which looks funky as we go. I am currently playing a 2x2 as the Japanese against witpqs and aprezto so I am familiar with some of his tricks and our play styles are very compatible.

Anyway, at this point we are to 12-Dec-41 and things look to be heating up. I will do a brief summary of the events leading up to this point in a little while. For now, I just needed a place holder and something to get me started on the AAR. I am not a post the combat report kinda guy. I will post some when it is appropriate but mostly I will use screen shots and descriptions of what is happening.

For now this space is open to witpqs. Please treat him harshly if he should post. [:D]

Hey there,

Giving you a welcome back. Good luck and have fun. Since we are both playing WITPQS, I'll be watching this AAR closely. I do know from playing George before that he loves to stack up multiple troops in best terrain. We'll see how stacking limits affect his strategy. I've been fortressed Manilla, Singapore AND Palembang by him. Don't make my mistake and spread your troops too thin. George is good at stopping that cold. Have fun and we'll converse over strategies. :)

You two guys are DOOMED! That's all there is to it! [:D]

It's only December 12th, 1941 and already the Devious Admiral Wa (aka DAW in my AAR) has lost, well, well, he's lost a few ships! And airplanes too. And more stuff like that is coming!

Make him tell you about his tricksy, nasty, stinky use of surface forces in the Sulu Sea and all those other places.

I'm running back to my AAR where it's safe! [:'(]

I will. I like tricksy things in others pockets, but I'd rather bomb ships in port. That surface thing, too variable for me.

Well ... For tricksy nasty SCTF, just this turn the haul was:

Night Time Surface Combat, near Muntok at 50,90, Range 9,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
DD Hatsuyuki
DD Murakumo
DD Asagiri
DD Yugiri

Allied Ships
TK British Judge, Shell hits 15, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk

Night Time Surface Combat, near Palembang at 49,90, Range 9,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
DD Hatsuyuki
DD Murakumo
DD Asagiri
DD Yugiri

Allied Ships
TK Anastasia, Shell hits 41, and is sunk

Night Time Surface Combat, near Palembang at 48,91, Range 9,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
DD Hatsuyuki
DD Murakumo
DD Asagiri
DD Yugiri

Allied Ships
TK Francol, Shell hits 37, and is sunk

Unfortunately, I paid the piper ...

TF 334 encounters mine field at Palembang (48,91)

Japanese Ships
DD Yugiri, Mine hits 1, heavy damage
DD Asagiri, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

But they still keep going!
Night Time Surface Combat, near Palembang at 48,91, Range 9,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
DD Hatsuyuki
DD Murakumo

Allied Ships
TK Basilea, Shell hits 35, heavy fires, heavy damage

And finally, out of ammo they have to pass on another one

Day Time Surface Combat, near Palembang at 49,90, Range 19,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
DD Hatsuyuki
DD Murakumo

Allied Ships
TK Britannia

And then a CL showed up and we were lucky to escape

Day Time Surface Combat, near Muntok at 50,89, Range 23,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
DD Hatsuyuki, Shell hits 2, on fire
DD Murakumo, Shell hits 1, on fire

Allied Ships
CL Mauritius
DD Vendetta, Shell hits 4, heavy fires
DM Stronghold
DD Jupiter

This was just the group around Palembang.

Ok to give WITPQS his due ...

Day Time Surface Combat, near Puerto Princesa at 72,85, Range 16,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
APD Hagi, Shell hits 1, on fire
TB Hayabusa, Shell hits 1
xAK Atago Maru, Shell hits 2
xAK Meiyo Maru, Shell hits 1
xAK Santos Maru, Shell hits 5, heavy fires, heavy damage
xAK Zyuyo Maru
xAKL Hidaka Maru, Shell hits 2
xAKL Raizan Maru, Shell hits 6, heavy fires, heavy damage

Allied Ships
DD Scout, Shell hits 2
DD Thanet, Shell hits 1

Japanese ground losses:
514 casualties reported
Squads: 3 destroyed, 6 disabled
Non Combat: 16 destroyed, 22 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 2 disabled

Now that was probably my quota of combat reports for awhile.

