sveint (Axis) vs Oleg (Soviet) - Axis PoV

Post by sveint »

(No Oleg allowed)

I was going to look for another game as the Soviets, but Oleg wanted that side. Since I don't really have a preference I'll have another go as the aggressors. I expect very tough resistance against Oleg, so for this game I will take more time than I usually do.

Turn 1, 6/22/1941

For once I am going to plan out turn 1 in detail and change my objectives somewhat compared to what I've done before. I'll give slightly more emphasis to the drive on Leningrad, but the two main objectives will be Tula and Rostov. Why these two cities? Hopefully not too obvious (at least the former), and if I could hold those two through winter I would be well situated for 1942. Of course no plan survives contact with the enemy.

My first week will be new (for me). For the first time I will send units from AGC to AGS. I want to destroy or encircle as many strong enemy unit as possible. Weaker units I don't care about and will rout instead of encircle many of them.

Below is a sample pre-war intelligence map (let's face it, the location of Soviet units are well known by now):

Air offensive

For the first time I manually launch air raids. I try to conserve Stuka strength, and I refuse to bomb airfields that are outside fighter range. Also, quite a few stukas and some fighters are reserved for ground support. Still, our fighter losses are quite steep. I consider this a pyrrhic victory: we lose good aircraft and the Soviets get to scrap obsolete aircraft.

AGN

AGN faces weak resistance and we try simply go for as much territory as possible. Panzer units see as little combat as possible.

AGC

AGC is rather weak since we've sent so many units south. Still, we reach Minsk and make the planned pockets.

AGS

AGS successfully eliminates the targeted strong enemy units. A pocket isn't fully closed near the Pripet marshes but we capture so many units in our nets that it should be worth it.

Your pockets are leaky. are you sure that those pockets are going to hold?

I think the Lvov pocket should hold. The others may not, but they should all be easily and solidly be pocketed again on turn 2.

Turn 2, 6/26/1941

Well I was wrong, the Lvov pocket and several other do not hold. However, it seems that to open the pockets some strong Soviet elements were sent west. We gladly bypass them and continue east.

AGN

Clearing as much territory as possible. Panzer units get air supply.

AGC

It feels strange to have so few panzer units in the center. But so far so good. Soviets are creating a line on the river.

AGS, Proskurov

We bag three more strong units (almost a 4th). Overall I'm happy with the results, just about all the strong starting units are now dealt with. There is little to the east, for now. All panzer units are close to full strength and have seen little combat.

AGS

Defenses are relatively weak now. Unfortunately the panzers do all the heavy lifting this week and suffer some casaulties.

Something I do differently now and which seems to help is that I try to limit my hasty attacks.

I also keep the panzers out of combat unless it makes sense for them to attack.
