Back from "Dark Side of the Moon" - NY59Giants (A) vs Seille (J)

Post by ny59giants »

This will be a re-start of a game vs Seille (Juergen) that went until June 42. We had meet on an AAR that I cannot remember in late 2010 and since he had never played a PBEM, I volunteered to play teacher. We used the various Beta patches. Once the Beta got stable we agreed to start over. This time the gloves are off.

I have decided to do an AAR on my efforts as the Allies playing Scenario 2 vs Seille. We are at 15 March 42 and only Bataan and Bandoeng (Java) offer any form of resistance in the SRA. The Japanese army is at the gates of both.

On Luzon, Juergen has 5th Div, 4th Div, 38th Div, 65th Bde, 48th Div, 16th Div, 2nd Div, 6th Gds Div, and 90th Inf Rgt.

On Java, he has Imperial Gds Div, 18th Div, 41Inf/30th Div, 21st Div, 33rd Div, and 146 Inf/56th Div.

He has all of Burma. In our previous game, his use of air power had wiped out most of my troops, so there was very little resistance here this time.

In China, the front has stabilized with Sian and Yenen captured in the north and Kukong in the south. My retreating troops from Kukong along with a Corp crossing from Hengyang into that clear terrain were able to trash 2 1/3 division worth of troops. AVG was able to keep his fighters and bombers off my troops and his deliberate attack was not favorable to him. The Chinese shock attack got 2:1 odds and ended his offense in southern China. He now has over 100 Zero and Oscars flying sweeps over Hengyang and escorting in bombers.

Australia is quiet and all is still in Allied possession. In late Feb 42, he had two CV TF operating off of NW Australia. KB had only Akagi, Soryu, Shokaku, and Zuikuka operating off Port Moresby and Horn Island. For weeks he had CV Kaga and Hiryu along with CVL Ryujo in the Java Sea pounding everything in Java while mini-KB of CVE Hosho, CVL Zuiho and Shoho used trapped ships at Broome and Port Hedland for target practice. The American CVs (Sara, Lex, Enterprise, and Yorktown) were at Aukland taking a day each to refuel. British CV Indomitable was able to meet up off of Albany with the 4 American CVs. I lost his 2 CV TF for a few days and started to move mine SE, but PBYs picked them up again. Halsey ordered the 5 CVs to head back. I ended one turn close enough that a decision had to be made on whether to go full speed to get within range or restrict movement to stay 11 hexes away (and just outside of Jake search radius). Due to low fuel situation in Perth area, I was more cautious and I missed at least mini-KB by one day. Such are the fortunes of war. [:(] In hindsight, I should have been more aggressive.

South Pacific - he has not gone past G-canal area. I am building up my defensive line further away.

The 5 Allied CVs are at anchor at Aukland while the Northhampton Class CAs and DDs undergo overdue upgrades. CV Hornet is in transit from Panama. CV Formidable has left Cape Town with Force Z as escorts. I have an extra Marine air uniton each American CV to boast combat power and survivability.

Intel showed 146 Inf/56 Div prepping for Vava'u. I have the full Americal Div there plus much more. A showdown in the South Pacific may happen once the two sieges end, but I have prep time working for me.

Details on each area to follow. We usually get one turn done per day and 2 or 3 on Saturday and Sunday. I have another PBEM game as Japan using Scenario 2 in Dec 42. Those damn Tojo are killing the Allied fighters in huge numbers, so the Allied player in me fears those beast in less than 4 months.

North China

2 hexes NW of Sian is 2354 Assault Strength (AS)
2 hexes North of Sian is 1771 AS
NW of Yenan is the left over forces from Yenan that is bombed by 50 to 75 bombers daily. They will soon disappear from the map.

South China

Due East from Changsha is 1802 AS (Juergen has bombarded those troops so all are above 50 experience levels even after I told him that it would increase experience levels).

SE of Changsha is 1196 AS

Hengyang has 1970 AS. Troops and AF is bombed daily, weather permitting. AVG has been in and out of there to date. AVG has a service rating of 3, so they don't stay there long.

RAF 222 is less than 180 miles from Chungking. I fly it from Ledo and it will help me play cat and mouse with my fighters.

India - Burma

Chittagong - 412 AS (17th Indian Div) with forts at 3 (71%). Some of my short legged Dutch subs headed here to refuel and then patrol down to Rangoon to spot and get a crack at any BB (Bombardment) TF (Juergen used them on Chittagong and Diamond Harbor last time).

