question about supply hoarding at bombay and sydney
On April 22 1942, Sydney has 650,080 supply and Bombay has 597696. Meanwhile supply landed at townsville, cairns and darwin just disappears. I have read elsewhere that its a mistake to use multiple supply draws, and i tend to use none, but that is clearly not working.
Similarly, I landed about 30000 supply into Cagayan which had about 600 AV and was enemy occupied and about 2/3 of the supply immediately shifted next door to Butuan which was occupied by one refitting inf bn that had a current AV of 1.
Can anyone provide some insight into how to correct some of this?

Are you increasing the required supply setting on the individual base display screens? (Middle left of the screen)

RE: question about supply hoarding at bombay and sydney
Im doing that now at 3 or 4 locations in India and Australia, but I was under the impression that requesting supply was not to be overused or it would screw up supply flow.
However, my real questions are:
Is it WAD if sydney and bombay starve their countries for supply when no requests are made?
If not, what factors are contributing to this hoarding?
What is the logic behind the Cagayan/Butuan situation?

my version is 1106i

When you say starve though- Townsville etc will only draw enough supply to match the units you have based there. Without using the draw/stockpile supply button it would be common to have the base go into the yellow (alert) status if you significantly increased the LCU at the base (until the supply routines catch up).

Darwin and environs consistently starve. I know the supply path is bottlenecked at alice springs, but it seems perfectly capable of stealing supply back when i offload in darwin.
At Townsville, I'm just frustrated that I can't keep the level above 20,000. It always falls back to ~4000, which screws up replacements, etc.
As I have said, I have noted more than once the warnings not to putout too many competing supply requests, but there seems no other way to get intentional supply offloads to stay put at perth townsville cairns etc
And again, I can't see the logic at all of supply movement on Davao.
In a second instance at oroquieta, i dropped about 3000 supplies to a small force that was defending in that occupied hex. 2400 of the supplies immediately slithered through the jungle to completely unoccupied Dumanquilas. On the very next turn, Dumanquilas surrendered due to Japanese occupied Cotobato. This event preceded the even larger supply shift out of Cagayan to Butuan. Actually, I saved Davao (vs AI), but im pretty bemused at some of this.

Darwin and co starving isn't a huge suprise- you'll need to set stockpile levles at Katherine/Darwin. Don't forget command/hq units create their own "feed me" signs on top of the normal LCU requirement.
You'll only really get into trouble using the stockpile settings when you're asking for more supply (via stockpiling) than is available on the land mass your setting them on. If Sydney has buckets of supply there's not problem requesting 25K at Townsville, Brisbane etc.

Kinda would be nice if supply got fixed someday. Never has worked right in AE.

Bases will attempt to maintain 3 times the level you set them to request. If you want Townsville to maintain 20k then set it to request 7k. I have Townsville set at 5.7k and it's been maintaining 17k just as it should. The problem with not setting request levels out of a fear of overdrawing is that critical bases that need certain supply levels to facilitate replacements and upgrades will always be shortchanged. Don't fear the draw so mauch and set your important bases to draw the levels you need them to have.
Here is a screenie of Townsville in late Sep '42. I have 1.1 million supply in Sydney.

At the same time Darwin has 156k supply with a draw set to 4k. I don't rely on supply draw for supply on the west coast of Australia. All supply for that region cames directly from Capetown. I run regular cargo transports to each of the ports with heavy emphasis on Darwin and Perth. The only strangeness I see is at Derby and Broome. No matter how much supply I land at Derby it all seems to end up at Broome. Broome has 69k supply with a daw set to 2.5k. Derby only has 14k supply, but it is more than enough.
oh, btw I'm playing 1106p2

I am not sure that it is broke. I would say the mechanism on how it is supposed to work is poorly explained. Especially when you are going through paths that do not have railroads.

No, its broke. When units are dying in bases from lack of supply while units out in the jungle that are getting their supplies through those very same bases are fully stocked, its broken and needs fixing.

Maybe you are not playing latest versions, because I am not seeing anything like that in my games.

Thanks especially for replies 7 9 and 10
question for HansBolter about your screenshots:
I see the word No in yellow to the left of the supply oil resource and fuel values. I suppose this to be new functionality as I don't see that in 1106i
Could you provide some background?
perhaps a related statement. I am impressed that you can hold 156k at Darwin with only 4k requested.

later beta versions add an ability to stockpile supplies so bases won't have them drawn away
Darwin gets supply from cargo TFs with 3 large 6k cargo ships, Perth gets the same and all the other ports get single ship deliveries
Capetown usually has plenty of supply, but some times you have to hold the supply convoys back while awaiting the arrival of a "convoy" with fuel as that seems to be item in shortest supply there.

Oh i really really want the new patch for China , for the same reason as stated -cities starve while i send troops out in rotation to forage for supply , its annoying and fiddly (not to mention silly).
Any plans for a fuel draw like supply ? would be a life saver in Australia , again micro managing fuel levels using small AO's and Tk's is a pain in the butt.
FYI i tried the supply draw button and its hopeless (in china).

The situation in OZ is WAD as far as I remember from earlier threads. Cause in reality the Aussies had to transport much stuff with coastal shipping. Which can be intercepted/sunk. Changing this would probably add too much an advantage to the Allied in this area - if everythings flows from Perth to Brisbane/Sidney etc. overland the Jap can not interdict this flow. Of course I agree it is a pain [;)]
Supply in China is kind of a miracle still, but I post most troops now outside cities if possible. Even in cities sometimes supply gets through. However all my suplly routes are now open from India to China and I also fly some more in - took back also some cities which produce supply (light industry). So situation can be improved - but if Jap is on the advance and Burma road closed than it is a nightmare there sometimes.
