Maintenance, Money and Resource

Post by colonyan »

Very short question.
Does maintenance uses raw resource or it uses only the money?
Just wanted to confirm this.
I've read that maintenance cost vary with the cost of the resource.
**
In case resource was not used, it could be interesting if maintenance required
few raw resource to maintain. Or even new maintenance purpose resource/component
for each branch of component types.

Given that resource are infinite, resources being required only at construction
seems to be undermining the use or raw materials.

Due to hardware limitation, could be difficult and also true value added to game is questionable yet... just a wild thought.

Wouldn't it be interesting if the maintenance was somewhat more realistic?

It would be a little bit like fuel costs :
- Each component wouldn't have just a intact/destroyed state, but rather like in Space Empires 5, a health %.
- When under a certain % (which could be 0), (active) components wouldn't work anymore (IIRC it's 50% for active components in SE5). Or component efficiency could depend on their health, not necessarily in a linear fashion.
- Each component would slowly degrade over time (not necessarily at the same rate, could also depend on whether the component is being used or not). Repairing components would obviously consume resources. Resources would be either scaled 100 times, or they would have two decimal points.
- Repair bots would consume resources too. You could (auto) order ships to carry a small amount of resources (proportional to their component degradation rate). There would be a tiny cargo bay component to store these resources (or repair bots would have that cargo capacity themselves).

I was under the impression (probably from watching Larry or Das play) that the annual maintenance cost of a ship or station was calculated from the current price of the resources required to build the components that make up said ship or station.

And that yearly maintenance cost is about 30-40% of a ship's/base's construction cost.

I've also noted that the actual maintenance cost is about 20% lower than the displayed cost in design screens for Constructor ships and Explorers. It's the same for a Small Space Port.
