Official Scenario List

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

Official Scenario List

Post by Joel Billings »

Here's what we have planned for release. The first 5 are full map scenarios, the last 8 are partial map scenarios.

1941-45 Campaign – 22 June 1941 – 1945
1942-45 Campaign – 27 June 1942 – 1945
1943-45 Campaign – 4 July 1943 – 1945
1944-45 Campaign – 22 June 1944 – 1945
Operation Barbarossa – 22 June 1941 – 3 December 1941

Road to Minsk – 22 June 1941 – 10 July 1941
Road to Smolensk – 22 June 1941 – 7 August 1941
Road to Kiev – 22 June 1941 – 28 August 1941
Road to Leningrad – 22 June 1941 – 16 October 1941
Road to Moscow - 22 June 1941 – 16 October 1941
Typhoon – 25 September 1941 – 7 January 1942
Case Blue – 27 June 1942 – 13 November 1942
Velikie Luki ’42 Tutorial – 8 November 1942 – 9 January 1943

We also have three 1944 scenarios on the drawing board, but we can't say when these will be completed. The game will come with an editor, and we expect the community will create many additional scenarios after the game is released.

How about the Belorussian Operation in June 44?  I think that would be an excellent choice to validate the late war Soviet capabilities, and just a good balance for Soviet Fans to play.

That's one of the three scenarios in 44 we have on the drawing board. Trey, the designer of several of our scenarios and major contributor to the campaign scenarios has said he'd like to build at least three 1944 scenarios, one for the operations in the north, one for Bagration in the center, and one covering the operations in the south. Right now he's busy with other data work, but it's something he'd like to do when he has time.

Looks like an excellent menu of fine wargaming that will keep me busy for a long time to come.

I cannot wait!

Playing Germany from June 1944 onwards has to be for serious masochists [;)] especially with hindsight. From what I've seen, I think even the 1943 campaign is challenge enough.

It's quite different playing Soviets in 1941, at least you know IF you survive the initial German onslaught you have potentially good times ahead, the Germans in mid-late 1944 have precious little to look forward to.

Then again I have seen requests for Jan 1945 scenarios/campaigns on other forums lol.

1941-45 Campaign – 22 June 1942 – 1945
1942-45 Campaign – 27 June 1942 – 1945
1943-45 Campaign – 4 July 1943 – 1945
1944-45 Campaign – 22 June 1944 – 1945
Operation Barbarossa – 22 June 1941 – 3 December 1941

Just to confirm, I am assuming the first line is a typo and should be
1941-45 Campaign – 22 June 1941 – 1945

really looking forward to this, thanks to all for the effort and time.

Joel, the scenarios look great and with additional ones should fill out the list very well - one other one that would be great if at all possible to add would be Khakhov '42   May-June 42.  I assume if your adding Velikie Luki - hopefully this could be considered.  Thanks Len

My vote still goes for Operation Mars as a small scenario - winter, terrible terrain overwhelming numbers against a good German defence.   An exciting and short scenario and a close run failed Russian assault historically.   Maybe this will have to wait for post release.

Three 1944 scenarios to be done and one of them Bagration? Of the other two I'd pick either Yassy-Kishinev or Lvov. The last would be 1945: Vistula-Oder. My two cents.

The list looks promising - I'm glad the game will let you run campaigns covering the entire front but of a shorter duration. - one of the frustrations of WITP AE is that it didn't carry the same idea over from WITP.

Road to Moscow - 22 June 1941 – 16 October 1941
Typhoon – 25 September 1941 – 7 January 1942

I'm curious why Road to Moscow ends in Oct rather than continue through Jan consistent with Typhoon. Why stop at the Mozhaisk defense line, rather than be allowed to press on to the gates of Moscow at least through Nov and early Dec, and possibly longer to include the Soviet counteroffensive?

Road to Moscow is a hypothetical scenario, where 2Panzer Group is not diverted south, so you have to use 2 panzer to do an early Typhoon, to get Moscow in the clear weather. Typhoon is the historical version with 2Pz just returned from it's southern expedition.

Will one of the smaller scenarios be able to be used as a tutorial?

Velikie Luki is a "basic training" tutorial which we hope will have a step by step written guide to accompany it. Road to Minsk(3 Turns) allows the GE to practice their Blitzkrieg techniques. Road to Smolensk (10turns) allows both sides to practice crossing and defending Major Rivers. Operation Typhoon is a good pre-campaign experience as both players attack and defend, and players experience all four weather conditions.
