NEWSFLASH; Efate captured!
A quick update; only posting the important stuff.
We captured Efate today, wiping out the NZ Base Force unit.
Our bombardment force silenced Noumea and destroyed dozens of ac on the ground.
An enemy destroyer was also shot up.
Intel: Andy has hired the ferryman and is air transporting in 3-4000 troops from Suva to Noumea each turn.
Ca 14k troops reported there now. I remember fine well how Allied air transportation stopped all Jap offensives in mid 43 from our last game.
- So we call it a day, leaving a small garrision at Efate.

RE: NEWSFLASH; Queen Mary sunk!
Forget the Queenie, now THIS is a NEWSFLASH:
So, are there any aces flying bombers? I am wondering, if transfering them to fighter training (since they are already trained bombers, so maybe to fighter-bomber unit?), and then duty, would be useful. AFAIK pilots with "kills" behave better in A2A combat. I have ACE with 8 kills, all made on Navy Babs.
Anyway, Burma seems stalled now. But since presence of Marines indicate, that Allies are short on troops there, try to find a weakly defended base, possibly in Kohima-Ledo sector, and get it by air assault. Two extra SNLF units should be enough then to clear whole chain.
As for New Caledonia:
First, island is looong, and ultimately undefendable. Land on north end, and then just unload extra forces in captured friendly port.
Second. How many forces could Andy transported to Fiji, before Line Islands were closed? Probably no more, than 2 Divisions. And weakening Fiji defences, when Line Islands are still blocked is exactly play into Japan hand. Plus air transport do not carry heavy equipment.
Third. Transports, which ferry troops to Noumea, do not ferry troops, and supplies in Burma. If you do not want to take New Caledonia, mark presence there long enough, to get advantage in Burma.

RE: NEWSFLASH; Queen Mary sunk!
I think there some new offensive options at New Caledonia or Fiji, which could now be exploited that the Line Island are still more or less safely in Japanese hands and the allied CV need some superglue. But the question would be the goal, i.e. occupation and later defense against Andy, or just doing damage and hurting allied LCU, airframes, and line of supply for a short time?
And also, how would Andy react to such further attacks? If I were Andy, I would hope to set a trap now to regain initiative rather than just waiting until his CV superiority becomes overwhelming... Or hope to see KB getting involved in large scale operations at NC, and jump the occasion and go for Line Islands once more?
Alternatively, Midway and Johnston might be tempting as they might draw out the USN, unless Andy just surrenders them and will overrun them on restarting major amphib ops with new CV? What could be gained from Midway and Johnston? Fortifying them perhaps not much? Recon of Pearl? That would be of great value to get a good timing of his future ops, and keep IJN initiative. Do Betties have the range to port-strike Pearl from Johnston? Even though it is suicidal?

RE: NEWSFLASH; Queen Mary sunk!
One question, PzB: what are your naval bombardment settings? I had very little luck with bombardments of Allied airfields, sitting behind CD units.

RE: NEWSFLASH; Queen Mary sunk!
Lol, didn't notice that Inq. Have to check my bomber units. The Helen II got a 20mm gun that can cause some serious damage.
My army bombers are piloted by a mix of vets and greenhorns. High turnaround rate [8|]
No more para reserves left in Burma, can squeeze out enough for another assault on Kalemyo but then 3 units need serious R&R time.
Don't think Burma is quite stalled yet, see below.
Even if Andy only have 2 divisions to deploy that's more than us.
After our deployments in Burma and Line Islands our entire offensive force was sent to Efate and our single division is not enough to
assault with. Definetly think we should look elsewhere. Think most of a NZ Bde is at Noumea as well and with ground defensive modifiers and forts
we need more than a division.
Nothing more than pre-emptive stalling can be achived from attacking Midway and Johnston Janh.
We can recon Hawaii from Line Islands and have been doing so, see below.
- The minus with Johnston Island is that enemy 4Es can reach it and nuke the place..so I can't place ac there [:'(]
I first recon and then send in bombardment group with spotters; used ranges from 6-12k against New Caledonia, the use of escorts is risky as shown today
but it increase firepower and the combined effect us usually enough to saturate airfields. Think there were 30-35 155mm CD guns at Noumea, several units - would
have been nasty to invade so we would have had to land at the dot base to the north and march south.
Enemy defenses in Kalemyo are squeaking; lack of supplies and heavy losses.
Today we moved a tank recon regiment onto the road between Kalemyo and Imphal.
- Andy will need to spend supplies and efforts to get it out.
Maybe this will be our chance?
Today we hit Nouema again, another dozen ac destroyed and 250 casualties.
A last 155mm round from the CD guns hit a destroyer and the magazine went up...bad luck!
- Enemy strength up to 15k troops and lots of engineers. So this was our last suppressing action.

