Global Domination, 1938

Post by ernieschwitz »

Hi,

I cobbled together a scenario that i like to call global domination 1938. Its features a new world map, and doesn´t use the old GD map. It portrays the situation as it was in 1938 on january 10th approximately. OOBs are ficitional, but seem reasonable. They are based on countries production more than anything else.

Major Powers are:

Germany
Italy
Japan
Soviet Union
France
Great Britain
United States
China

All regimes start at peace, except for China and Japan who are at war.

It uses the diplomacy options (originally introduced by tweber) to take over minor countries. Major country diplomacy is also possible.

Regimes start out with different levels of technology, but are evenly matched (well, if you don´t count china).

It is probably not balanced yet in technology costs, but i thought i had better load it up to the scenario bank now, before ATG comes out.

I hope you will download and enjoy playing the game.

I forgot to mention it uses a modified bombur mod v3. It is neccesary to download this before playing the game.

Also i have made a few flags and such, in the process, which are included in the download package for GD1938.

Bringing back to life an old thread...

I´ve been working very hard on making the GD1938 scenario playable for ATG. I think i have done it.
Uploaded to the scenario bank is now GD 1938 alpha, version 0.35.

It is a combination of Global Domination, WaW for ATG and stuff from Europe 1933...

I better flesh out some details:

First of all, the playable sides.

Germany. An event has been made so that nobody can declare war on Germany, before they have attacked another country. They have assigned a number of countries they can take over by action card, and quite alot they can take over by the research: coup. For instance, they can take over Austria by action card immediately, and take over say, El Salvador, by coup.

Italy. An event has been made, like the one covering Germany, to prevent players from declaring war on Italy before Italy declares war on another country. Just like Germany, they can take over a few countries by action card, and a few others by coup. These are not the same countries as Germany can take over. Tho some are.

Japan. Starts at war with China. Cannot be attacked by any player, before they have declare war on a non-asian country. The Soviet Union is counted as an Asian country in this respect, turkey is not. In other words, Japan can fight quite a few wars before being involved in world war. Just like Italy and Germay, they can play action cards to take over countries.... as i remember it they can take over 2. Mongolia and Thailand.

The Soviet Union. Starts the game with an event preventing anyone except the axis powers from declaring war on it. However once they declare war on another country any country (including the west) can declare war on them. The Soviet Union can take over Mongolia by action card, and perform a number of coups in countries.

France. Has quite a few diplomatic options for coups in central and eastern europe that Great Britain does not. Has quite a few cards it can play too, to take over countries. There is NO protection from attacks from anybody... Quite the contrary. France, because it is a western civilized country, cannot declare war on minor countries, as it needs a reason to go to war.

Great Britain. Has a wide variety of options to take over countries by action card. Also has quite a few options to take over countries by coups. Just like France it cannot declare war on minor countries. They need a reason to go to war.

United States. Has only one country it can take over by action card, Cuba. It does however have the full range of latin and south american coups it can play. The United States can declare war on any of these latin and south american countries, to protect its own interests in this area. However, before the United States can declare war on another country outside this area, it needs to overcome it´s policy of isolationism. To do this it has to play an action card. This card will give a cumulative 1% chance that United States can declare war on any country that Great Britain or France would be able to declare war on. Also this chance is modified by how many South American and stategic countries it has taken over.

China. Can take over 1 country by action card: Mongolia. It has no coup options. Generally China has big troubles, as they are at war with Japan. They do however have two things going for them. They can buy militia very cheaply, and they have alot of supplies, compared to their needs.

Research:

Research can be split up into 3 different types. Strategic, Diplomatic and Tactical.

Lets start out with tactical research.

Each country generates automatically an amount of research points. These are determined by what location types you own. A major capitol will give you 100 research points, a capitol 50 research points and a research center 25 research points.

Some quick examples.

Japan owns 2 capitols. Beijing and Tokyo. Both these count as 50 research points. So each turn the japanese generate 100 research points.

The United States owns 1 major capitol (Washington DC) and 2 research centers (Boston and Los Alamos) That is 100 for the major capitol, 25 for each research center, bringing it to a total of 150 research each turn.

China owns no major capitol, capitol or research center, and gets therefore 0 research points each turn.

Each country is able to build research centers. They cost 200 EPs and 500 PPs. So it is quite expensive, but those are the same prices as in WaW for ATG...

Tactical research requires certain amounts of research points to develope. Most basic stuff, costs 700 Research points, and upwards, when it gets more advanced. Some costs 500. Each country starts out with different tactical research levels...

Diplomatic research, are the coups. A coup functions like this. It costs about half of what a take over of the same country would cost if taken over by action card, but there are risks. There is a 25% chance of success, and the country will be yours after the ending of your turn. There is also a 10% chance of failure, and the country will befall one of your enemies. (Predetermined which). Some countries can only be taken over by coups. Switzerland is a good example of this. Only Germany and Italy can take it over, and only by coup. However, if the coup fails horribly, then France takes over Switzerland.

Strategic research are the ones that give bonuses over a longer periode of time.

Here are a few of them: Radar (better recon), Espionage (chances to get full recon of enemy countries), Better training (your troops get a max of 25 free xp, instead of the usual 10, without fighting). Occupation tech (You get 80% production from conquered countries, instead of 50%), Coalition (Foreign troops fight for you at 100% efficiency, instead of 80% efficiency). ...

