Another thing to be noticed from your Wotje invasion is that while the transports were hit, there is no indication that any of the troops they carried were affected except for one pre-invasion action. This could be just a detail left out of the combat reports, or it could mean that damage to the supercargo was overlooked in the routine. You termed it a painful invasion, but the reports shown so far don't give any indication of it being so.

Question:

Results were funny but the important question for me is:

What the heck should i do now?

Ive lost WEEKS of family life preparing whole operation. Not only it is fully disclosed but I am a sitting duck.
What the hell am I about to do with this damn situation?

Should I compose my TFs by my best and invade again (probably with similiart results)?
Maybe just give up a game or what?

How much loses will look GOOD?

I am really puzzled here!

[:@]

I would say "Don't back up." Or, if your opponent feels the results of the invasion were highly skewed, then try this.

Back up to the turn of the invasion. Your opponent makes 1 change, then re-sends you the turn. Making 1 change is to (hopefully) change the randomization and yield different combat results. If it does - great - go with them. If not, stay with what you have.

I checked the TOE in the game and Oahu has only four 16-in guns if I read it right. Also some 14-inchers and railroad 8-inchers, and a pantload of 155s. From discusisons this week it seems as if the game's 16-inch TOE might be light. What was their rate of fire? If they were installed post-WWI, did they have SOTA loading gear? And how many rounds do you get out of a WWI-era barrel? (Not in the game of course.) You left out a boatload of 12-inchers, and a dozen 9.2-inchers..., whereas in your Wotje example the largest defending guns are 5.9", with some 4.7" backup.

I also notice, in looking at my Wotje data, that AKs in the game while under CD fire seem to always be at either 12,000 yds, or 1000 yds, making me think that range is window-dressing in the algorithm. Maybe. I think range ought to be hugely important in target selection, and especially hit rate, followed by target speed and maneuverability, but it might not be that complex as coded. The problem with "speed and manueverability" is that to deliver accurate fire from a ship, speed and manuever have to be curtailed considerably, while to unload the transports they have to stop. But "you're dead" on about there being problems in the targeting program and the shooting algorithm.

Oahu also had 12" mortars and 240mm howitzers capable of hitting targets at 12,000 yds, as well as 5" and 155mm guns at prepared positions.  The 16" guns were there to keep enemy BB's and CA's from getting too close; the 16" guns were added after navies went to that caliber for their most modern BB's.

I have read the first 4 or 5 pages of this thread closely and skimmed the rest...so sorry if this has been done and commented upon already; but I loaded up the first turn of scen 1 as IJN and, using the forces destined for Kuantan, formed an invasion TF similar to this PH invasion in composition. I then set Bataan as the destination. Bataan, of course, has some serious CD defenses. I saw similar results in that the escorts (PBs, SCs and some DDs...9 or 10 total) soaked up almost all of the fire. Only one xAKL was hit out of approx 60 transports. Did the same with scen 2 and saw the same thing. In each case troops got ashore easily and captured Bataan with the first shock attack.

Definitely apparent to me that the firing routines for CD guns are to target the escorts. Six PBs took multiple heavy caliber hits but remained afloat with 95-99 flt damage.

That tells me it's not someone's clever invasion preparation, it's a failing subroutine involving the coast defenses when confronted with large invasion forces. Has anyone tried testing this with Allied forces against a Japanese fortified base yet?

We have already turned back time.

OK then, my advice: Onward McDuff! Regardless of the fact that he now knows you're coming, you have big material and positional superiority.

You could also look at this angle. You said you felt getting ashore against those defenses with 99% was unrealistic, and I agree with that in spite of your masterful preparations. So, any additional (above the 1%) casualties that he can cause by virtue of knowing that you are coming will help to even out this particular short-coming of the game engine.

As JWE pointed out, you land on Oahu. Maybe you smash Oahu. The real challenge still lies ahead anyway.

Give 'em hell!

Sounds like a good idea. One thing I know, the devs have never stopped encouraging testing! This has been a truly interesting thread. Hopefully it will result in positive changes.