Comilla - 473 AS (6th Aus Div) with forts 3(9%)

Imphal - 621 AS (1st Burma Div & 5th Chinese Corp) with forts 3 (42%)

Ledo - 1 hex SW is RM Heavy AA Rgt which is 'trying' to sneak her way into China buy remaining two hexes from Mytkyina on its way to 1 NE of Paoshan. I cannot get enough supply into China, but if I can get this AA there, I may try to get another one or two there by the same method. Got to get those Japanese bombers above 10k. [;)]

Diamond Harbor - 466 AS

Calcutta - first thing here is getting the AF to level 7 so I could upgrade airframes. Now the forts are at 3 (75%) with 1437 AS

Vizagapatnam & Cocanada - just over 140 AS each with forts over 3 and 'slowly' building towards 4. Not enough to stop an invasion, but hopefully a large enough speed bump if he comes here.

51st PG - 2 x P40E are here with a P-36 at Cape Town. Getting some of 10th Air Force over here early by moving them to Eastern USA and then transfer to Cape Town (no need for transports).
VP-101 (PBY-4) and VP-14 (PBY-5) are at Diamond Harbor and Colombo, respectfully, due to the shortage of enough naval search in India. This is SOP for me to send 2 PBY groups to India

Since I did a short hook into Chittagong as Japan, I'm preparing for that plus other likely areas.

aren't you too exposed in southern India if he comes for a full scale invasion? (probably i'm a bit paranoid about India right now)...i mean building your main defensive line so much south could be risky...if he invades somewhere else you'll have to run away from those positions...and haven't spent time to build up a defensive line more northwards, you'll find yourselef a little exposed...don't u think?

Western India

Ceylon - I have not added any troops here. I will take my second AA unit out soon (22 AA Bde). I'm not leaving 72 heavy AA guns here. There is very few ships here. Most are at Bombay and Karachi.

Madras - 480 AS with forts 4

Warangal - only 141 AS with forts at 3 (34%). I have three recently arrived Australian engineer units (at Karachi) headed here.

Raipur - empty!! [X(] Per GreyJoys last post, I will need to 'para proof' this base.

GJ - If you look at my troop disposition, all but Imphal are on rail lines for quick movement. I also look at Intel reports each turn as some info comes in once and not again. Invasions of India come along a few well defined lines - Chittagong, Diamond Harbor, Viza area, and/or Ceylon. Very few avoid all these and land below Bombay. I'm trying to set up the most likely, but he has almost all known 'free' division on Java and Luzon right now. Those two sieges should end in less than one month, then phase 2 will be.....?? That is the guessing game right now. I say South Pacific and have all my CVs there or headed there. If I'm going to get a shot at his CVs, I want to do so before they resize.

Cape Town

I have the American 27th Div here (needs PP). This is my reserve that will go to India or Australia as needed.

British TKs - recently I thought about how to use them more efficiently. Thus, all the 16 spd TKs will head to the USA. The 14 spd TKs will operate as follows: capacity 9430 from Cape Town to Perth and the 8075 and 10800 capacity will go from Abadan to Cape Town. Those with slower spd and shorter legs will go from Abadan to India. If anybody has a more efficient method, please share.

CV Hornet is in transit from Panama to South Pacific. I noticed that her rested (morale 99) air units were not gaining any experience when set to train at 100%. I send PM to Michael M.

Here is his reply...
Off-map groups don't run normal training flights.
They only gain from the experience of other pilots in same group.

Interesting that it hasn't been noticed before. ASW and naval search, as well as CAP, are all handled as 'patrols' which is also how training flights are processed.
But the other 'patrols' can't run from offmap, otherwise it would be spotting ships, subs, etc.

I'll set up a special case for training flights when 'off-map'.

Michael

Hopefully, a fix will be out in the next Beta version.

March 15, 16, & 17

I will refrain from posting many Combat Reports, but since this AAR is starting a few months into the war, this will show what is happening right now.

15th - Vava'u forts went up to 4. An ACM at LA sinks from hitting a mine will maintaining the minefield. Juergen hoped it was one of my subs.

16th - Sturgeon in operating south of Truk and is attacked by 2 DD ASW TF, but survives. 15th Div almost wipes out a War Area HQ 2 hexes SW of Hengyang that didn't make it out of Kukong quick enough. Aukalnd port goes to 8, Chungking AF to 7, and Tahiti port to 4. Right now, Tahiti is my South Pacific hub for supply and fuel as I pointed out to GreyJoy.

