Need Help with my Subs

Post by paulkenny »

Ok, into November 42 and having absolutely NO luck, cant even find my opponents ships. its been months since they have even seen an escort. Pretty sure I am around bases where I know he has ships.

my subs have good leaders high naval and high inspiration.

What am I doing wrong?

Are you setting them to patrol an area, or are they just sitting there?

Does your opponent have Naval Search/ASW active? Are your subs being spotted? A spotted sub is not very effective.
I think that the two obligations you have are to be good at what you do and then to pass on your knowledge to a younger person

In my little experience, things tend to get better since you get the first solid radar updates to your sub fleet...at least for what concern your offensive detection capabilities...then there's the dud torp thing that will hunt you down well into 1943... but things get better eventually[:)]

Are you japanese? Allied? There are shipping lanes you gotta find them - San Francisco to Pearl, or Tokyo to Palembang/Truk are just some of them.

If you are allied, Nov '42 is way to early to think in terms of results.

im japanese and have em on 1 hex react.

using colombo as an example I have several subs parked outside the port, (for months on end) I am regularly reconning the base and every once in a while a bunch of TF will appear in the port stick around for a few turns and then disappear.  no sign of them as the enter or leave.  never any ASW around here, not even in the air as far as I can tell

then i go to christmas island, I had no idea that he had his entire fleet there (this was a couple of months ago) i set a sub to lay some mines in the port just for the heck of it and lo and behold the Enterprise is sitting there, I start reconning the base and he had like 50 ships there.  I had several subs around the port and didnt see em until I pushed a sub right into the port!  so i have cordoned off the base and despite comings and goings, no contacts besides a few ASW Surface ships every week or so, though today I saw a TK TF and was promptly DCd, but I was just thrilled to have a siting on a ship!

In 1942 there is little reason for the RN to sortie from Colombo (assuming the main units are there) unless KB is approaching or the American carriers are in the area. The RN doesn't have the carrier cap to fight Japanese land air bases in SE Asia, particularly after their CVs are forced to withdraw. You're likely seeing cargo convoys bringing supplies and fuel to Colombo. The Brits don't have a lot of air resources to devote to ASW at the start, as naval search is a higher priority.

April 2, 1945. The USS Henrico, supporting the invasion of Okinawa, is struck by a Francis operating as a Kamikaze, killing 51. Among the wounded was the father of this poster.

React to 1 ( as I see you have checked) and Time to linger for each control point of your 3 patrol points set to 1 or more.  Make sure your patrol endpoints are equal to or more than 2 hexes apart.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

paul,

Remember that when you go into a hot patrol zone to move in and out of the search range of the enemy planes...not across. This will help minimize your spotting level and maximize the length of patrol for any given level of ASW. Set subs in groups of 3-4 and move together for your primary target zones. Always Patrol Karachi greater area. There are a number of good threads on empire sub placements in 42. I would keep a dozen fast subs for fleet action to flood active combat zones. The remainder will rotate in and out of the primary patrol zones.
