In Greece, use a Game Boy, go to jail

Post by Ross Moorhouse »

Picked this up from several sites now ..

All games banned in Greece..
In an incredible turn of events, the govt. of Greece has enacted a law which explicitly forbids all electronic games with "electronic mechanisms and software" from public and private places. The law is being taken very seriously, and affects every type of video game, from popular consoles and PC games, to games on cell phones. Even the standard games that come with Windows are considered illegal. Offenders caught playing video games will face fines of about $4,980 to $74,650 US. People have already been fined tens of thousands of dollars for playing or owning games.

The move was taken in part as a response to the prevalence of illegal gambling through the internet. The reaction by gamers in Greece and elswhere is mainly shock and disbelief

and you can sign a petition to help the Greek gamers on www.gameland.gr .

Hope so Mark, but in the doubt, I spread the voice around and asked to sign the online petition.
If true, they should be banned from the European Community...

That's one of the weirdest things I've heard since I read about Girolamo Savonarola banning playing cards in Florence! Sheesh!

Rule#1: Never make a law you can't enforce. It just makes you look inept and stupid.

I wonder what this ban on electronic games in Greece is supposed to accomplish. What's the point? Why not just ban stewed prunes instead.

Gambling games is the enemy, all other games are collateral damage victims.

Wonder how they would deal with prostitution?

I'm not so sure I agree that gambling games are the enemy. They are just games. Noone is forcing anyone to play them. Don't play them if you like your money. Its not like its a big secret that you'll lose; or is it actually possible that Goverment knows whats good for us?

Oh don't want ya to think I actually believe that gambling games are the "enemy", that is merely me reporting the viewpoint of the Greek Government.

No the trouble is to many Greeks possess to little grey matter where gambling is concerned (so this decision would make it seem at least).

Never realised Greeks were rampant gamblers.

I don't gamble at all, I don't buy lotrery tickets, nor do I buy scratch and win tickets.

Gambling is for suckers, so is Bingo.

I have zero interest in Casinos.
