What famous battlefield?

Post by JJKettunen »

The scale is 10 miles per hex. Obvious giveaways like map labels have been removed from this version. Do you know, or can you guess, what famous battlefield is modelled here with the ATG-editor?

Not Normandy, because no hedgerows.
Not the Bulge, because no forest.
Not Stalingrad because no big river and no big city.
Not Leningrad because no big city and no big river.
Not Arnhem because no big river, no big city and no big bridge.

Could be the starting area of Market Garden.

Maybe Smolensk?

Geesh, what time period? WWII I reckon?
Seeing the layout I'd say somewhere in southern Russia, maybe Kiev?

Kursk ???

...is the city on the northern edge of the map. Belgorod is on the southern edge of the shown area. Prokhorovka is located on the hex where the railroad going north of Belgorod first turns to northeast and then north again before going around the Psel river.

Tanks, tanks, tanks! (although not as many as some mythological accounts suggest...)

Sounds like a cool scenario !

History began July 4th, 1776. Anything before that was a mistake.

For your information, this is going to take a lot of time since I'm building everything form scratch, SFTs included.

For example, attackpower values for the tanks take into consideration, along with the inherent characteristics of the weapons they carry, mobility and reliability (vs infantry) plus fire control (vs armour). Hitpoints for them are derived from the armour (front, side and top). Initial testing shows that the results are as desired.

I'll start a thread on the mod/scen forum later when I have more to report.

Hi Keke.

A tip. Why not import the SFTs from another masterfile. Then you will not have to make them from scratch. One example of historical eastfront SFTs is the Ostfront masterfile (which i used as a foundation for my FITE SFTs) i could also send you my equipment masterfile. The germans are partly filled in already and you could continue on that. There are something like 100+ german SFT pictures among other things.

Hi Grymme,

I have checked Ostfront but wasn't altogether happy with its SFTs (a lot of quality work there though), and I enjoy doing them, although it is a time consuming process.

On the other hand I have all the data needed in a spreadsheet, so importing a masterfile and editing it would speed it up for sure. I'd need graphical help later in any case. So if you are willing to share your SFTs for this purpose it would be appreciated. I'll PM you my contact info. Cheers!

It would be cool if SFTs could be exported and imported via XLS-files...

I would prefer a non-proprietary format, but the idea is sound. This would open up for external editors. While we're at it, we might as well request that maps, events, action cards and location types becomes import/exportable as formatted text files.

I'm not going to get my hopes up though. Exports are easy, just parse everything to a file. In imports, on the other hand, there needs to be a lot of checks as to not corrupt anything. I would not like to be the one to rule out all the possible bugs that can arise from poorly formatted inputs.