Time to catch up to this game. The current date is 13-Dec-42. While not a big historical accuracy kinda guy, I tend to wax historical about the open of a new CG. Attacking Pearl Harbor just feels right to me so that is what I do. Other than that, I change many things. We have a rule about port attacks being near each other in time, so with the PH attack, I will not hit any other ports. I will try to plaster Clark field and various bases in Malaysia.

Strategically, Fortress Palembang scares the crap out of me so that makes Malaysia and Singapore my primary targets early. Java will come next with the PI falling when it falls. In SoPac, with the reduced loads we will have to see how far we can go. Typically, I like to extend into New Caledonia, Suva, Pago, etc. I am not sure how possible this will be with the reduced loads. I will need to measure every drop of fuel I spend cruising around the extreme parts of the soon to be Empire.
So onto the details!

7-Dec-42

The Pearl Harbor attack was two extremes. It started with 2 Midget subs scoring hits on BBs. I set all Kates to Port Attack and all Vals to airfield hoping to disable the airfield and destroy a lot of planes on the ground. In the end, there were extra sake rations for the Kates pilots while the Val pilots were left with cold porridge.

The final tally was:

BB Maryland, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk
BB California, Torpedo hits 6, and is sunk
BB Oklahoma, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage (tracker says this sunk a few days later)
BB West Virginia, Torpedo hits 5, and is sunk
BB Pennsylvania, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk (Magazine explodes on BB Pennsylvania)
BB Arizona, Torpedo hits 5, and is sunk
BB Nevada, Bomb hits 1, Torpedo hits 5, on fire, heavy damage
BB Tennessee, Bomb hits 2, Torpedo hits 5, on fire, heavy damage
CA New Orleans, Torpedo hits 2, heavy damage
CL Honolulu, Torpedo hits 2, heavy damage
CL Raleigh, Torpedo hits 4, and is sunk
CL Helena, Torpedo hits 2, on fire (Massive explosion on CL Helena)
CL Detroit, Torpedo hits 1, on fire

Damage to the fleet was very heavy. There were only 77 runway hits which was very disappointing. Only 24 planes were destroyed on the ground. Many were damaged but they can be repaired.

The rest of the day was fairly routine.

South East Pac

I redirected the Tarawa landing to Wake but held both TFs back so they would not get squished by roving Allied CVs. Mili invasion went on as usual. Picket ships were sent out to look for those roving CVs and subs were generally repositioned.
So Pac

Some small invasions were setup out of Truk. With the Aussie and US CLs around this area, I will wait for support before getting too frisky.

Celebes Sea/ Baboblob (I can ever remember how to spell this so it is Baboblob to me) area

Davo landing was redirected to the base just to the south. We will march from there to Davo. Legaspi landing was allowed to go. Landings at Hollandia and Wewak were sent along with a couple of other small ones. The CVEs at Baboblob were sent to cover the Davo force and hopefully catch any fleeing shipping and maybe a CL or CA if we are lucky.

Formosa area

Generally, these units will load up and head to the PI and some other locations near there. This is one place where you really start to notice the reduced loads. Normally, you can load pretty much everything you want. No so now.

SCTFs were set to interdict fleeing shipping and guard against PT boats.

Most bombers were set to hit Clark. I plan to keep up the bombing of Clark, Manila and Batan to slow fort building. Once the Allied PI air force is eliminated and airfields are established at Aparri and Laoag, the army bombers will take over this task.

Malaysia Area

Landing were set for Kota Bharu and such. Stuff was loaded at the various bases in this area. Again, the reduced cargo spaces were noticed. Imperial Guard ad company were sent by train to Singora. Bombers were set to bomb and such. I will try to land some of the infantry out of Samah at Mersing if given the opportunity to try to cut off the rush to Singapore. If not they will go to Kuantan. Securing airfields in range of Singapore to begin the bombing campaign is a high priority.

Landings on the north side of Borneo were scheduled. Jolo and Manado will be scheduled for early invasion depending on USN activity and available covering forces.

Home Islands

33rd Division will be sent to Malaysia. Unfortunately, shipping will have to be gathered.

4th Division will go to SoPac ad generally cause problems. I debated on sending it somewhere else but I need to get some troopers into SoPac sooner rather than later. Again, shipping needs to be gathered. Mix Guards will be purchased and sent to SoPac as well.

The regiments in Sendai will be sent to Malaysia once shipping is gathered … again …

Cities were inspected and supply requests bumped up where needed.

