Betty's wont sorty...

Post by aphrochine »

42A Campaign, Japan.

I've built up Guadalcanal, since I dont think I have a hope of Noumea. I've sent out subs to detect enemy shipping, and have plenty of detections so far. I've been there fully with HQ, tons of supplyes level 4+ airfield, plenty of ground support, and protection. The bombers simply wont sorty. In the month that I've had GC up and running, only 1 strike against luganville, resulting in minor damage.

Thoughts on what I might be doing wrong??

You need Mavises or Emilys to find the ships. Subs are very poor at that for air strike purposes.

Bombers wont attack a naval target that has CAP over it unless you have enough escorts to keep that CAP busy. I suspect that your problem. TFs can sail with impunity within Betty range if they have a CAP and are outside the Zeros range. WitP has always been that way.

There's also the "Doh" mistake of having your maximum range set lower than the distance to the prospective targets.  (At least that's the most common reason my bombers won't sortie except flat out not seeing ships at extreme range).

One other possibility - are you getting some sort of "can't find the target" warning?  At long range the odds of the bombers not making contact are greater so you may sortie to take ops losses and fatigue but come up with nothing but empty ocean.

Air leaders with good ratings, esp agression and leadership, hear that one a lot and seems to really help.

I have had Betty's sit for 30-60 days and do nothing then sortie and sink a BB or TK's unexpectedly when there was no CAP. Those were the good days, bad days they sortie at anything and all get shot up with no results.

Yeah, one of my opponents loves to move ships in range with F4U's on CAP.

I have often the same trouble.
Many Betty is a base (airfield = 4 at least), naval search = 30%, they manage to spot ennemy ships (civil ships) and they don't take off.[:@]

Sometimes, they take off IF the ships are warships or IF the target is not far away (5 or 6 hex) but rarely beyond.

I have large positive airbal and sometimes Zéro for escort but there are nearly no ennemy fighter.

The officer have agression factor at leat of 60.

... i will lose the war

Thanks for the tips/info. My opponent says he's not giving many targets (we share some info to help us learn the game mo'betta). Despite that, I have stationed subs in the area with search craft an they routinely (once or twice every other week) detect TFs, but do not sortie.

GC now has AirHQ, 40k supplies, Level 5 (within the next 2 or 3 days) airfield, all units set to search 20%. I have Emilies on 100% search also stationed.

Guess I've done all I can do...just wait for the dice to fall my way. /shrug

No, but then I dont play to win or lose. I play for fun. It really was a fun game. 2 day turns. We played for over a year and a half.

I have had a similar problem.
LAst Year I played a scenario where my Betty crews seemed to sorie everyday; even unescorted into Allied CAP. Now often they fled for home after lsing a few, but the next day they would try again...often at another target.
In my current PBEM with Floyd G he has sailed past Java several times with warships (Without carriers or any possible CAP) and been spotted but not struck. Even though at times I have had two or more Betty Datai there with high morale set to Naval Attack!
