Reinforcements and Logistics

Post by OldCoot »

Reinforcements and Logistics Overview - 17 December 1941

The main problem is lack of shipping. That situation will be eased 27 days from now , but until then, its going to be tight.

Northern Pacific Command

Troops

There are, at present, four RCTs plus supporting troops stationed within the command. I do not see any immediate threats so further reinforcement is not deemed necessary at this time. The Northern Pacific Command headquarters is presently in Pearl Harbor. I know they'll be delighted to hear that they'll be able to rejoin their command at Dutch Harbor as soon as shipping becomes available.

Aircraft

VP-41 at Kodiak is providing long range recon for the command

24 B-18A bombers and 20 P-36A fighters are at Anchorage and are prepared to smash the KB should it be foolish enough to come within range.

Supplies and Fuel

Are at adequate levels. Three AKs and a TK are shuttling supplies and fuel from Seattle.

Central Pacific Command

Troops at Pearl Harbor

24th and 25th Infantry divisions are stationed on Oahu. The 40th Division, presently at San Francisco, will be sent over as soon as shipping permits. Some units on the island will be used as follows:

808th EAB and 34th Engr Regt - will improve airstrips and build fortifications at Midway, Johnston, Baker, and Palmyra.

Hq North Pacific will transfer to Dutch Harbor
Hq South Pacific will transfer to Noumea
3rd USMC Def Bn transfer to Johnston Island.

Aircraft at Pearl Harbor

Fighters - 114
Dive Bombers - 18
Level Bombers - 140
Patrol aircraft - 53

These aircraft will be upgraded when possible, but I don't plan to send any additional aircraft here. SWPAC and SOPAC have priority.

Supplies and Fuel

Supplies are very low, fuel is adequate. At present, TFs carrying 300,000 supplies and 300,000 fuel are on the way from San Francisco. When they arrive I will set up supply  and fuel shuttles to Midway, Baker, Johnston, and Palmyra. Supply TFs will wash, rinse, and repeat. Fuel Tfs will unload, return to WC and then load fuel for transport to southern climes.

Southern Pacific Command

This command will serve as a staging point for supplies and fuel bound for SWPAC and OZ/NZ. TFs transporting fuel and supplies from west coast ports will go to Pago Pago. Supply and fuel shuttles will be established between Pago Pago and Noumea, Canton, Lugarville and
Fuji. TFs will be formed to supply OZ/NZ as needed.

Troops and aircraft bound for SWPAC from west coast ports will proceed to Canton, and then to Cairns, Port Moresby, Gilli Gilli, or elsewhere as needed.
Patrol aircraft will operate from  Noumea, Lugarville and Canton Island.

Southwest Pacific Command

I feel that this command and the DEI will be where the action is during the next few months. Accordingly I'm going to build up forces here as quickly as possible. The focus will be on New Guinea in general and Port Moresby and Gilli Gilli in particular.

Troops at Port Moresby

Sparrow Force Bn
Gull Force Bn
NG Def Bde

These units will be reinforced by the 808th EAB enroute from SF, The 30th Australian Brigade arriving at Sydney in 27 days, and the  51st Aviation Regt arriving at SF in 27 days.

Troops at Gilli Gilli

116th USN Base Force enroute from Upolu
7th USMC Def Bn enroute from Upolu

I hope to put together enough PPs to reassign an aviation regt to GG, and to reassign a division to SWPAC. In 88 days the 7th Australian Div and the 101st Australian AT Regt assigned to SWPAC become available at Sydney

Aircraft - present and projected.

Present

No. 11 RAAF Sqdn,  6 x Catalina 1 stationed at PM
No. 20 RAAF Sqdn,  6 x Catalina 1 stationed at PM
93rd BS, 8 x B-17C, stationed at Darwin

Enroute

54th FG,39 x P-39D  enroute from SF
55th FG, 39 x P-40B  enroute from SF
VMF-221, 24 x F2A, enroute from SF

Projected

49th FG, P-40E x 72, assigned to SWPAC arrives at Seattle in 13 days.
8th FG, P-39D x 72, assigned to SWPAC, arrives in Seattle in 13 days.
35th FG, P-39D x 72, assigned  to SWPAC, arrives in SF in 27 days.

