Memorial Day

Post by JWE »

Grew up with Jack Rankin. Lived two houses down. We fought each other, learned to drink together, shared a girlfriend. Graduated high school the same time. Jack wanted to be a policeman. Joined up right out of the box. Volunteered for Airborne, did good, and was assigned to III/502nd. One of the best NCOs they had. I know, because I asked.

He alway called me a pussy, 'cause I went to college. But then, it was my turn, and I ended up in Airborne too, but in a different branch. I had shit on my collar, he had shit on his sleve, but we were the same two boys from so long ago. We hooked up once, only once, in Saigon, and got seriously shitfaced, talking about George Church and his little brother Ed (both of them at II-Corps in a nice safe place, at the time). We swore eternal brotherhood and cut our palms and clasped them together in a grip of blood and love.

We both went about our business. SFC James (Jack) Wilson Rankin, 2502 Sunset Drive, Tampa, Florida, III/502nd PIR, kia July 3, 1970, Firebase Ripcord.

God rest and keep you, Jack. And all who sail with you, my brother. Your friend, John.

John:

Thank you for posting that. Only as long as we remember will there be a Memorial Day.

Steve Bishop and Mike McCoy. Don't care to go into the story, but they both have no family left alive and the only people who remember them are those of us who were there.
