Agree, definately an interesting direction to take the engine.

A pattern I've seen in this and the last three east-front mods I've read though is that the Soviet air force, which historically all but evaporated inside the first two weeks of the war, can actually go on the offensive on day 1 of the war.

The first two AARs I read both ended early when the German oil industry died beneath waves of red army bombers. This one looks headed the same way.

It must be remembered that Soviet forces were intended
to mount an offensive thrust into german held territory, with the air force providing support mainly against land targets.

Since it is planned to maneuver the red army behind the fortified positions behind the rivers Dvina and Dniepr, the VVS is free to carry out a strategic bombardment offensive against german refineries, synthetic fuel constructions, armament factories and supply dumps.

To the disadvantage, each piece of ordnance that is placed unto rear industrial sites is one less piece of ordnance that is falling onto the impending rush of panzer divisions.

The combination of experience (85+ vs 35), organization (soviets usually at 60% or more disruption), leadership (soviet officer stats), and quality of equipment (majority of fighters are I15 and I16 series, only a handful of relatively modern designs (Yak-1) in service and even fewer pilots, axis land unit device values are much greater than soviets everywhere from infantry squad firepower to tank engagement range {lack of radios for soviets)) is several times greater for the axis than the soviet forces.

It is a matter of defeating the fuel supplies of the panzer divisions before Moscow is taken (as perhaps was feasible in 1941)
though to the bewilderment of the Lwaffe, soviet air force units were ordered on ground support sorties in the ill-fated 1941 soviet offensive (yes soviets were attacking in 1941).

Those victories that are being spoken of, are perhaps the Commander Stormwolf unleashing a moderate dose of havoc against the previous axis challenger (destruction of entire Lwaffe fighter force on the ground at Helsinki in a single day was the final blow of the last campaign), Accomplished with the careful usage of WW1 era battleships and SB2 strike aircraft (similar to the Blenheim I or Ki-48 lilly). As per house rules, the soviets were prohibited any offensive operations on the first day, and the successes were achieved on Day 2 with the handful of assets available from the few remaining operational airfields.

The war does become very interesting and there are many twists in the story (war is further along than AAR) so reading should continue --> [8D]

In reality this is the final outcome of the majority of PBEM matches (sent by the developer of WIR mod vanilla)

Post by Commander Stormwolf »

JU 87B

Classification: Dive Bomber

Strengths:

- More accurate dive angle than IL-2
- Larger ordnance types than IL-2

Weaknesses:

- Greater vulnerability to fighters than IL-2
- Less resilience to ground fire than IL-2

Expected Use:

Will be used to support ground operations with tactical strikes against soviet armoured columns and fortified positions. Suffered losses in the Battle of Britain when operating without escorts, expected that 15-20% of Lwaffe fighter force will be dedicated to the protection of these craft (mainly BF-109F).

Suggested Tactics:

Evade escorting fighters and engage aircraft with extended bursts.
Rear gun is of low caliber so attacks from the rear can be carried out with limited consequences. Destruction of the JU-87 is to be given the highest priority.

HS 123

Classification: Dive Bomber

Strengths:

- Accurate Dive Angle
- Moderate construction

Weaknesses:

- Limited ordnance capacity
- No rear gunner

Expected Use:

Will be used in concert with JU-87 aircraft against Soviet armored columns and fortified positions.

Suggested Tactics:

Aircraft is vulnerable on the inbound leg with ordnance attached and is unprotected by a rear gunner. Utilize extended bursts to bring down the robust airframe. If ordnance is dumped, utilize vertical slashing attacks as the HS 123 may become maneuverable after ordnance is detached.

- Moderate Ordnance capacity

Weaknesses:

- Lack of armour or self-sealing fuel tanks
- Limited range

Expected Use:

Will be utilized in support of Romanian ground forces in the Crimean front.

Suggested Tactics:

Aircraft is well protected from the rear. Utilize frontal attacks and passes from below and the sides. Crew and fuel tanks are unprotected.

Operation Green is unleashed against axis oil installations in Romania, Finland and East Prussia. More than seventy soviet SB2 aircraft are lost due to the lack of fighter sweeps preceding the assault. As result the formation was force to abandon the designated attack plan due to heavy losses.

Significant damage was inflicted against Ploesti in Romania as the majority of axis fighter aircraft were assigned to offensive missions.

Targets in East Prussia were attacked un-opposed however significant losses were suffered from enemy ground fire.
The altitude of attack appears to be the major factor in the rate of loss to anti-aircraft artillery.

Soviet fighter units are dispatched to effect the reduction of the Finnish air force (who appears to have abbandoned the fabian aerial strategy utilized in the winter war). The enemy fighter force was drawn to a low altitude by I-16 rata model 29 aircraft from Tallinn where a 1:1 ratio of loss was observed. The second wave of aircraft from Narva comprising Yak-1 and Mig-1 fighters was more successful, destroying 60% of the current fighter strength of the Finnish air force.

Strikes against the Oil Refineries at Bucharest were less effective when the IL4 units dispatched were sent back by heavy fighter opposition. Significant discipline was observed in the Rumaninan squadrons who did not pursue the retreating bombers and instead fought off the second wave. The co-ordination of these strikes was poor as the fighter sweep force was delayed by weather and arrived after the bombing runs were completed. The Mig-3 fighters were subsequently butchered above the skies of Bucharest by a much smaller force of BF-109E fighters. This notion is disconcerting as the tactical effectiveness of the escorting fighter units against the dated E model appears to be lacking due to poor maneuverability and firepower of the aircraft as well as the inexperience of the pilots and officers.

Remnants of Finald's air force are struck on the ground.

Lwaffe raids are directed against forward airfields and soviet naval assets both in the North and the Black Sea. Some of the attackers are claimed by capable AA fire (the emulation of the bofors 40mm design before the war had begun should be commended).

Some skirmishes are fought above Romania with similar losses on both sides.

After an overnight bombardment by Soviet battleships, the aerodrome at helsinki is rendered unserviceable. The city is defended by a handful of Finnish aircraft that become airborne before Soviet aviation arrives. Soviet aircraft arrive in force destroying (on the ground) a full regiment of Lwaffe BF-109F reinforcements to Finland.

Skirmishes above Romania continue. It appears that soviet pilots are capable of dealing with the minor axis allies in obsolescent aircraft, however are outclassed by the BF-109F and in some cases the BF-109E.

A number of unescorted raids are carried out by the Lwaffe. These are intercepted with moderate success though several soviet aircraft (including the precious TB3) are destroyed on the ground.
