Amphibious invasion of Pearl Harbor - results

Post by Bluebook »

Ok, this is going to be a somewhat long post because Im going to quote the combat report in relevant parts.

So I find myself defending Pearl Harbor against a Japanese invasion. According to my opponent, he has come with 350-something ships. The Pearl defences are unhurt, not a single air-bombing-run, not a single bombardment mission by his ships. My troops are in excellent condition and well supplied.

This is what happened:

Pretty much nothing. Almost all of his xAKs and xAKLs managed to drop off their troops unharmed. The escorting PBs took a beating though. I guess my question is "arent the PH defences supposed to cause more damage to an invasion fleet than that?" I massacred his PBs for sure, but what about his troops? Why did they manage to land all the Jap troops without getting hit by the coast defences?

When is this in game time?

I suspect that the PBs are getting the worst of it because they screen the ships unloading and 'trade' fire with shore batteries while unloading takes place.

The fact that many of his units have a "/1" after their name indicates that they're incompletely unloaded. Once his PBs sink (as pretty much all of them do next turn), I'd expect your CDs to mince the actual AKs , APs, DDs and supporting CLs in turn.

Interesting to follow-thanks for bringing us along.[8D]

ETA: I ask about the date in order to understand whether the IJN amphibious unloading bonus has expired already. If so, he's hosed-those troops, armor and heavy supporting equipment and supplies will be in the water soon.

Yeah, but....the sharp end of the stick is already ashore. Im looking at 2500 AV right now, and unless they are insanely disorganized, Pearl will fall to a shock attack tomorrow.

All I can say that German coastal guns could not stop the D-Day. You need planes, you need ships if you can destroy this big invasion fleet you are pretty much crippled Japan for some time.

Yeah, but on D-Day Im pretty sure there were at least some airattacks or naval bombardments before the beach assault.

Its January 1942, the sum total of USAAF bombers outside continental US is something like 80. Of these roughly 20 can do any serious damage to a CA or heavier.

Im not complaining though, its a wonderful game, I was just wondering why my shore defences failed to inflict any damage on the invading troops.

Gents,

It is my invasion.

Quick Notes:

a) Invasion TF was NOT DETECTED at ALL. NADA. It came from Shangri La. [8D]
b) We are talking about 350 ships used. In 3 invasion TFs plus some screening.
c) NOT even a SINGLE enemy plane bothered with it.

Seems like they are very confident.

[:D]

P.S.

It is a very complicated operation and it took me nearly 2 months to complete.

- Wake taken first then,
- Midway
- Johnston
-Kona
-Hilo (by land)
-Christmas
- Distraction at Lihue
-Lahaina (last turn)
- Pearl at least (the day after Lahaina was captured).

Remember also that most of those coastal guns were actually protecting the harbor (from naval bombardment and such). Oahu is a big island. Although some guns & defenses were spread about, the Japanese almost certainly could have gotten ashore somewhere (probably the north in Dec 1941-Jan 1942 (not saying the invasion as a whole would have necessarily worked). Oahu had to be defended by the fleet, airforce, and army - the coastal guns themselves weren't going to do much except protect Pearl Harbor itself.

Looks to me like it was just a matter of numbers, with the numerous PB's screening the relatively few AK's.  I also think there is something fishy in the reported 2500 AV number.  I count only 3 xAK's and 3 xAKL's in the 3 invasion TFs you have posted.  Unless there were many other TFs that also unloaded, you will likely face much, much less AV from any attack tomorrow.

there has to be way more ships than that. I count 3 divisions and 9 Inf Rgts/Bdes. Plus all the other ART and ENG units.

sniff, brings a tear to my eye - i shocked Pearl with 2700 a few turns ago with pretty much the same force - i lost 12k troops 600AV and inflicted 800 casualties and never even tickled the forts - and my invasion never took a hit either - it was loaded with PBs and an array of BBs/CAs/CLs and DDs

Masterfull! I am sure there was a good measure of luck but as they say, fortune favors the bold.
Probably small consolation to your opponent that you had to forgo other offensive activities. But if you pull this off the Pacific is yours to do with as you please. Keep us posted as to the next turn.