The game is in a siege mentality right now around Bandoeng on Java and Bataan on Luzon. Hengyang is southern China is attacked daily and I don't have enough supplies there to get the final 18% of forts for level 4 completed. I have troops in northern China hit as he built up Sian AF to level 5 or greater. In China, the problem is supplies...or lack of them. [:(] The changes in OOB was to increase Chinese rifle from 200 to 350 when we did the re-start, so I have too many mouths to feed right now. Recon fly over Burma/India border bases.

Meanwhile, I use my USA bases AKs to move supplies and fuel out of USA quickly after a short time to either upgrade or repair damage. Those APs that upgrade to APA in early 43 are moved to Mare Island to avoid use and being sunk.

Ships Sunk to Date - It has not been bad for either side

Bataan Falls!!

Post by ny59giants »

March 18th & 19th - Bataan Falls!!

Subs: I-171 is hit once 3 hexes ESE from Pago Pago as a reinforcement convoy heads in.

Philippines: A BB TF of 4 CAs & 4 CLs hit the base at Cagayan. On the 18th, a deliberate attack at Bataan (840:255) reduces the forts to 1. Then, the base falls on the 19th (727:219) with the Allies suffering 30,287 casualties. It will take over a week for them to march back to Manila and have some R&R time before they are ready for another attack somewhere. I take this holdout as a moral victory. [:)]

China: Daily bombing attacks continue to hit Hengyang (about 75 bombers per day). Now, the troops retreating from Yenan are left alone and the two stacks of Chinese 2 hexes NE of Sian are targeted by about 100 bombers. They are too far away from any potential fighter support from the Allies.

India/Burma: Ledo sees 9 Sally hit the base at night and 25 Betty hit the 17th Indian Div at Chittagong.

Java: Bandoeng is attacked with 972 vs my 1672 and forts are reduced to 1.

Bases expansion - Hobart goes to AF 5, Wellington goes to AF 6, and Bora Bora port goes to 2 (allowing the CD guns to finally unload as the 2 xAPs were just over 6,000 in size).

CV Hornet TF enters the map and heads for Tahiti to refuel before heading to Aukland.

RE: Bataan Falls!!

Post by ny59giants »

March 20th & 21st

Subs: I-5 is run over by a dozen Clemson Class DDs on their way into San Fran @ 216,74 [4 SW of San Fran], no hits. They are going to convert to APDs. I-159 is on the SW corner of Australia 49,152 [3 west of Albany] and an ASW TF on way to Perth misses it. Trigger is off of Sakhalin Island to interdict his resource convoys (a total of 6 subs will work in northern Japan soon).

Philippines: All the bases on Mindanao except Cagayan are captured. CVL Zuiho has their Kates attack Cebu daily.

China: over 170 Sally, Lily, and Nicks hit the stack two hexes due north of Sian. 76th Corp receives 617 casualties.

Burma/India: [>:]

Java: over 100 Sally and Lily continue to hit Bandoeng and he conducts daily bombardment attacks.

Bases: Ducth Harbor port goes to 4, Tongatapu has AF go to 4 and forts to 1 (this base is being built up to form southern line of resistance in South Pacific, Pearl forts to 5, Bombay and Karchi forts to 3, Aitutaki port to 2 (AFs will build up to allow stop off between Tahiti and South Pacific bases transfer).

Notes: Two large TFs with fuel and supplies arrive at Perth and Albany from Cape Town and Abadan. I'm using the Dominion Class xAKs to carry fuel while Euro M carry supplies. The 16 spd TKs will head to South Pacific and then USA afterwards while others head back to Cape Town. I ran this TK TF down western map edge, but I cannot afford to try my luck there again. Better safe than sorry. [;)]

China - Air Attacks!!

Post by ny59giants »

March 22nd & 23rd - Massive air attacks in China

Subs: I-19 misses the small AO TF 3 hexes west of San Fran. This TF has been busy trying to TF returning to San Fran from the South Pacific that don't have enough to make it all the way back. I have another one or two TF without enough fuel to return, so they will refill fuel and head back out.

China: 2 hexes due north of Sian in a rough terrain, I have a stack of units that had 1774 AS four days ago. Now, it is down to around 1200. Over two days of air attacks by over 200 bombers and two deliberate attacks from 8 divisions and a mixed brigade have taken their toll. [:(] The only good news is their experience levels are at or very close to 50. Meanwhile, in south China, another 100 plus bomber have been hitting Changsha, Hengyang, and/or Kweilin. On the 23rd, all of AVG set an ambush at Kweilin and shot down 20 Oscars, Sonia, and Sally for only 2 P-40s. Now, they head back to safety at Chungking. Without the ability to even conduct hit and run attacks in the north and the poor supply situation, IMO the north will be lost at some point.