Once the fighters are in place, and the airstrips improved to level 4 or 5, I'll start bringing down the Heavy Bombardment groups.

Supplies and Fuel

Very low at the moment, but over 50K of each is on the way from the DEI. More supplies and fuel are enroute from India via Batavia, maybe I can bring them in via PM, otherwise, the long way 'round.

Dutch East Indies

Troops

Dutch have mustered 40,000 regular and about 100,000 colonial troops. There are two Indian and 2 Burmese brigades plus some base forces coming down from Rangoon. I intend to assign one of the Indian brigades plus a base unit at Palembang to delay Japanese capture of the oil fields there as long as possible. The other units will go to Java. Maybe I'll be able to bring down more troops from India.

Aircraft

What we have is what we've got. I'm going to bring the remaining B-17s from the PI down, and, maybe, something later on from  SWPAC

Hi,

I just saw this thread and as I'm just getting back into the game, I was hoping it would refresh my memory a bit [:)] I haven't played since 2005 or so. At any rate, I was hoping to see a discussion on game settings and any common mods (maps or stuff that you can use with stock?) that most people use. I'm sure you just wanted to keep it stock which is fine, but I'm struggling with settings right now.

Thanks,
Dan

Settings? Settings? Oh settings! Those are the things that you mess around with at the beginning of the game - right? I haven't a clue about which settings are better or worse. Here's what I've got:

Realism Options

Allied sub doctrine - ON
Japanese sub doctrine - ON
Fog of war - ON
Advanced weather effects - ON
Allied damage control - ON
Historical first turn - OFF
Player defined upgrades - OFF
Vary setup - OFF
December 7th surprise - OFF
Reinforcement allied - FIXED
Reinforcement Japanese - FIXED

Game Options

Combat reports - ON
Auto sub ops - OFF
TF move radius - OFF
Plane move radius - ON
Set all facilities to expand at start - OFF
Automatic upgrade for air groups - ON
Accept air and ground replacements - ON
Turn cycle - 1 (I'm going to change this to 2)
AI difficulty - historical

Preferences

I didn't touch any of these settings, so whatever is, is.

Supply Tfs are being loaded at Bombay and Karachi as fast as supplies and union work rules permit. For the time being, these TFs are being sent to Batavia via Padang. When they get to Batavia I'll decide if they go the PM route or the long way 'round.

Troops evacuated from Rangoon are now inching their way down  the western coast of Sumatra and will arrive at Batavia in 2-3 days

Malaya

The Japanese capture of Kuantan means that the Allied forces at Malacca now have Japs in front and to the right. There's a road between Kuantan and Malacca. It ain't much of a road, but it'll do for bicycles, so we can expect the Nips to show up shortly. Decision is made to withdraw ro Johare Bharu

Dutch East Indies

The great Batavian Bugout continues. Submarines arriving at Soerabaja for replenishment are being sent to patrol northern coast of Borneo -  maybe bang up a Japanese troop transport or two.

Philippines

Manila has been declared an open city and I expect the Japanese to occupy it shortly. Aircraft at Manila have been sent to Clark. Troops at Tuguearao are being pulled back to Clark

Port Moresby

The two birdie battalions have arrived from Darwin and are settling in. No 103 RAN Base Force from Brisbane will arrive in a day or two to provide badly needed support. PM is beginning to benefit from the Batavian Bugout as two ships with 2500 supplies arrived today.

Gilli Gilli

Transports bringing 116th Base force and 7th USMC Def Bn are just north of Wallis island. ETA at Gilli Gilli - 28 December

Pearl Harbor

SS Nautilus, S-27, and S-28 arrive from WC. They are replenished and dispatched to points west with orders to sink something.

San Francisco

TF 1147 embarking 40th Division. Destination Pearl Harbor.

2 day turns from now on.

Great thread. Interesting that the AI attacked Manila from the South.

My advice on naval matters. It's early, don't risk the CVs. That said, you can trade a few surface ships for delay in the form of smashed improperly escorted invasion task forces in the DEI and maybe the Solomons. Stay out of Betty range and prowl the Macassar Strait. Use Dutch search planes for recon as long as they hold the bases. Small actions to contest the initiative away from main IJN areas of effort are helpful against a human opponent. I don't know whether the AI will care.

