The Power of Inexperience / GreyJoy(A)-Rader(J)

Post by GreyJoy »

Hi all, newby here and first AE pbem ever.
Rader has decided to exploit my greenness (just kidding) and so we are.

This is Scen 2, 1 day turn and these are the preferences and HRs:

- Non-historical turn but Japanese cannot invade deep in allied territory 1st turn (e.g., no Mersing Gambit)

-Just one Port attack on turn one
-Reliable torps off, allied damage control on
- No sweep/CAP above 20,000 ft (no stratosweeps)
-Para units must be whole before paradroppping (not fragments all over)
-Must pay PPs to cross borders that start *friendly* (e.g., Manchuria -> China, or India -> Burma). Note that you can cross borders that start out enemy (e.g., Kwangtung units can move into Russia).
-1 week russian activation if Japan decides to invade.
-Thai units can move into the Burma panhandle and Indochina.
-4Es on naval attack restricted to 15k and only one group per base.
-No city *or night* bombing under 20,000 ft (it's too powerful). Other than this, all city bombing (China, DEI is fine).
-landing or paradropping on non base/dot hex is forbidden.
No Allied Air or naval units in Russia are allowed, even if Russia is activated.

For the first turn i restricted myself to move only those TFs that were at sea and not in an aggressive fashion anyway. So basically my TFs will try to run away on first turn.
Didn't give any order to any Air, ground or ship unit in order to simulate the 7th dec suprise.

Rader, for what i've read in his previous AARs, seems a very aggressive and smart jap player...he invaded and defeated Russia, raided souther Oz and PH many times...will have to be very very cautious...
One thing Rader has already told me: China and Russia will be strongly active theatres...it's gonna be tough, i know.

I don't have a stretgy right now...don't really know what to do...think i'll learn and live day by day as the allies did in the first months of war...[:D]

1st Turn sent...the struggle may begin!

Good luck, sir!

Dismal times await, the Allied lot in life is to be a punching bag for six months at least, and as your honourable opponent has a killer rep that can be drawn out until mid 1943 I would have thought at a minimum.

...Thats a long time to get kicked about. But hopefully you will take your licks and win through in the end, every AFBs dream. [:)]

Yes, i know. i've already considered to lose Russia, northern Oz, SOPAC and half China by the end of 1942...and i'm studying (reading others AARs) how to survive first and secondly how to honorably seek for a final draw [:)]

BTW i think it's better to learn the hard way [:'(]

Thanks EUBanana for your support[&o]

Oh, forgot to say that we're still playing with the official patch and not the latest beta one cause my opponent feels it's too risky to update now till it goes official.
Really do not know which are the differences, so i'll wait and see

Was mistaken...it's a 2days turn!!! How to handle it?
What are the main differences? Any suggestion would be really appreciated...gotta say that this breaking news (well, stupid me not to have well written his mails) is scaring me a lot!!!

PBYs are your best friends with 2 day turns. Been there...done that. I would place one at Midway, two at Pearl, Christmas, Palmrya, Penrhyn Island (covers gap between Christmas and Pago Pago), Pago Pago, and Suva. Add in Sydney and Hobart (combine the fragments of all those BF on Tasmania) to give you warning of KB coming to southern Australia for a raid (I play both sides so I know about this usually happening).

Planning and more planning. Some of your ability to micro-manage your fleet is harder here and mistakes can hurt. KB and SC TF can get in to sink ships and out before you have a chance to react. You need to probably list some of your American ground units and decide where everybody is going (look at your reinforcements to see what you get up to 60 days). Those few engineer (construction types like EAB and SB) are very important for placement.

Look at some of those bases in either the Society Islands or Marquesas Islands that can be built up to a size 9 combination (port and AF) as refueling point to and from NZ/Oz (need to pile up endless amounts of fuel without spoilage.

I'll be back with more hints later.[;)]

Thx mate. I've already had the feeling that 2days-turn will mean a double effort by my side not to get caught by surprise by KB or SC raids.
Now what i'm finding difficult is how to plan some limited counteroffensive not having the chance to interact directly, having to wait for 2 days before changing orders...it's tough...but it's really fun!