Burma/India: Fast Transport TF lands at port Blair. Just recon flights over bases on India/Burma border.

Java:Bandoeng is attacked again at 1390:1546 (Allies) and forts are down to 0. The supplies are reduced to less than 9,000. If I can last to April 1st, I will be happy. Zeros from carriers Kaga, Hiryu, Ryujo, and Shoho fly from Batavia over Bandoeng giving me free intel.

Bases: Tongatatpu forts to 2, Changsha forts to 5, Madras AF to 7, and Bora Bora AF to 1.

Notes: China is paying a steep price right now while all but Java is quiet. Good news in the long run, but not if your Chinese. Overdue upgrades will be completed at Aukland on carrier fleets warships except the 4 Northampton Class CAs (need another 2 weeks) tomorrow.

RE: China - Under Attacks!!

Post by ny59giants »

March 24th & 25th: China situation steadily getting worse

Subs: I-16 is one hex east of Christmas Island and misses a transport TF trying to return to USA, but needs to get a "Tactical Refuel" to make it home from Christmas. I-3 is 4 hexes SW of San Fran and misses more transports headed home. Truant attempts to hit Fast Transports of of western Sumatra and gets slight damage. Enough to send her to Colombo for quick repairs.

China: A series of sweeps (24 Zero - 68 Oscars & 25 Nicks - 3 Oscars - 3 Zero - 39 Oscar & 27 Zero - 10 Oscar & 19 Sally) over Chungking. A series of deliberate attacks 2 hexes north of Sian breaks through (1454:1077 and then 974:433). The Chinese suffer 9449 casualties and have over 735 squads destroyed. To make matters worse, Chungking now has less than 20k in supply. Three hexes NW of Yenan is savaged again with 235:3 odds. Northern China's days seem to be numbered. The mega-stack has retreated units added to it to bring its Assault Value to 2972.
How do you slow this down??

India/Burma: Port Blair is captured by a SNLF company.

Java: Bandoeng is attacked on 25th and comes close to falling (2079:1162) as forts remain at 0. The last fortress in SRA will fall by end of month.

Philippines: Cagayan is hit again by a 2 BB and CL TF and then attacked by three Naval Guards. The odds go in the Allied favor for once (45:483)

Bases: Sydney AF to 9, Diego Garcia AF to 1, Albany port to 5, Christchurch port to 5, and Aitutaki AF to 1.

Notes: CV Hornet TF arrives at Tahiti to refuel before heading to Aukland.

RE: China - Under Attacks!!

Post by ny59giants »

I don't know how I can slow him down in China when he has close to 500 planes committed there. He took out this strong stack of troops (north of Sian) after about 10 days worth of air attacks and multiple deliberate attacks. Right now, his focus is there and finishing up the last remaining fortress in Java. I have to feel good that he is leaving the rest of the map alone.

I have a suspicion that he may headed to the South Pacific, but he has taken Tulagi as the farthest point in that direction. No build up of bases in the Solomons. I have just finished landing supplies at Suva to bring it up to 41k, but troops have not been added except for 2 x BF (200 AS). Tongatapu has only 43 AS with 22k supply and forts near 3. However, I have a division at San Fran prepping for here and needs another 28 days before she can be loaded. Vava'u anchors the center with 445 AS behind forts at 4(25%) and 80k supply. Pago Pago has 418 AS with 42k supply and forts at 3 (59%). Aitutaki in the Cook Islands has small BFs and construction units to build the expanding base beyond ports 2 and AF 1. The main South Pacific hub is Tahiti with 228 AS, 50k in supply, 42k in fuel, and most ships headed to and from here.

I have India quiet for the whole war and I was able to save most of the army in Burma. I feel good about my possibilities if he comes here. Australia is now better off as a large shipment of fuel is almost unloaded at Perth and another 200k is a few days away from NZ that will end up here. However, I have abandoned northern coastal area and no troops besides the 18th UK Division (Perth) have been added to the very large island.

I have the second British CV arriving on map from Cape Town in two days (with Force Z) and CV Hornet is to leave Tahiti. All 7 CVs will meet up at Aukland. If he doesn't come south with more than just 4 heavy CVs, I'll go forth to give battle.