The more interesting ones are perhaps the own people production researches. These allow your population to produce at better levels. They are 80%, 100%, 125% and 150% researches. Each country starts out with a different level of these researches already researched. So some countries already produce at high efficiency, while others don´t.

Germany, Great Britain and United States start out with 100% own people production. Italy, Soviet Union and France start out with 80% own people production research, and China starts out with 50% own people research. (they haven´t learned nay people production researches).

Strategic Research and Diplomatic researches both use ordinary PPs.

Factories are always of the building engineers people type. And the amount of PPs that is used on production researches is variable. The more production you have, the more it costs. Chemical Factories and Research centers are the exception. They have factory people type, and are not increased in efficiency by any research.

Production and resource types.

Just like in WaW for ATG, each time a unit of supplies is produced a unit of fuel is produced. Resource sites: Major Oil, Minor Oil, Major Coal, Minor Coal, all produce supplies. Cities can produce supplies but they are expensive. And just like in WaW for ATG it is possible to keep only half your fuel for the next turn. (or 3/4s if you play the Fuel Rationing card). Just like in WaW for ATG each unit that requires fuel, does not use any fuel on the defensive. So if you keep only 5 fuel at the end of your turn, the fighters you have on intercept will still intercept at normal ranges and such.

There are apart from fuel and supplies other resource types as well.

These are Steel, Engines, Hulls, Pilots, Specialists and Man Power. You can produce Steel, Engines, Pilots, Specialists and Hulls, in any and all cities you own. However, Man Power is only increased each turn by a certain number for each country. Some already have a large man power reserve, some don´t. Be aware that this might be a major problem for you if you don´t take care.

There are no precursors in the game... (I don´t like to wait that long for items to be produced, so i decided to cut it down to the one turn wait).

Wow.....I have to give this one a try. I'm guesing it's not AI capable due to the action cards.
History began July 4th, 1776. Anything before that was a mistake.

Uploaded version 038.

Its still an alpha. But some playtesting made me realize that some changes had to be done. So the allowed attack stacks are now bigger, the artillery battlestack is bigger, air battlestacks are bigger. Night fighters and Night bombers now not really able to be damaged by day fighters. Artillery is cheaper, and all kinds are now purchasable even after better have been researched... Manpower increased for each country, and manpower increases increased as well... and a bunch of other minor changes.

I uploaded an atzip over the original 0.36 version. It should be there, you just have to search some i think, since the scenario doesn´t jump up to the top after a revision...

When I upgrade a scenario it always goes to top. Are you sure there wasn´t any trouble with upload?

Bombur was right: There was a problem with the upload. The file was too big and i didn´t notice.

Still i think this brings to the forefront a few bugs i found out while doing this. First of all, the revision number changes even when you don´t get to upload your file, because it´s too big. Second of all, the file was too big because for some reason it still packaged realist mod files.

I removed those files manually, and the ATZip file has now been uploaded. It was about 5.5 Mb smaller, without the realist mod files (that everybody gets with ATG).

Developement on this Mod has been slow until recently.

For one thing there was a test game going, which i had not been told of the results of. (I really would like to know how it is going/went and get some feedback). Also Bombur and I have decided that armour plays to little a role in the mod as is, and we are running a test game of a modified version (0.40) where tanks are better and entrenchment values for infantry lower. Hopefully this will solve a few things.

Ernie and me joined forces to improve our existing scenarios and creating others. I find his 1938 scenario excellent, and it really deserves more playtesting and improvements. We are currently playtesting v0.40 and I´m personally happy with the changes we made. Bombers are really effective against ground units and fortified infantry is no more invincible. We really would like to hear some feedback from other players on this scenario. Meanwhile, we are working with Bombur mod II, a random game masterfile featuring 7 peoples and custom units. Peoples will be American, British, German, Italians, Japanese, Russian/Soviet, French. We will have lots of units from 1930 to 1950. There will be also lots of what is if units. The third project we are working is an upgrade of Global Domination. I found the scenario is playable against the AI, but there is a lot of room for improvement.

Well, I'm currently playing the axis power. Germany isn't going too well (at war with every one) but I'll attribute that to my lack of planning (and not knowing that I couldn't be attacked till I attacked). Italy is so far behind tech and production wise if things go south for Germans I think they will just hold up and hope for WW III. Japan is starting to become overwhelmed, but I'm putting all of my resources into it and ignoring the west. Japan and Germany can probably hold 6 to 10 more turns.

any change of getting a copy of the new gd1938 0.40 and bombur mod 2.  It would be nice to see things like helicopter transports ( like trucks with recon and no move penalties), air helicopters, and AT missiles.

just some thoughts.

Bombur mod 2 is a work in progress, but I could send you what I did up to now. You should ask ernie for GD1938 040, as he is the main designer. I will send you the Bombur mod files as soon I´m back to home.
For now, I intend to use only 1930-50 equipment in Bombur mod. We could add some post 1960 stuff to GD 1938.

A trouble I see with GD1938 is that France and UK are too powerful because they can produce whatever stuff they want in the colonies, maybe we could fix this. On our game, I think you did tWo mistakes.
1-You attacked Poland without reaching an agreement with USSR
2-You didn´t attacked with Italy. Italy controls Spain, and it would have put a formidable challenge to France. Even figthing in two fronts, you were able to hold against France, UK and USSR.
