Scenario chain
I checked the scenarios(ignoring the non-historical scenarios) trying to find if any of them could build a scenario chain.
In the North:
Elsenborn Ridge > We Fight and Die Here
Losheim Gap > Cracking the Goose Egg
In the South:
Race for Bastogne > Battered Bastards > Widening the Corridor > Bastogne Breakout
Nobody Comes Back > Advance to the Sure
Assault on the Sauer > Eddy’s Ripost
Anyone missed?
All together not many that can be connected and I would have preferred more chains like the long Bastogne row, but the last 3 of the Bastogne row look like they could have been made into one anyway instead of serving them piecemeal and so we would again end up with a pair, that maybe led to the decision to make at least one long row, bad choice for my taste.
Also I miss more scenarios that cover the German withdrawal that could have extended some of the other scenario chains.

BigDuke66...
I am complete with you on the fact that thet last three of the Bastogne row SHOULD have been made into one big scenario. In fact, I really feel by putting these in separate scenarios they have done a disservice to the engine.
I would like to see someone take all of the etabs for these and combine these scenarios into one grand scenario with a larger map of the environs (I saw a 24 by 29 km map last night which worked just fine) and have a "grand Bastogne" scenario.
Since Arjuna would surely be happy to provide us with the map, and the etabs exist, it shouldn't be hard to accomplish this, should it?

How does 'Battered Bastards' run on your machines? For me it is painfully slow because of unit density and map size. Granted, my rig is 5 years old but you are asking to basically double or triple the size of that scenario to cover all those German and US divisions that arrived around Bastogne after December 25th? Go for it, but I won't be playing it.

RE: Scenario chain
Is there any way someone can use the Battered Bastards map and put Bastogne scenarios together in one "Big Bastogne Bash"?
I really think this needs to be done.

RE: Scenario chain
Well. My machine is a year old.
I would be willing to deal with some lag to play this. And in a year or two, when this game is still selling (because I am sure the next release is 3-4 years off again), machines will be even better.
Am about to play "Battered Bastards" to test it out.
But I have played St. Lo. And yes, there is some "lag" when scrolling the screen, but I can deal with it.

RE: Scenario chain
I would say that IF a giant combined Bastogne scenario were done, the German player should get points for exiting units from the map to help in operations elsewhere and most points should be given for controlling towns along the main roads.
I guess I would add just a little to the east of the Battered Bastard map and run it from the 17th to the 29th or so.

RE: Scenario chain
If you guys search around this forum, you'll see that I had set up a standardized benchmarking methodology for HTTR/COTA/BFTB. In the discussion thread, various customers had posted system specs and their benchmark numbers. You might be able to extrapolate from that what type of performance you are going to get prior to building your monster scenario.

RE: Scenario chain
When I was playing St. Lo, I didn't mind "slower" play. The only thing that bothered me was the "laggy" scrolling. It wasn't smooth. It is the only scenario I have encountered that in and I am assuming it was because of the high unit count.
But I don't mind "slowness" of the clock as a possible issue at all.

RE: Scenario chain
Well how many units would it cover throwing those 3 together?
My score for the 600 test was 32 with:
-Windows 7
-Athlon Phenom II X4 955 BE (3,2Ghz)
-4GB G.Skill DDR-2 800 CL5
-Sapphire Toxic HD4890 1GB
-BFTB Patch to 4.1.235
But without setting affinity or priority as the taskmanager denied setting those, I wonder why.
Tested also with my resolution of 1920x1200 and hit again 32.

Scrolling is a different issue. You need to build the St Lo map cache in Map Maker. It only takes a few minutes.ORIGINAL: Marshal Villars

RE: Scenario chain
Oh. So, the scenario isn't quite done. Okay.
RE: Scenario chain
No, the scenario is done. It's just that the Cache files are much bigger (up to over 30 MB for a large map) than either the scenario (around 1 MB) or map files (up to 4 MB). So uploading the cache files would greatly increase the download time of the scenario files. It's just easier and quicker to build them after downloading the other files.

RE: Scenario chain
Pieter...first of thanks for the scenario
I would love it if the cache files were in there too.
I am not so much of a tinkerer and figuring out how to do those may be a bit beyond me at the moment with as busy as I am.
But it was still fun playing.

RE: Scenario chain
Run MapMaker. Open the map from the FILE menu (in the MAP subdirectory). From the map MENU, select GENERATE MAP DRAW CACHE.
That's all there is to it. (be patient as it can take a while)

RE: Scenario chain
Well, if the SPEED of the simulation is the only downside to making big scenarios, then where is the problem? (though I do believe in the larger scenarios it also appears that an issued order takes longer to "take"... that is in small scenarios when I place a defensive peremiter, it happens immediately...in larger ones, I can wait for 10-15 seconds before the new dimensions and facing seems to register.)
So what if the 3x button won't make a game day go by in 15 minutes?
The Bastogne scenarios should have been combined a long time ago then.
P.S. (and we need an "abstract" patrol system)

There are also other issues with longer scenarios: no replacement system and no withdrawal system. In some battles that would be a problem.
RE: Scenario chain
Huib is right, and there was a lot of shifting of divisions back and forth to/from this sector which can't be done with the current system. The closest we got to doing something like this was "Spearhead vs Das Reich" where we had to label it "semi historical" because of that very condition.ORIGINAL: Huib