Burma
Our long range seaplanes have the capacity to recon all of Hawaii from Palmyra and Fanning Islands.
In the process of repairing and upgrading, service rating of 4...

RE: NEWSFLASH; Queen Mary sunk!
Well, if he deploy most of available forces, that would leave Fiji open, in which case Japan should immediately land there. As a reminder, who currently have total control of seas, make heavy recon of Fiji now [8D]
Espiritu Santo was cakewalk, Efate did not had even enough supply. There was almost no troops at Noumea, so I do not think, that there was any serious preparations to defence New Caledonia.
Now Japan have chance to destroy several thousands of Allied troops. If not, in few months those exact troops will be assaulting one of Japan weakly defended bases, without much hope to repel them.
Check Koumac. If it is empty get there those Parachute Unit, which recently conquered "dot empire", moment before unloading assaulting division. Then, get there base force, and Tojo unit. Scrap everything in the area, forces from Efate, garrison of Rabaul, and Truk (with KB in the area any assault attempt in Rabaul area will be suicide). This is only quick trip. Koumac, Noumea, destroying troops, and immediate evacuation. I doubt he have even enough supply there.
PS. I do not see, how Allies can even seriously put Japan units at New Caledonia into danger. If things get rough, quick visit of KB, and evacuation of all forces should not be problem. Another cakewalk.

RE: NEWSFLASH; Queen Mary sunk!
I have checked Suva and Fiji Inq and there are built up bases with strong forces. The neighbour base to Suva is size 9, Fiji was one of Andy's "here but no longer" zones in the south, his anchor.
Belive me in this: New Caledonia was not defended heavily but I don't want to wear down the Combined Fleet suppressing Noumea and its CD guns; if we let this up it will soon field hundreds of ac.
So yes we could have made an effort but it's not worth the sacrifice at this point in time. I don't have the ground troops or fuel for it and don't want to get bogged down.
- As I warned; do not underestimate Andy's ability to reinforce by air. Even troops without heavy rifles fight hard behind 5 forts and rough terrain.
The Solomons is held not by its strong garrisons but by strong interlocking air bases and Combined Fleet support.
Heavy air strikes today; hundreds of Allied bombers try to smack our tank regiment but no ground assault?
No doubt Andy don't want to spend supplies and disrupt the 18th British division marching south.
- We hit the 18th in return today.
Our poor Army bombers have been set to strike for effect from 9k feet and losses have been mounting.
Need a break soon, one more all out effort is going in today!

RE: NEWSFLASH; Queen Mary sunk!
ORIGINAL: PzB
Nothing more than pre-emptive stalling can be achived from attacking Midway and Johnston Janh.
We can recon Hawaii from Line Islands and have been doing so, see below.
- The minus with Johnston Island is that enemy 4Es can reach it and nuke the place..so I can't place ac there [:'(]
Enemy defenses in Kalemyo are squeaking; lack of supplies and heavy losses.
...Maybe this will be our chance?
PzB, you are right of course, Line islands does the trick already. Following 4 AARs that are mostly in 43 starts to get confusing.
I completely agree, Midway and Johnston are of no significant value to Japan now, not even as speed-bumpers. Not sure Andy would even be tempted to send out the USN to defend them. If I were him, I would evacuate (or already had by now) them and come back later with a CV death star and a big bang.
Kalemyo is a chance, but it seems to eat quite a bit of your ground strength as well. Fortunately you can hopefully recover during close monsoon. If you could hurt the allied forces in Burma enough that you could pull out one or the other LCU, you might be able to strengthen your local reserves and counter-invasion forces in other theaters like Rabaul or Truk...
RE: NEWSFLASH; Queen Mary sunk!
Have you checked the hex sides for Kalemyo? I think that if he owns the hexsides contiguously from Imphal to Kalemyo he can still get supply in over land even with your unit there. I am just not sure how your tank unit entered that hex north of Kalemyo and how the hexside ownership sits. He can still have supply problems with the supply line open of course.
RE: NEWSFLASH; Queen Mary sunk!
I'm not 100% certain, but I thought that supply could enter a hex with enemy present but not pass through a hex with enemy present? Anybody know for certain?

