Operations Reports - What am I Missing?

Post by davbaker »

One of the biggest issues I've always had is:

Why did't my <Naval Strike, Airfield Strike, Port Strike, etc.> actually you know, Strike.

I know there are a multitude of factors that can affect this:

Weather, morale, leaders, escort, spotting etc, etc.

My problem is that while the ops reports will tell me of a single aircraft in the middle of nowhere is down for maintenance, or a single pilot has become an ace, I never seem to be able to determine why my 48 Wellingtons flying from Rangoon didnt hit Tavoy airfield when I asked them sooo nicely to do so.

Is it something that I'm missing in a report , or is it just a matter of looking through the extensive list of reasons in the manual why they may not have flown and guessing which one might have been the problem?

As a theater commander I surely would know why things I order don't happen.

What I would like to see:

A simple summary by base/TF that stated why a mission didn't proceed.

The turn routine would obviously be determining all of these, if it could be output to a report / txt file it would be nice.

e.g.

Rangoon: <unit name> - Naval Strike - Unable to locate target / no target in range
<unit name> - Airfield Strike - Failed morale & experience Check - Aircraft reduced
<unit name> - Airfield Strike - Expected CAP > Escorts - Strike cancelled

Canton: <unit name (B17's)> - Naval Strike - Airbase not large enough for offensive operations

TF73 - Enterprise - Target selected - Soryu - Unable to co-ordinate stike / locate target

etc.etc.

I know that some of these (weather, targets) do flash on the screen during a turn, but I can never find them in any summary.

Thoughts / Suggestions?

I've noticed the same thing. After looking and looking, I gave up and decided I can't find out why those bombers never reached their target... now if they don't make it, I just don't bother looking for the information. [:(]

Well naval strikes require that the target be detected. If the TF has not been detected then no strike. This is why naval search is necessary. Say set 20% naval search and select an arc that will cover the target area. Adjust as needed to increase the search area, or reduce the search distance. Also, CAP will effect the incoming strike, CAP > than escort, stop strike. Agree, that the checks are not all well known, you have guessed some of the best guesses.

Yep, it can be pretty darn difficult to determine why air missions did not execute. Since I cant find the reasons either, I run through the basics...weather, did I set the commands correctly, potential air superiority, supply, ready planes, attack on launching base. Then I try again. I agree it would be nice to see in the report failed missions..."1 IAF set mission naval attack - no targets spotted" or the like.

That is a hope, but consistant with the philosphy of keeping the 'guts ' secret, I am not optimistic this information will be made available.

This has been frustrating for me too. I moved a Zero unit near PM. I set it to fly sweeps over PM but never saw any kind of report of anything happening. I thought maybe they weren't flying a cap and decided to try strafing the AF. Still have no messages whatsoever. This has been going on for 2 weeks.

PM is extended range for A6M2's and unreachable for A6M3's.

I think you just got a great idea for an extension of the op report!

Wow I wonder if this is doable.

If its just code line more with a dummy sentence like Unit "x" is unable to do "Y" because of "z" then it could be interesting.
This is that it could clutter the report too much. I don´t want to read a 200 pager if this is the result. A seperate "failure report" maybe? [&:]

I understand we're never going to get the code given line by line, but how do we know if a lot of things are WAD when there is virtually no feedback for a lot of things.

It makes it very hard to learn / improve tactics.

I'm sure 90% of the fail reasons are basic things and no secret at all, just not very obvious for average player and downright mystical for the newb!