Against a human opponent I'd be very concerned that you are leaving the NW coast of Australia undefended. Against the AI this may not be an issue.

With the troops you are assembling, you may be able to create Fortress Java and hold out longer than the historical time line. Air power may help with this if you have any spare USAAF squadrons (ha!).

Your LOC garrison dispositions seem quite sound.

Thanks for your input!

I was shocked when the AI attacked from the South. I think it might have because I had evacuated everybody but the fortress, and the AI did some bean counting and figured it had the numbers.

I think the AI is going to try to go the historical route (as am I) so I'm not too concerned about NW Australia. Besides, wouldn't Java have to be secured first?

What's a spare USAAF squadron? [&:]

Wish I hadn't evacuated Manila quite so soon. Doug warned me, but I wouldn't listen. After all, he's just a Field Marshall, and I'm the guy that owns the game. Who does he think he is?

Playing vs the AI I always tried to hold Naga. If you can hold it you can save Luzon. I in one game started bombing formosa by August of 42 from Clark with massive B-17 and B-24's but you have to hold Naga or the entire bottom comes unhinged and your pretty much done for. I alway hold Manila as the city is better for defense. True it isn't historical but then it is what I would call prudent if you plan to hold the PI. You would have to sacrifice a few AK's ramming supply in but I feel it is worth it.

Supply Tfs are being loaded at Bombay and Karachi as fast as supplies and union work rules permit. For the time being, these TFs are being sent to Batavia via Padang. When they get to Batavia I'll decide if they go the PM route or the long way 'round.

Malaya

Malaya forces have broken contact with the enemy, and  are withdrawing to Johore Bharu and Mersing.

Dutch East Indies

Units from Rangoon have arrived at Batavia. They are being assigned as follows:

Palembang
16th Indian Bde
No. 103 RN Base Force

Batavia
221 Group RAF
1st Burma Brigade
13th Indian Brigade

To Soerabaja
2nd Burma Brigade
No.106 RAF Base Force

The Japanese have captured Kuching which has a level 4 airfield. It is likely that they will soon capture Menado which has an airstrip that can be improved to level 6. Then they will likely go for Kendari which also has a strip that can be improved to level 6. Given these three bases, the Java Sea and surrounding waters become a Japanese lake, and any Allied ships on them are likely candidates to be included in the Co-Prosperity Sphere's Artificial Reef Program. Therefore, all warships will proceed by the most direct route to Cairns. Supply and Fuel Tfs will continue to use the Port Moresby route until MS Betty gets around to dinging one of them. After that, it's the long way 'round for everybody.

Philippines

What to do? What to do?  I goofed and let the Japanese get Manila before I was really ready for that to happen. I am pulling all northern Luzon forces, except those at Lingayen, back to Clark. If the Japs at Manila go for Clark, then I'll pull the troops at Lingayen back. If the Japanese sit tight in Manila, then I'll do the same at Lingayen.

Cairns - Port Moresby - Gilli Gilli

The Batavian Bugout is coming to fruitation. There are now 33 ships trying to unload fuel and supplies at Port Moresby. These ships aren't fully loaded; between them they have maybe 35000 supplies and 50,000 fuel. I'm going to let them stock PM with about 20,000 fuel and supplies, and send the rest to Gilli Gilli. Between Darwin and PM there's another 19 ships with some fuel and supplies. These will be diverted to Cairns. Besides all this, there are still some ships loading in the DEI, and even a few on the way from India.

Gilli Gilli

Tfs carrying troops slated to be the initial GG garrison are just east of the Santa Cruz Islands.

Luganville

Tfs bringing garrison is 7 hexes out.

