I have managed to get WiTE running on latest Wine version on Ubuntu 10.04 by disabling game sounds (moving 'sounds' folder to 'nosound'). The game was barely playable due to massive amounts of "mouse click lag". Of course, this was with version 1.00 and on an X Server without hardware acceleration.

I look forward to test it further as soon as I get my new laptop.

Read this Wine directions

YOU basically have to set msadp32.acm to native only. That fixes the sound issue and the crashes. Also i don't have any mouse lag. Send me a DM on the forums here if you want some help figuring it out.
