Sec.8.9-Island & Atoll Stacking

Post by hbrsvl »

Hi-I have no problem with the ideas here. But I have this question:

I'm Allies, want to invade Tarawa. I believe this is a small atoll, no more than 6K troops. Can I/how can I/ determine the size of my assault force, so as to :
1. Speedily capture atoll.
2. Abide by stacking limits?

Or, am I allowed an assault force of whatever size, as long as I reduce size after capture?

Thanks, Hugh Browne

You can send in a big force if you want, but they'll suffer the consequences of overstacking as well, and those can be potentially devastating.

Historically, Tarawa was defended by about 5,000 Japs and attacked by about 20,000 US Marines. You can do that in AE as well.

Terminus-So you're saying I could attack Tarawa with, say, 2MarDiv(17-18K troops) plus a Combat Eng. Btn(1-2K troops) and be OK? HB

I think if youll read on you just need to get your assault forces off asap after island is secured and before you start landing significant seebee/ base forces and bring mucho supply.

Ohh don't forget your 18 aircraft carriers and 70 destroyers, plus all the other bits and bobs you
need for a 4 day atoll war.

But most likely fewer minesweepers. Thank you AE team for this

Tarawa is classed as a "small" island, so the stacking limit for Tarawa is 30,000, not 6,000.

The island sizes and stacking limits are:

Very Small: 6,000
Small: 30,000
Medium: 60,000
Large: Unlimited
Very Large: Unlimited

On the subject of atolls and islands, the information in the manual is not very clear. I didn't update the manual properly to account for the rules changes in this area. When time permits I will be writing up an errata for the manual that describes the rules properly.

In short, automatic shock attacks are determined by island size, not whether the island is an atoll or not ("atoll" is now a type of terrain, and is completely separate from island size).