I'm waiting for intel reports or actual sightings to show me what is next. April will be interesting as will have plenty of troops to overwhelm me somewhere. I just train pilots and build up bases/forts for now. Most of my South Pacific subs are nearing Aukland to get their 4/42 upgrade (need that radar).

Bandoeng falls - ends resistance on Java

Post by ny59giants »

March 26th & 27th: Java falls!!

Subs: I-1, I-3, I-4, I-5, ,I-26, and I-19 are all operating off the coast of San Fran. I-3 sinks a xAK that was part of the routine convoy headed to Pearl. I-26 sinks the small Australian AO about 15 hexes off the coast in a mid-ocean intercept. I-21 misses transports 2 hexes SW of Tahiti. There are 4 subs within 3 hexes of Vava'u and the port has been mined. Most of my Clemson Class DDs are converting to APDs at San Fran and I lack sufficient ASW ships to go hunting...for now.

China: The large stack 2 hexes NW of Sian is now subject to repeated ground attacks. Over 100 bombers hit the hex each day. 27 Oscars did a sweep of Chungking and AVG along with 8 I-15 bring down 7 for the cost of only 2.

Burma/India: [>:]

Java: Bandoeng falls on the 27th and I suffer 9114 casualties. Java and the SRA are in Japanese hands until MacArthur returns.

Philippines: Cebu and Cagayan form the only organized resistance left and have minor air attacks launched each day.

Bases: Tongatatpu forts to 3, Penrhyn port to 2, Port Augusta AF to 6, and Dunedin port to 6.

Notes: At least 13 divisions plus a few brigades are now available for action. The level of air attacks in China have slowed down in China the last few days. So, the men wait for the shoe to drop. But where?!?

March 28th & 29th - Operational tempo in China slackens

Subs: Seadragon is depth charged by 2 DDs 5 hexes south of Truk, but is not hit. I-1 is attacked by an ASW TF of 2 APDs and 1 DD 3 hexes south of San Fran.

China: 2 hexes NW of Sian is hit by 2 groups (27 to 31/ea) of Lily and one of Sally daily while a group of Nicks alternates with troops in far north. 5 units 'appear' to be headed for Kweilin (630 AS with forts at 3[57%]) so I have two corp (about 200 AS each) ordered to get there. I have 59 Aviation Support, so I can use part of AVG, if needed.

India/Burma: All the dot bases between Port Blair and Sabang are now captured via Fast Transport.

Philippines: 27 Vals from Davao hit the troops at Cagayan, while the whole 48th Division is unloaded there. 25 Lily and 27 Helens from Luzon hit the troops at Cebu.

Bases: Asansol AF goes to 4 (I have two groups of P-40E training there), Cape Town port goes to 8 (switch over to get AF to 7 now so group can upgrade from P-26 to P-40B), Chittagong forts to 4, Bora Bora AF to 2, and Adelaide AF to 5.

Notes:no intel on possible divisions prepping for somewhere else yet. I'll try to get most of the 4/42 upgrades done now while it seems quiet.

March 30th & 31st: Chungking is hit hard on 31st

Subs:I-3 is found by ASW TF 4 hexes SW of San Fran. She puts a TT into an ADP [28-89-(65)-26(24)-13]. However, I-3 gets two direct depth charge hits and has to surface where the DD and APD that were undamaged are unable to sink her.

China: Chungking is hit hard on the 31st by over 270 aircraft. The Allied player did not have any CAP. [:@] Three groups of Oscar and then a Zero group sweep the skies and find no resistance. Then, the bombers come in and destroy 20 planes on the ground and damage the AF. It would have been better if my planes were destroyed in A2A combat. C'est la vie!! The remnants from Yenan are attacked at 75:17 odds near Niagia in the north and retreat. Forces are now to the NE of Kweilin on the rail/road to cut off forces from the east (Hengyang), but 4 Corps oare ordered to move towards this base.

India/Burma: [>:]

Philippines: Cagayan is hit by a BB TF of 4 CA and 4 CL.

Bases: Sydney forts to 3, Aitutaki AF to 2, Christmas Island forts to 5, and Delhi AF to 6

Notes: Nothing but logistics going on in background. I have two large TFs in San Fran loading up on fuel. One will be TKs and xAKs that have liquid capacity with speed 14 and under in one while the other will be those with 16 speed or greater. 6 escorts (DD/APD/DMS) will be assigned each. To those readers of my AAR, I hope to have some action here eventually. [;)]