Anyway, the first replay got in...PH has been pounded for 2 days and 6 of my BBs went down (they do not come back, right?..they're lost for good?) Virginia, Maryland, Arizona, Oklaoma, Pensylvenia and California....while tennesse and nevada are almost down with sys and fld damage on their 90s...
Japan lost 25 Vals, 25 Kates and 6 zeros over PH...not enough! My AA gunners have been really caught by surprise!

Anyway, nothing else much happened in the first two days... Japan landed at Tarawa, Maikin and on other empty islands down there.
He landed in Luzon (Vigan and Naga) and in Borneo (Miri) but not a single move in Malaya...seems really strange to me. I've read in every AAR that Japanese players usually follow the historical course of events in Malaya...the fact that he hasn't committed any air, naval or ground asset here may mean he's going somewhere else (directly to Northern Oz? Timor?)...a TF with 2 CS have been spotted in the Molucs and attacked by a couple of dutch bombers with no effect. What is he doing there? It doesn't seem a transport TF, so probably it's a recon TF sent there to stop the evacuation of the PI Fleet towards Darwin...i bet the baby KB is hidden somewhere behind it...

I decided to stay and fight in Malaya and in Sumatra. Won't commit any more unit but will try to use those i have there at best, without evacuating them.

In burma i'm trying to organize my defences, despite my forces seem week, understrenght and with exp and morale at their feet.
Still considering how to use the Flying tigers...strange enough i found that 2 out of 3 of their groups are attached to restricted chinese theatre...

China is a mess...still do not know what to do there...trying to move my units back to something that seem a defensive line but he started asap to carpet bombing everything there (HUGE amount of jap air operation in china) and i fear i'm gonno lose a lot of terrain very very soon!

What else? it took me one entire day to give orders for this second 2days/turn....was overwhelming! really!

Already formed many automatic convoys in order to start to resupply Oz, india and Alaska

Is there a way to shut down OZ HI industry?

No ship respawning in scenario 2. Ships sunk stay sunk (of course enemy ships sunk are subject to FOW).

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 10, 41

I won't copy everything here cause i think it's kinda boring for the readers... let's say that we haven't spotted a single landing in Malaya. His troops are taking the long route from alor Star, thus giving me time to organize a defensive perimeter around Singapore. He landed in other location in northern Borneo but nothing much happened. No sign of the baby KB...i'm getting nervous... i've seen that everyone uses the baby KB to support the operation in DEI-SRA....if she's not here...where is she deployed????
He keeps on landing in the Gilberts and Marshalls...i don't care much cause i have not any assets to face him there.
Japan landed also at Wewak...NG is becoming an active theatre!

My first small victory

Post by GreyJoy »

An exciting turn for me, to say the least !!!!!
Force Z managed to sneak through the jap air cover in the north of Borneo and managed to attack a transport TF moving away from conquered Miri...POW and Repulse savaged the escort first (sinking 2 valuable AVs among other ships) and then attacked the transports! Only the end of ammo stocks forced the brave brits to disengage....and....disengaging we've been caught by a strong jap BB TF...we were low on fuel and ammo, with Repulse that got a fish in her belly and some more minor problems to the other ships of the TF...i thought we were doomed...

BUT

My Admiral understood the danger and did not engage the enemy (who didn't push any forward)!!!!

Now Force Z is trying to escape the menace of subs (infesting those waters) and of the pursuing BB enemy force. Now he knows we're there and for sure he's gonna look for us. Time to run!

My other SC TF, named force Y (composed around CL Boise and CA Houston), who was operating in southern borneo, didn't achieve any notable result. Above all it didn't spot the enemy DDs that are chasing down our PI merchant fleet...it just wasted fuel and now it's operating in dangerous waters east of Borneo...gotta take it back...also because Baby KB appeared in the area...time to RUN!!!!

In the Hawaii, the KB finally left, moving towards Truk...some BBs and DDs are spotted moving north-east of PH....wonder were those ships are going without the KB escort [&:]

Reading others AARs i'm really starting to become paranoid....where is he aiming at? We're playing scen 2 and he didn't use yet one of his main land assets that are available in this scen...He's using just his minor units...so he's surely planning something...Malaya is still untouched...Sumatra and Java too...he's just closing the southern hook on the Molluccs (conquered Ambon today and tomorrow for sure Terakan (sp?) ) closing the door that leaves towards Darwin and northern OZ....

