Data about German casualities 1941-1942

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

Data about German casualities 1941-1942

Post by wosung »

Considering the lively discussion about balancing & historical accuracy I thought I might collect some numbers about German casualities in the East, 1941-1942:

Mid-Sept. % personnel losses (benchmark June 1941) in % of the 142 East divisions:

over 25% losses (10% of divs)
20% losses (28% of divs)
over 12 % losses (21% of divs)
less than 12% losses (50% of divs)

German fighting power in second half of August 1941
Infantry divisions 60%
Fast divsions 50%

Casualities and reinforcements of the German East troops June 22, 1941 to March 31, 1942 (without AOK Norway)

KIA, WIA, MIA: 1.082.690
Sick: 567.461
Sum: 1.650.151

Ersatz & reconvalescents:814.600
Overall minus 835.551

Ersatz & reconvalescents / sum of casualites: KIA / WIA / MIA / sick
June 1941: 0 /95.058: 8.883 /29.474 / 2.701 / 54.000
July 1941: 65.000 / 181.988: 36.144 / 120.409 / 8.435 / 17.000
Aug. 1941: 110.000 / 289.813: 39.334 / 142.807 / 7.672 / [edit: see note]
Sept. 1941: 102.000 / 188.487: 27.492 / 99.635 / 4.560 /56.800

Nov. 1941: 55.000 / 157.143: 16.945 / 64.116 / 2.990 / 73.092
Dec. 1941: 99.000 / 168.000: 14.752 / 57.747 / 4.594 / 90.907
Jan. 1942: 43.800 / 214.900: 87.182 KIA, WIA, MIA / 127.718 sick
Febr. 1942: 124.100 / 173.100: 88.014 KIA, WIA, MIA / (edit: 85.086) sick
March 1942: 137.700 / 167.900: 105.042 KIA, WIA, MIA / 62.858 sick
[Edit,Note: The text says: "Interpolated sick leaves in Aug. and Oct. 1941: 100.000"
This probably rather means 100k in those 2 months together than 100k for each month, given the fact that sick leaves around those 2 months range from 17k to 73k per month.]

End of July 1941 casualites already were higher than in the campaign against France, because of heavy Russian resistance and and a declined German troop quality, due to the army expansion prior of Barbarossa.
