Making History I & II: A 41-45 GC

Post by fiva55 »

Background

At precisely 0315 hours on the morning of 22 June 1941, as the last minutes of
the shortest night of the year ticked away, a storm of shellfire from thousands
of German artillery pieces shattered the calm along a 1,800km (1,080-mile)
front.

As the red blaze of explosives reinforced the feeble light of a new dawn, thirty
Luftwaffe bombers manned by handpicked crews and flying in groups of threes
delivered terror and destruction to Soviet airfields and cities.

Minutes later, from Memel' on the Baltic Seas outhward to the Prut River, the
first wave of 3,5 million German soldiers deployed along the border lunged
forward, beginning the greatest military offensive the German Army had ever
undertaken.

Barbarossa had begun.

My first 41 GC, though I like to think that I have at least mastered the basics of this game[:D].
Feel free to comment on my opening moves.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Army Group North

AGN, spearheaded by 4th Panzer Group, has been tasked with the capture of Leningrad. To ensure that this
goal is achieved, they have been reinforced by XXIII crops from 9th Army and XXXIX PzCrps from 3rd Panzer
Group.

The first week goes well, with the Daugava river crossed in force.

ARMY GROUP SOUTH

AGS first objective is Kharkov. Once captured, they will be ordered to head to Stalino.
The Crimea is a target of opportunity. To ensure the most efficient use of our armoured forces,
1st Panzer group has exchanged XIV Panzer corps for XXXXVI Panzer corps from 2nd Panzer Group.

The first week goes well, with 1st Panzer Group reaching the Romanians with ease.

Good opening for a "rookie" [:D]

One issue in the south. Your rail repair may have some issues since it isn't connected into your "net" since the two hexes with red in them are not connected with each other by rail. The rail actually follows the green line. In order to get hooked in, you would have to repair that hex. I have made the same mistake as well.

Also, if you have completed movement, if I was the Russian, I would push that infantry division across the border to not only screw up your rail line, but to also send air and HQ units packing.

For AGC, I don't know that i am a fan of sending 9th army south to form a smaller pocket. I usually feel a shortage of infantry since the front opens up so much to the north from the border, so I usually try to get 9th army moving forward as well as I can. 4th army seems to have enough infantry that they can not only advance in sufficient strength, but also have enough left over to do most of the mop up work.

Always enjoy your AAR's.

I've had a bad experience with trying to bag routed units in AGN turn 1, as they got unready on soviet turn 1 and where able to reconnect those would be pockets, hope you got better luck.

Anyway, just be careful with the Crimea, i "heard" soviets can do some nifty disembarks if you don't Garrison your ports.

The only beef I would have with opening is in agreement with Klydon: 9th army needs to hump it east as fast as possible, along with 4th army. They need to get to the land bridge at Vitebsk quickly.

Thanks Klydon, totally missed that part of the rail. And my opponent did displace my airfields, I should be more careful with them.

ARMY GROUP NORTH
END OF TURN 2 OVERVIEW

Recon shows that the Soviets have already manned the Pskov line. To prevent them from digging in too deep,
4th Panzer Army has been ordered to breach that line asap. Most of the supporting infantry have already
crossed the Daugava, with XXIII Corps left behind to mop up the remaining infantry, before securing the gap
between AGN and AGC.

ARMY GROUP CENTER
END OF TURN 2 OVERVIEW

In this sector, Soviet troops manned a line behind the Bezezina river, delaying our advance towards the Dnepr.
The loss of one PzCrps is felt by 3rd Pz Group, so 3rd and 2nd Panzer group settle for blowing away the Soviet
defence instead of encircling them. Supporting infantry has started to move up, but is still well behind.

Meanwhile, XIV Pz Corps has moved up to reinforce AGC.

ARMY GROUP SOUTH
END OF TURN 2 OVERVIEW

A large concentration of troops has been identified around Rovno. 1st Pz Group
has been redirected to eliminate this threat together with XXXVI PzCrps. Once
dealt with, the Soviets will either have to heavily reinforce their southern
sector, or allow our troops free reign.

6th Army has already started moving up to support the advance of the panzers,
while large parts of 17th Army, together with the Romanian 3rd Army, are left
behind to mop up the remaining Soviets behind our lines.

Along the Romanian border, the Soviets have abandoned their positions. German
and Romanian infantry have started advancing, but were unable to catch up.

BEGIN OF TURN 3 FRONT LINES

Notable points

North
[*]In the north, the Soviets still haven't abandoned the Pskov Line. The Luga line is still largely unmanned.

Center
[*]Northwest of Minsk, a security regiment breaks a small pocket.
[*]Spearheads of 2nd Panzer group escape isolation by one hex.

South
[*]Soviet troops near Rovno break out the encirclement. However, by now they are well behind our frontlines.
[*]The river line near Kiev shows the signs of a beginning carpet defence, same for the front between D-town and Z-Town. There is still a notable gap in the Soviet defence between Cherkassy and D-Town.

BEGIN OF TURN 4 FRONT LINES

Notable points

North
[*]In the north, the Soviets have pulled back the Pskov line 20 miles. Recon shows that they are beginning to form the Luga line.

Center
[*]The entire spearhead of 3rd Panzer group has been isolated, with LVII PzCrps HQ getting overrun. This HQ is now recovering north of Riga. Emboldened by this success, the local Soviet commander rushes his troops forward, intending to finish the Germans once and for all.

South
[*]The Soviets increased the depth of their river line, but still haven't closed the gap between Cherkassy and D-town.

ARMY GROUP NORTH
END OF TURN 4 OVERVIEW

With help of the arrived infantry, the Pskov Line has been breached in force. 4th Panzer group makes excellent use of the 30 miles gap created by 18th Army, and rushes through towards Leningrad. Such is the speed of our advance, that when a bold panzer division commander arrives at the gates of Leningrad, the local party leader organizes a parade, thinking that the arriving tanks are Soviets retreating from the Pskov line.

With Leningrad as good as captured, one PzCrps has been diverted to help out AGC.