I've read all Canorebel and Nemo AARs.... Gosh...they talk about Autovictory conquering Hawaii, NZ, OZ, India...[X(][X(][X(][X(] I feel far from being ready in every single one of these major theatres... How am i supposed to stop the onslaught now that i've lost ALL my pacific fleet????

Oh, forgot to tell...Honk Kong fell today with no opposition [:o]

The PI merchant fleet and the HK one have been annihilated by his SC TFs between PI and Borneo...

Wow! That's close to a division worth of troops (a typical IJA division has about 325 squads, and 310 were destroyed here)... Japan does not have many such unrestricted divisions at game start. In scenario 2, they have about 10 division equivalent, and 5 fully formed divisions. Having one out of the game (for a while, he will be able to replace the losses eventually) is a very good thing. Even better, I believe, is the psychological aspect. Losing so many troops in one convoy will make your opponent a bit cautious, and this is good for you (gains time).

I would not call that a "small victory".

No ship respawning in scenario 2. Ships sunk stay sunk (of course enemy ships sunk are subject to FOW).

Alfred

You still get new US CVs if you lose some (Lex II, Sara II etc, which ofc should all be renamed just because you can).

Terje

Wrong! You get all of the Essex class CVs no matter how many or few CVs you lose.

Don't forget to use your FPs on your CLs and larger warships for Naval Search (day and night settings). You will want to train them up better here along with Recon and ASW skills.

yes, for me these days are of costant learning. This game is so BIG that you have the feeling that no matter how many manuals, threads, AARs you read, you'll be always a rookie!!

What i'm struggling right now is with the big picture. I feel weak in every single theatre...my character suggest me to be aggressive, but my limited experience with game mechanics suggests me to Sir Robin all the time.

Now i have to decide where to focus with my defences (considering that i've already lost 8 BBs and 4 major Cruisers, plus dozens of DDs)...where to dig in? Hawaii? Oz? NZ? CENTPAC? India? where to send reinforcements?
CENTPAC is completely empty...he could steamroll over every single island between PH and Suva...and considering he has 10/15 divisions at hand in this scenario...well, he could go wherever he wants. Plain and simple.

It's very weird that he hasn't invaded Malaya yet. No Kuantan, nor Khota Baru or Mersing. Nothing...he's not advancing in Burma either...he just advanced in southern DEI (Mollucs) but he's not using his dreaded divisions....[&:]

The KB is enrouted towards Truk...not going back to Japan...that makes me think he's hiding his transport TFs somewhere in the pacific ready to advance under the KB umbrella...but WHERE!?!?!?

In scenario 2, they have about 10 division equivalent, and 5 fully formed divisions. Having one out of the game (for a while, he will be able to replace the losses eventually) is a very good thing. Even better, I believe, is the psychological aspect. Losing so many troops in one convoy will make your opponent a bit cautious, and this is good for you (gains time).

I would not call that a "small victory".

Yes, probably that was a majory victory for a noob like me. gotta say it was pure luck...his BBs didn't do good and the weather was on my side covering my advance and my retreat!
Anyway, strategically, wasn't a victory. I got a TF that was leaving the theatre and i didn't stop his advance halting an invasion.
The loss of those BBs at PH are gonna hurt me much...i know...it's been a slaughter[:@]

My impression of Rader is he likes to try unorthodox offensives as his invasion of the Soviet Union clearly showed. My opinion is either a full scale invasion of Australia or Pearl Harbour. The fact that he stayed so many turns to completely gut Hawaii tells me he wants as little opposition from your Pacific Fleet as possible for either offensive. Perhaps little attention to Malaya and area on his end is to get you feeling comfortable there and tempt you to not withdraw LCU's to Australia? From my limited experience I don't think taking Sumatra and Java as early as possible is necessary for Japan. Japan really won't face a fuel crisis until mid 42 so he really has 6 months in my opinion to get his fuel bases eventually. A quick strike elsewhere will put him in a commanding position and he can backfill towards the fuel/oil bases at his leisure. The only other thing I can guess is a full blown invasion of Java from Ambon/Celebes taking it from East to West. Good luck, you'll learn more as the days unfold.
