counter mod inspired buy 'guns of august'

Post by jack54 »

after seeing Agent S's new counters, the alpha-numerical symbols reminded me of 'Guns of August'.(another matrix game but set in WW1).

These counters follow a pattern from an alternate set used in 'Guns of August'.

They include 'strength' above 'movement' on the right side, with a 'national flag' above 'nato symbol' on the left. The yellow and white boxes are taken directly from the game. The command symbol is the same as carnifex's hq symbol. I used a skull symbol to represent understrength units that can take replacements.

Thanks again to
Agent S-- the ships and planes are his.
Carnifex-- HQ symbol

have fun, It's working fine so far; hope I didn't do something stupid.

revised 11/11/09 a few changes --made low supply icon larger, added missing white ap box to med bomber lvl 5 (how did I miss that?)

Also lightened area around flags for more contrast. Now named August2 so you can compare then delete un-wanted version
see post 8 for screenshot

Am enjoying this mod. I do find the contrast between the Soviet flag and counter colors so small, that it's quite hard to see the flag on the counter. I guess I can go into the color file somewhere and tweak that color.

thanks gw

glad you're enjoying "August" so far:
I too noticed the soviets (counter and flag) are quite close in color. I made the counter backround darker because I didn't want the russians looking pinkish; I'll look into lightening the background on the png. I also noticed with some darker counter backgrounds the nato division symbol is not as visable. The corp shows fine with the lighter highlight.

Question: can you deal with the blue halo around the planes? I like the way it stands out but I think I need to neaten it a little.

I have to adjust the low supply icon (lower left corner) it's to small.(you may not have even noticed it, lol).

The blue background on the plane icons is one of the things I really like. Stands out. I'll have to go back and take a look at the supply low icon, because I don't recall it.

thanks Chuck,

post 1 attachment is now the updated version called [UnitsSkin]august2---if you like the changes then delete [UnitsSkin]august.

Sorry it needed an update, I thought it was done when I posted, but two items I didn't notice slipped by;
Level 5 med bomber white AP box was missing [&:] and low supply icon was very small. fixed both and lightened area around the flag;I think it helps to see the Russians.

let me know if there's something wrong.Have fun.

Dear Jack,

I had problems using the August2 counters with Uxbridges ETO scenario. I had to switch back to his counters, which are very good, of course. Uxbridge and I both were surprised that this might occur. If I can help you diagnose the issue please let me know.

Thanks again,

Chuck

sorry You're having a problem, Chuck

Can you discribe the problem a little so I can keep an eye out?

I didn't do much except edit the png and csv file so I'm kind of suprised. (I play for a while with no incidents before I post.)

after your post I tried ETO several turns with no issues.I'll keep looking though. (The counters are a bit darker which is easy to fix.)

I hope I can help...

Here is the stuff I found with ETO 1.3b.
I cannot get a game started. Either scenario crashes to desktop before displaying a map. Using 1.3b, but getting nowhere. Did you get a chance to start with a 1.3b?

Last lines from ConsoleOut.Txt :
Loading new scenario done
loading_file_")data\scenarios\ETO_PBEM\minimap.png" [1]... OK
loading_file_")data\gfx\wallpaper_seabattle.png" [1]... OK
loading_file_")data\gfx\wallpaper_pause.png" [1]... OK
Wchodze w GameLoop
Ustawiam guziki akcji jednostek...
Ustawiam guziki akcji jednostek...
Recalculating FOW...
Setting callbacks...
No i to wszystko...

This is absolutely consistent.

I do not know what it was doing at that point. I can't imagine what is up, either.

Your new look is great.

sorry Chuck,

I'm not having any problem so far, both ETO's playing fine.(1.3b);

curious if others are having a problem then we can find something in common, If other counters work fine maybe august2 files loaded wrong or corrupted.

maybe a job for someone in the know, I don't know ConsoleOut stuff.

Please don't worry about it. Too many complications involved. Rest assured I will use your counters often

I had the same problem when using the Uxbridge scenario - crashes to desktop.

Works in the generic scenarios.

Would love to use as they look great.

thanks for the compliment Leeds,

sorry you're having the problem also; At least it works in vanilla scenarios.

I've had no problem so far and the curiosity is killing me.