China

This will be sorted out and will probably not be talked about a lot. It is War in the Pacific not Land War in China.

Manchukuo area

I shifted engineering units around to help build ports in Korea (Fusan and Port Arthur). Units which I plan to buy out were sent to ports to sit and wait. The local bars are pretty happy about this.

Production

I am hoping to do a much better job with this then in my previous games. Many things were adjusted but things still need to be set. Mainly we are waiting on supply levels to increase.

8-Dec-41 – 11-Dec-41

I hung around for a second strike at PH. This was probably not the best idea since the airfield was not damaged. There was a strong CAP and the strike was not very effective. We managed a couple of bomb hits on Oklahoma and Tennessee and a few planes shot down in exchange for 18 KB pilots. I do not think it was worth the exchange. Initial Cap over PH was 108 planes with 65 of them P-40Bs.

Pretty much everything else has gone well. Z-Force has not been seen. USN cruisers have not been sighted. On the 9th, CL Adelaide showed up and trashed my Kavieng landing force.

I have been especially pleased with the number of TKs I have killed early. While not game changing, they will not be hauling fuel out of my future empire.

13-Dec-41

The Allied navy finally showed itself today. Usually finding Z-Force is a pretty traumatic thing for the Japanese. We seriously dodged a bullet today. We will have to see if we can escape. Hopefully linking up with the IJN BBs will provide enough cover. Kates are set to strike with torpedoes this turn. Hopefully they will not choose some really scary AKL and all fly to sink it.

14-Dec-41

The much anticipated/worried about clash in the Celebes Sea did not happen. The CVE managed to dodge all but one beat up DD TF which was evaded without combat.

There were several clashes beyond the typical AKL bashing. The first was the “IJN BBsx4” running into a Allied CL TF. Pleasantries were exchanged but I had hoped for better results.

Night Time Surface Combat, near Jolo at 73,91, Range 10,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
BB Nagato
BB Fuso
BB Ise
BB Hyuga
DD Wakatake
DD Kuretake
DD Sanae

Allied Ships
CL Java, Shell hits 2
CL De Ruyter, Shell hits 1
CL Tromp, Shell hits 1
DD Piet Hein
DD Kortenaer
DD Evertsen
DD Witte de With
DD Van Nes
DD Banckert
DD Van Ghent

The Allies then stomped CL Kashima and friends.

Day Time Surface Combat, near Feni Islands at 110,126, Range 21,000 Yards

Japanese aircraft
no flights

Japanese aircraft losses
E7K2 Alf: 1 destroyed

Japanese Ships
CL Kashima, Shell hits 27, and is sunk
PB Keijo Maru, Shell hits 18, and is sunk
PB Koei Maru, Shell hits 1, and is sunk
xAKL Katsuragisan Maru, Shell hits 5, and is sunk

Allied Ships
CA Canberra, Shell hits 3
CL Perth

During the day, only one flight of Kates attacked a scary AKL. They sunk the danger with 3 torpedoes.

In all we managed to put torpedoes in CL Marblehead (x2) and CA Houston (x1). CL Boise dodged several. Curse that CL! Z-Force was not attacked and I am not exactly sure where they are now. In the screen shot below, I think all the CAs might be Z-Force and friends plus the USN cruisers.

I will get to other areas in another post.

14-Dec-41 cont.

In Malaysia, Allied air visited the Mersing landing site in force. Our weak LRCP of Oscars was not enough to prevent significant damage. The base fell and aviation support is on the ground so local CAP will be in place tomorrow. We are seeing mines at Mersing as well. Units will march to cut the rail line. Hopefully some units will be trapped outside of Singapore. So far so good I think.

This is the situation in Malaysia.

14-Dec-41 cont.

In the PI, our forces continue to march and take bases. The Allies have pretty much bugged out and left the northern part of the island to us. A blockade will hopefully keep supplies out. The allied air force continues to offer resistance. We continue to shoot them down.

14-Dec-41 cont.

Elsewhere, Wake fell to a shock attack. We shock attacked at Kuching but were repulsed. The most distressing thing was our landing at Singkawang. The battalion land completely disrupted. I am not sure why because it was prepped and coastal defense was not massive. In the end we saw “Japanese Unit(s) Wiped Out at Singkawang by attrition!!!” Bummer … We kinda needed this base early and will have to deal with it post haste. We have support troops heading that way already.

