Dates for Zero Bonus & US Torp Duds?
Amazing how moving can disrupt so many little aspects of your life; having a wife who likes to just shove stuff back in corners of shelves and stuff helps too . . . . [:@]
Hopefully I'll find my massive ringbinder copy of the WiTP manual before AE comes out, but until then: what are the dates for (1) end of Zero bonus conclusion and (2) end of Allied torpedo dud (using "Allied sub doctrine").
It _is_ only the U.S. torps that are duds right? Dutch, Brit, French don't suffer it right?
Actually, one last question. I've got this one PBY squadron. I think they started out in Phillippines and I rescued them from there. It is a US Navy unit, and I've reassigned it to Southwest Pac. I've got it in Port Moresby where there is a complete SWPAC HQ and plenty of supply (~35K) and there are also replacement planes in the pool. But for weeks, I have yet to get the option to allocate planes from the pool. Is there one other little requirement I'm forgetting about?
Since the unit is US Navy, can it only work if it is in a base with a US navy HQ (and 20K supply)?

RE: Dates for Zero Bonus & US Torp Duds?
Hi Anthropoid,
Well, I can't help you with the zero bonus, but in my games it's usually right around the time that the P-38s and Corsairs arrive that the "zero bonus" fades significantly! [8D]
As for the dud torps, they should start working properly around mid-1943, at least that's when they were fixed (more or less) historically, if I remember correctly.
As for the PBYs, that sounds strange. If it was an Aussie unit flying Catalina I's, well, they take forever to get replacements because production on them is so slow. But US Navy PBYs shouldn't have this problem (as long as they are at a base with adequate supplies).
Enjoy your game (till AE comes out, anyway!).

The Zero Bonus is a +5 Maneuverability bonus that goes down 1 point every month. So by May it should be gone.

Yes, May 1 is still celebrated by Allied Fanboys everywhere... these East Germans celebrated it under the watchful eye of the Soviet Fanboys in charge:ORIGINAL: Kadrin

And its far far worse than the Zero bonus. Fortunately neither exists in AE.

As to the PBY unit: my guess is that you have some broken airplanes stuck someplace in the PI that belong to the unit. The units in the PI start with more than the usual 12 a/c per squadron so if you have a fragment with some broken planes in the PI you won't be able to add any more planes than necessary to achieve a total (of all fragments) of 12.

Yep, that is probably it. Will look. Kinda annoying how broken planes don't always seem to show up with the little plane icon on the map.
Mid-1943 for the dud torpedoes!? Holy crap that was a year and a half into a ~4.5 year conflict! How did we win the war!? [&:]
One the torps disadvantge:
(1) only applies to U.S Navy subs, right? Even if it gets loaded at a British or Oz or Dutch base, eh?
(2) And what is the rate of duds? 20% 45% 65%??

MK 14s have a 90% (yes 90%[:@]) dud rate until June 43 when it goes down to 60%. In September 43 it goes down to 10%.
The torps on Brit, Dutch, and S-class subs work from the start.
I suggest laying mines with the others for the first few months.

Do any of you actually read the manual? It really does have some interesting information.
Note on Torpedo Duds
In January 1943, all torpedoes with a dud rate of greater than 49 have their dud rates reduced by
20. In September 1943, all torpedoes with an adjusted dud rate greater than 20 have their dud
rates lowered to 10. Allied torpedoes were notoriously inefficient in the early stages of the Pacific
War, and this rule reflects their slow but steady improvement over the years.
Yes, but . . . it also fails to provide clear information in many cases, provides plain false information in some instances, provides information in a dispersed difficult to find way in many cases, and doesn't explain itself on many matters.
Plus, not having it in hand makes it a difficult resource to use [;)] (although I suppose I could open the PDF . . .)

So I checked this out. The unit in question is VP-102/2 with 1 plane in it, Assigned to SWPAC, and based in Port Moresby (SWPAC Base) where I have 45238 supply, and two HQs (both assigned to SWPAC): SWPAC HQ and AUSI Corps HQ.
I'm pretty sure this VP102 unit must have originaly been USAFFE.
I do not seem to have any USAFFE air units left. Click on the show all land-based air, and restrict it to PAs, there are a lot of VP designated squadrons, but no VP102 or VP102/1. Also click on naval based, got two VPs crated up in AKs VP-9 and VP-72.
It seems the remainder of the squadron has been destroyed but the app is not recognizing it as such?

Looks like that fragment that you have left is an orphan. The parent was likely destroyed. Don't know for sure if the fragment will turn into the parent for airgroups, like LCU's do. But, since it's only a fragment, it can't receive replacements.

No, it won't turn into a parent... it is an orphan forever.ORIGINAL: USS America

EDIT: You can (usually) disband the unit into another unit with similar aircraft and pilot types.

RE: Dates for Zero Bonus & US Torp Duds?
Even with all the duds, I think submarine patrol is still the way to go early on. In my stock game it is 3/7/42 and, to date, 17 Japanese ships have been sunk by Mark 14 torpedoes. Add to this the number of ships hit but not sunk and, it seems to me, I am getting more bang for the buck than I would if I were to use the subs for minelaying or whatever.
RE: Dates for Zero Bonus & US Torp Duds?
Not sure if it was mentioned yet, but the torpedo dud rate only applies to the USN Fleet Boats, the shorter ranged S Series all have older more reliable torpedoes.

Yes, it figures there was enough bitching about the zero bonus to change that. So will 4E's still be the death of everything on the high seas?
