0 Naval Support in Melbourne & Sydney
Brisbane has 100 Naval Support.
Bunaberg & Townsville have 10 [X(]
Melbourne & Sydney 0?
Seems a bit strange to me considering they are the main Australian ports.
Brisbane was little more than a country town in the 1940's.
Their Static Defense type units have no inbuilt Naval.
Is this deliberate?

Many would say that is still the case today.[:)]
Regarding naval support - it does seem to me that yes, there should be some at Sydney and Melbourne, and less at Brisbane.

RE: 0 Naval Support in Melbourne & Sydney
With Sydney being a size-8 and Melbourne being a size 7 port, do they need any naval support at that size? Thought the whole idea of naval support was to improve the infrastructure at smaller ports.

Also helps speeds other things up (like repairs). However there's nothing to stop the player moving in more naval support-type units into these ports

This is why you have to evacuate some naval support out of the Phillipines. It will cost you some shipping but the AKLs are only worth 1 victory point the trade off is worth it I believe.

RE: 0 Naval Support in Melbourne & Sydney
Yes I agree that I could move some there, but most large ports have some Naval Support (usually fixed into the static CD units) at the start of the GC.
Melbourne was the HQ for the RAN in WWII.

World War II
During World War II, Melbourne's role as the chief supply point for US forces meant that available work increased. The port had to cope with the sudden influx of ships carrying troops or cargo requiring a quick turnaround. New kinds of mechanical cargo such as planes, tanks and artillery needed new forms of handling. The needs of war also brought about further renovations and the arrival of better handling devices such as the forklift
Sydney - Cockatoo Docks:

During World War II the dockyard was, for a time, the main ship repair base in the South Pacific. Early work during the war included the conversion of merchant ships for military service as armed merchant cruisers, supply and hospital ships. The Cunard liners Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, Aquitania and Mauretania were converted into troop ships by the dockyard during 1940. The work on Queen Mary was completed in only two weeks. Many other famous ships were worked on during the war years. Major repairs were completed to the US cruisers New Orleans, Portland, Chester and Chicago. In 1943 the Australian cruiser HMAS Hobart was torpedoed near Espiritu Santo. Severely damaged, the ship was repaired and modernised at Cockatoo Island between 1943 and 1945
An extra 100 Naval support will:
- more than double cargo & troop handling per ship for a lvl 7 port
- Provide 2 x more Port Repair Assist points for a stood-down ship which reduces repair time by about a 3rd.

The Sydney and Melbourne Base Forces are RAAF OTU (Operational Training Units??) with lots of Aviation Support and unsurprisingly no Naval Support squads.
Yep, it looks like there should be some sort of RAN Base Force there somewhere......
Cheers,
Reg.

RE: 0 Naval Support in Melbourne & Sydney
Might be a case for transferring some of those USN base forces you get over the months down under for use at a proper port rather than the smaller bases like Suva etc

RE: 0 Naval Support in Melbourne & Sydney
Wasn't there a post some time back from the devs that said that naval support in HQ units shouldn't have been there in the first place?
RE: 0 Naval Support in Melbourne & Sydney
Its there but it doesnt act as Naval support it does something different.