Yeah, I think the invasion force might become a self-sustaining POW camp before this is all over.  At least there's a good chance of it.  And the "all ashore" advantage for the Japs for the first few months can sure have ahistorical impact now and then.  It is a necessary evil, though.  But, if this does fail, and I think it just might, there are a lot of troops that won't be causing trouble elsewhere.  Let us know how it turns out.

Just a quick question for the US player (and I understand that as an ongoing game you might not want to answer). While this was happening:

- Wake
- Midway
- Johnston
- Kona
- Hilo (by land)
- Christmas
- Lihue

...where was your fleet? I mean you KNEW he was coming for Pearl, right?

Lexington was lost trying to intercept shipping around Wake together with Enterprise. This was back in turn 5 and I had spotted alot of small surface combat TFs north of Johnston Island while the KB was hammering Pearl for 3-4 straight days.

All the BBs at Pearl are sunk or highly damaged. Enterprise damaged. Saratoga is somewhere on the seven seas together with Yorktown and a handful of CAs, I really dont want to send them against the KB however, so they are not around Pearl right now.

As for the rest of the fleet...they have been busy around Pearl. One of my Helena-class CLs managed a mid-ocean intercept of a carrier TF and shot them up pretty bad...among other things. The remaining BBs are also somewhere on the seven seas, far away from Pearl right now though.

The Japs have 8 BBs and all their carriers around Pearl right now...together with most of the Jap Zero and Betty fleet. What do you think I should do?

Fish around the edges for his replenishment TF's. If you get to the AO's he will have to go home. he proably has them too close to the big carriers to hit, but you have to look. Send subs. Start searching everywhere. to find out where everything is. If his carriers are all at PEarl, your carriers should have free run elsewhere

Where were your subs?

If your opponent is so focused on PH, use all the subs at Manila to attack his invasion fleets. I know US torpedoes suck until '43, but they're better than nothing.

Not so; the US looked carefully at defending Oahu from amphibious landings; there are only two places a sane commander would try and land, on the Pearl Harbor/Honolulu coast or the SW coast of the island. Everywhere else were coral reefs and enormous waves, especially in January. The army placed several batteries of 155mm CD guns along the North Shore "just in case" but no one expected a serious landing there. Had any landing been tried on the SW/S shore of Oahu, they would have been facing guns far outranging anything a PB carried and more than capable of hitting any transports offshore, covering force or not.

What sort of vessels are PBs supposed to represent? What seems pretty unrealistic to me is that they can take that many hits from a range of heavy guns and not simply be blown out of the water - how would they screen the invading fleet beyond the first few hits from coastal guns? Why would the coastal batteries - presumably with radar direction etc - not spread their fire? Can they not see the rest at a range of 2000 yards!??

Seems rather too easy to shield a large number of ships - 300+ - behind a few pretty minor vessels, presuming there were a lot of transports to move that number of men?

Although some guns & defenses were spread about, the Japanese almost certainly could have gotten ashore somewhere (probably the north in Dec 1941-Jan 1942 (not saying the invasion as a whole would have necessarily worked).

Landing in the "Banzaii Pipeline" in the Winter? Lots of Luck, Chuck! The CD anti-invasion system is not working well. Nothing bigger than a 5" gun should be engaging PB's and such..., the rest should be blowing transports out of the water 10-20 miles out. As for Normandy, the nearest CD batteries were at Cap du Hogue East of the British sector. The stuff on the beaches was simply artillery on the coast..., zeroed in on the beaches, but of little threat to ships off the coast.

Where were your subs?

If your opponent is so focused on PH, use all the subs at Manila to attack his invasion fleets. I know US torpedoes suck until '43, but they're better than nothing.

Just to let You know:
PI Invaded long ago, I have started Java Invasion a few days before Pearl. Not so many invasions left to intercept [8D]