I wasn't trying to give a complete Oahu inventory. More commenting that the 16-in quantity in game is less than we had been discussing, when including the Ft. Weaver guns plus the Barber's Point guns and any others.

The Wotje guys were enough to sink 2 DDs, and cripple two cruisers and give a BB 15 sys damage. Not to mention what they did to the merchants. Part of this whole experience for me was due to me always having heard about Tarawa and Kwajalein in this campaign, and nothing really about the rest of the islands. Those two invasions were pretty easy CD-wise. So I was stunned at what a fortress Wotje was, and I kept feeding in resources thinking "This can't go on like this." But, it did. I didn't really beat the CD. When I peeked into the Japanese side, really more interested in seeing what the devs had put there than in maintaining any sort of game integrity, I found them with 44 supply remaining. That's when I ordered the final shock attacks that took out the base. If they'd have been well-supplied, I think I'd have needed many more BBs and a month of LBA softening up. It was a stunning surprice. Which, as I said somewhere, is one of my tests for an interesting AE game. It was a horrible, interesting surprise.

The problem with "speed and manueverability" is that to deliver accurate fire from a ship, speed and manuever have to be curtailed considerably, while to unload the transports they have to stop.

I was more speaking to the difficulty of CD in hitting maneuvering ships. No matter how well they're bore-sighted there's a time lag between shooting and inpact. A 20-knot DD is pretty agile.

I'm not sure that Japan historically had the lift capacity to invade PI, Java and Hawaii at the same time. 3 divisions and 9 regiments, plus supporting troops to Hawaii???? I could see that if he decided to not invade PI.

I thought I read in this thread that PI were already taken, and the invasion of Java was underway. Seems like an awful lot of amphibious operations in less than 2 months.

There was a post on the net which calculated they could do it calculated fuel ships , stowage and everything.

Agree there is some issue with CD guns they seem to mainly cause disruption now this is great where your forced to do a shock but when your not they can just dump the supply and rest ( or should we shock counterattack.. risky) , also the gunnery selection of small ships is still an issues ( Nells torpedoing small boats)  and 15" guns targetting PBs which would be left to the smaller guns.  Note some of the large guns could cover a lot of the island on 360 degree mounts

ORIGINAL: Grunt

Reading the thread, i just souht a funny thing : let's get rid of all the Malaya campaign and invade Singapore on day 1.
I did that on head to head, half an hour time, "just to see".

I basically send the whole fleet which was due to leave Samah, joined together in a mega fleet (100 ship, whith max escorts, and so on).

I sent the BBs (I sent them just next to Singapore hexe) as well and as it was a try, and the KB, to try to catch the Z force (maybe not necessary).

Results ? Singapore taken on the 8th of december 41 [8D]
Not much a real opponent could have done more, i think. not enough time to do anything, basically
Losses ? not much, 5 DMS, 1 DD, 2 APD, 2 PB, and 3 AK... A lot of damaged ones but they are now disbanded in Singapore's harbor

Was I lucky ? maybe.

On day one, the KB fought the Z Force, on day tw, i sent every plane on ground attack, to Singapore

I forgot to mention :
all the units i checked (the "big" rgts) had something like 0 to 3 disruption and fatigue before i launched the assault, with 0 preparation for Singapore (didn't check but i guess so)

(sorry for spelling mistakes, i'm not a native english and i type too fast)

No problem with the game engine. Not at all.

I'm not seeing a problem.  Jap commits it's entire national force against Singapore in a surprise attack.  Why doesn't that work?  It's PH only smaller.

In any case, it is just a trade-off and one that I think is entirely within the realm of options of the JAP player for day 1.  You potentially get the SRA secured about 1 month earlier, BUT you let the USN off the hook entirely.  That means the Allies counter-offensive can start almost one year earlier.  I don't see this as a winning strategy for the JAP player, but I guess we can watch an AAR play out and see how it works.  Be interesting to watch.  I think this is what AE is about, neh?