That is my knowledge as well. When enemy unit is in the hex supplies can flow in, but not through.
RE: NEWSFLASH; Queen Mary sunk!
Yes, Andy still controll the hex side running from Impal to Kalemyo.
- I thought that ground units in the hex north of Kalemyo would slow the flow of supplies and thus forcing the enemy to repel our unit.
As this turn shows this was not correct; enemy troops were not low on supplies and a full sized british division (460 AV) was able to complete its march into Kalemyo
just in time for our shock attack.
Japanese adjusted assault: 1804
Allied adjusted defense: 2032
The combination of just in time reinforcements with supplies didn't leave us much chance.
Still we have attracted most Commonwealth forces in the region to combat and worn many of them down, thus depleting replacement pools.
- So now the Burma offensive that started as a defensive campaign has ended for 1943.
During the monsoon many units will be rested and redeployed to other theaters.
Will merge another tank division and leave an armored Corps in Burma.

Kalemyo is so close to Imphal that even through the jungle supplies do not need a road. They're just going around, I think.

RE: NEWSFLASH; Queen Mary sunk!
[EDITED]
It looks like supplies would be in long range (start with 100, then subtract the terrain value for each hex, when you get below 10 you are out of range).
Terrain costs from the manual (see second column):

Short range is trace value of 89 - 100 and is used 4 times per week.
Medium range is trace value 49 - 100 and is used 2 times per week.
Long range is trace value 10 - 100 and is used 1 time per week.

RE: NEWSFLASH; Queen Mary sunk!
Thx Witpqs, I really need to get into this stuff but it's not my cup of tea..would leave it to my logistics General [;)]
Not much happening over the last few turns; our recon unit that intercepted the enemy north of Kalemyo was destroyed when a full British Division and more attacked.
I placed 400 fighters on LRCAP over Kalemyo last turn but no more visitors. So the battle is ebbing out for now.
The Akagi has received 30 new A6M5s and work continues to upgrade KBs Kates and A6M2s.
I'm also hard at working bringing smaller LCUs together, bits and pieces from all over the empire needs to be released, transported and merged.
Cost 400 PP to release a small mech unit in China that was needed for the 2nd Armored Division.

RE: NEWSFLASH; Efate captured!
I just added up the butchers bill for Kalemyo. I dont know if it is the complete picture since I have just summed up all the combat reports you have posted.
Jap
Total infantry casualties: 50 057
Total Vehicles destroyed: 384
Total aircraft lost: 46 destroyed + 530 damaged
Allied
Total infantry casualties: 20 237

The era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays, is coming to a close.
In its place we are entering a period of consequences..

RE: NEWSFLASH; Efate captured!
The price of attacking!
Hard to imagine that we outnumbered the enemy 3-1 or more most of the time.
It was a close battle, those 18 AV from 2-1 odds was were everything hung in the balance.
Quiet last few turns, nothing to report really. Reorganizing in Burma and many other places.

RE: NEWSFLASH; Efate captured!
Been another few quiet turns; a midget equipped sub was sunk near San Francisco when it encountered a huge convoy.
The midget then hit a mine and sank...
Huge convoys and lots of ships reported at Perth; certainly Andy's main hub in the area - maybw worth a KB visit soon.
Otherwise we're upgraded to the new patch; Tojo still using Ha-35 engine (fortunately) and Judy's still have drop tanks.
In Burma Rangoon is now (finally) a size 9 airfield and can host unlimited number of air units.
Have upgraded some Tojo's and Oscars to the Tony interceptor. Hope to advance the introduction of the George from July to June and also the Frank from 01/44 to 12/43.
I've decided to disband the TBDs aboard the Junyo, the carrier only carriers 18 torpedoes - that's one torpedo bomber strike.
The Judy with its potent 500kg bomb is a better choice and we get a size 27 fighter unit and 26 SBD unit instead of the usual 19-19-17 configuration.
Our light carriers now have different air group compositions as well: One carriers 27 fighters while another carriers 27 Judys.
The escort carriers will mostly carry fighters.
