Air Combat TF composition

Post by Tullius »

Day Time Surface Combat, near Oosthaven at 49,96, Range 23,000 Yards (1/18/1941)

Japanese Ships
CV Hiryu, Shell hits 2
CV Soryu, Shell hits 8, heavy fires
CV Zuikaku, Shell hits 1
DD Isokaze, Shell hits 2
DD Natsugumo, Shell hits 2, on fire
DD Inazuma, Shell hits 2
DD Shiokaze, Shell hits 2, on fire
DD Kuretake, Shell hits 1
DD Karukaya

Allied Ships
CL Danae, Shell hits 2
CL Durban, Shell hits 1
CL Mauritius, Shell hits 1
DD Vampire, Shell hits 3, heavy fires, heavy damage
DD Vendetta

The CV-TF consists of 3 CV and only 6 DD or 1 CV/2DD. This composition is way too weak and should never happen - at least so long as the Japanese have enough ships. According to the manual of the editor (page 57) the AI has to build a 3 CV group with 1 BB, 4 CA and 8 DD. These ships were all are available in the example.

As the KB has high strategic importance the AI should forced to build correct TF even when it means that one scripts has to be canceled. That is in my opinion long term much better than sending out weak TF which could be easily attacked.

There should be also included a routine which checks if enough escort ships are available and when then some ships should be simply called back. I have the feeling that the allocation of ships is very inefficient. Maybe the number of raids which are executed at the same time should be limited.

Unfortunately, as Andy Mac has said, in non-enhanced scenarios, AI IJN just do not have enough ships to do everything it needs to do and invariably end up sometimes with sub-optimal composition. 2 DD per CV is not bad composition for IJN, but lack of cruisers in TF of course hurts them in Surface Combat.

You could try to play Japan-enhanced scenarios, but those are of course not historical...

Then the IJn does too much. [;)] I would prefer when such raids are canceled. The real effect of such raids is very questionable. It sinks perhaps the one or other transporter. boms some ground units which are finally so or so lost but there is always the risk that one CV is damaged and every damaged CV hurts the IJN -esp. in the first weeks. For my taste the IJN relies to much on small TF which can be easily killed or rendered harmless.