Pearl Harbor

Convoys bringing  119,000 supplies and 112,000 fuel have arrived and are unloading.. Two more supply and fuel convoys will arrive in the next few days. When these arrive I will setup fuel and supply shuttles to Midway, Johnston, Paymyra, and Baker

The first two mine layer shuttles have arrived after depositing their goodies at Johnston and Palmyra. They are topped off and sent back out

San Francisco

You may recall that in my I,O,&P report for 18 December, I stated that the 40th Division was being loaded for transport to PH. If fact it was not. Before you jump off the handle and accuse me of forgetting to do something I said I was going to do, (as if that could happen!) You might consider whether I might be setting up a sly disinformation program designed to keep the AI off balance. In any case, the 40th is loading today.

1st Burma and 13th Indian Brigades are unloaded at Batavia
16th Indian Brigade and support have arrived at Palemband.
2nd Burma Brigade will arrive at Soerabaja tomorrow

Southwest Pacific Command

Ships arriving from the DEI and India are being unloaded at either PM, GG, or Cairns, and then sent to San Francisco

TFs transporting troops to Gilli Gilli  are just south of the Solomons. By the time they get to GG there should be nice pile of supplies and fuel waiting for them

Southern Pacific Command

TF 1014 transporting No. 114 RAF Base Force has arrived at Lugarville and is unloading

Central Pacific Command

Baker Island

4th USMC Def Bn has arrived and is unloading.
6 PTs formed into SCTF 1017

Pearl Harbor

TF 1135 transporting the 78th AA Regt, 65th AA Regt, and 56th Cst Arty has arrived and unloaded. I'm going to split this TF into 2 TFs; one will transport the 804th EAB to Johnston, and the other will take the 34th Engr Regt to Baker. Their job will be to first fortify bases, then improve airstrips.

Big fuel and supply TFs have arrived from SF, so I'll take this opportunity to set up shuttles to supply Midway, Johnston, Palmyra, and Baker. The supply shuttles consist of 2 AKs and an escort, and the fuel shuttles consist of a TK with escort.. These guys are all set to load, go to dest, unload, then come back to home port PH. In order to keep track of all this I make a list of the TFs concerned in my handy dandy spreadsheet. Here's what that looks like.

Image

Now,  anytime a two or three ship TF shows up at PH, I'll know it's probably one of these guys and I'll check the list to see where I should send it.

I have about 50 excess aviation support at PH, so I'm going to send 3 AVs to Cairns. To keep them company I'll throw in 3 ARs to repair damage, and an AE . I'm told that, during wartime, having ammunition around is a good thing

West Coast

BB West Virginia, CAs New Orleans and San Francisco, and CLs Raleigh and St. Louis arrive in SF for repair.

In six days, the 8th FG with 72 P-39D fighters, and the 49th FG with 72 P-40E fighters will arrive in Seattle. When they arrive, I'll have them fly down to SF, and then ship them to Cairns. They are already assigned to SWPAC so no pps needed.

I have six small capacity AKs at SF. I'm going to save two to transport the incoming FGs and use the other four to load VP-72 with 12 PBYs, 90th BS with 12 B-25C, 42nd BG with 50 B-26s and 12th BG with 34 B-18 Bolos. I'm just going to send these guys south and figure what to do with them later. They're not doing the war effort much good by hanging around the Top of The Mark sweet talking fly boy groupies.

Continue to send supplies and fuel to Batavia. Three TFs on the way and two more are loading.
In four days the 18th UK Division arrives at Karachi. Wonder if I should send these guys to the DEI?

Malaya - Singapore

Looks like the Nips slipped between Mersing and Johore Bharu. This, I understand, is not a good thing. I'm going to have to work on my withdrawal game. In Manila I bugged out too soon, and in Malaya I waited too long.

Dutch East Indies

2nd Burma Brigade has arrived and is disembarking
Have stopped pulling supplies out of the DEI

Southwest Pacific Command

Ships arriving from the DEI and India are being unloaded at either PM, GG, or Cairns, and then sent to San Francisco

TF 1067 departs PH transporting 804th EAB to Baker
TF 1082 departs PH  transporting 34th Engr Regt to Johnston
AS Otus and AS Canopus arrive safely from the Philippines

40th Division is still loading at SF. This the last unit I'm going to send to PH for awhile. With the arrival of the 40th, PH will have three full divisions plus supporting units. I don't see the Japanese taking that on anytime soon. I need every ship I can get my hands on to transport units to SWPAC and the LOC.