KB – So where in the world is KB? It is currently passing south of Wake making sure Allied CVs do not hamper that landing. They will go to Truk to replenish and support actions in SoPac.

Here are the current ships sunk and aircraft for the day.

15-Dec-41

Celebes Sea area

And then they were gone … Just like that, the Allied forces fade away. The crippled CA Houston and her DD escort were run over by the IJN BB TF and dispatched. We also attacked ARD YFD-1 Dewey hitting it with 4 torpedoes.

ARD YFD-1 Dewey, Torpedo hits 4, on fire, heavy damage

I guess this is enough to sink the thing. I am dispatching a SCTF to see if it is still around.

China

Hong Kong fell today. And there was much rejoicing. 38th Division will go to help at Singapore.

PI

We march on toward Clark and Manila.

KB

Is still headed to Truk for fuel, planes and pilots.

Malaysia

We continue to march pushing the units which were at Kota Bharu south. We march west and southwest of Mersing.

Yep, Sinkawang sucks. Depends I guess on how long the troops were loaded on ships, if they had supplies, etc. (I always spell these bizarre names wrong...god dern furniers). I'm doing same thing, so I hope same thing doesn't happen. Joha Bharu (another probable spelling error) is a level 4 and can support Palembang in a pinch. Definately land there ASAP. George will build that thing up to ungodly proportions.

I am not really sure what happened at Sinkawang. Maybe some really really really bad rolls or something. They had supply and support. I am not sure what happened.

Joha Bharu is the town north of Singapore right? We hope to be there in 2 days. Landing at Mersing makes this possible.

16-Dec-41

Celebes Sea area

Another day without contact with the Allied fleet. I think the seas are ours. The mini KB will link up and head to Baboblob to replenish. Jolo was invaded.

China

The cat herding continues in China.

PI

We march on toward Clark and Manila. Still …

KB

Is still headed to Truk for fuel, planes and pilots. Still …

Malaysia

We continue to march pushing the units which were at Kota Bharu south. We march west and southwest of Mersing.

Yeah, one of mine whiffed on Saratoga in my suspended game and it kind of blows. I just about spilled coffee down my leg (it was early) when a CV popped up with the soft sound of torpedoes splashing into the water.

For China, what are your plans of conquest? Or do you just want to herd and then shut it down in a good defensive position?

Hi obvert,

I really don't like China. I will clean up the south (Chuhsein and Wenchow) and try to make some advances in the north. I know it is probably letting witqps off the hook a bit but with the land model the way it is, I will do what I have to do and then hold.

17-Dec-41

Burma area

He bombed my HI at Bangkok. Shame on me for not having CAP there. Maybe I will bomb some LI in China …

Celebes Sea area

I-159 found and sunk CL Caledon near Balipakin. The CL Naka TF found the ARD and sent it to the bottom. Nells spotted CL Mauritius near Gorontalo (near Manado) heading east. I will try to intercept with a CA lead SCTF new to the area.

China

The cat herding continues in China.

PI

We march on toward Clark and Manila. Still …

KB

Is still headed to Truk for fuel, planes and pilots. Still …

Malaysia

We continue to march pushing the units which were at Kota Bharu south. We retreated 2 units and destroyed an HQ unit. Kuantan was liberated by a base force. We now have a lvl 4 airfield in range of Singapore. I have moved fighters to start sweeping. Unfortunately, they need a rest first. I have been driving them pretty hard since the war began. 55th Regiment is now at Kluong. The bombardment from the previous day showed some Aussie units. We will ground attack with planes and shock attack hoping to dislodge them and cut the rail line for good. We continue march southwest of Mersing toward Johore Bhura. This is the next critical base because of the airfield. It currently only has one unit which has return some interesting sizes. Everything from 520 men to 1920. I don’t think it is moving units because there is not direction indicator. I have a decent recon unit flying there tomorrow.

Near Malaysia, CL Kashii sank some HDMLs or some torpedo boat type things and then ate a torpedo from a Vildebeest. She will limp to Saigon for repairs. I have kinda brutalized my old slow CLs. I lost one on SoPac to Adelaide and now this one eats a fish.
