DW: ROTS will not start

When I start up Distant Worlds with the new expansion, the game fails to start and I get a "Distant Worlds has stopped working" pop-up. I have updated my sound and video drivers. I have also installed .Net 4.0. I have attempted to run both as an administrator and not as an administrator. Any ideas on what I can do next?

Hi Paladin

Have you been starting the game from the Autorun menu?

Have you checked your Windows event log for any messages relating to this crash? (Control Panel > Admin tools > Event viewer)

Hi Paladin00,

Please run the game from the Game Menu "Play" link. If you try to run the exe directly, you will need to "Run as Administrator" or you will see this problem.

I get the same regardless of whether I use the auto run or the main exe.

I managed to get the game to work by doing a reinstall with the latest setup file for the original Distant Worlds.  I kind of get the feeling my previous installation didn't have the latest patch which may have caused the issues I got.

The Expansion should work on any previous version of Distant Worlds. If a reinstall was required, it could be that something was corrupted during the installation.

I fixed it now, thanks anyway.

I looked back about two pages and someone else had similar problems and it was due to out of date WMP. I had removed WMP since I use VlC and so a quick reinstall of WMP fixed it.

I am also having the same problem.

Game will not run using either autorun or quickstart links unless running as administrator.

If set to run as Admin it works fine

I completely uninstalled and tried DW 1.60 without the expansion and it runs as normal user fine. Reinstalled ROTS and it wont work except as an administrator.

Game is installed in c:\Games\Distant Worlds and normal account has full control so there should not be security issues.

This is a known issue and running as Administrator is the solution for the time being.
