CV fighters sweeping enemy TFs without orders

Post by Hortlund »

I dont know if this has been reported, but I have seen this bug for a long time. CV fighter units with orders like
Escort; CAP 30 will launch sweeps over enemy TFs. It is as if the game checks for a naval strike, but the strike aircraft fail to launch for whatever reason, but the CAP still does an escort mission..that turns into a sweep instead.

This has happened alot in my current game against Nemo, where several coordinated fighter sweeps from several different CV TFs launched against enemy TFs.

After talking to Nemo, I have some more details. The strike groups on those carriers have nav-search and asw orders. The fighters have orders along the lines of Escort; Cap 40, rest 40. I get alot of messages along the lines of VF6s fails to link up with bombers, proceeds to target.

Nemo thinks that the code gets confused because the strike aircraft have naval search or asw-orders, and therefore dont launch against the enemy TFs, while the escort fighters do.

I've also had the same thing from land bases. Fighters switch from escort to sweep.

I think aircraft range may have something to do with it, fighters on cap with a range of 5 or 6 can easily run into enemy fighters on cap/escort from a near by enemy airfield within range.

In the original WITP, fighter groups tended to have just the one mission to perform.

Now by use of the 'patrol %s', a group can be performing several missions over the turn.

If you want to perform CAP only, I usually set the patrol %s and limit the Max Range to 2 or 3. Also generally use Escort as the default mission rather than sweep.
The use of sweep and a CAP % was what the original WITP required.
