Engineering Boat and Shore Regiments

Post by Don Bowen »

Does anyone have good data on the OOB of these units? I am particularly interested in the allotment of LCVP and LCM(3) to each Boat Battalion and the combat potential of each Shore Battalion. Also the "longshoreman" strength.

You can probably find what you want here:
http://140.194.76.129/publications/eng-pamphlets/
Quite a bit of info there, if not poorly organized.

*** TRY THIS ONE ***
http://140.194.76.129/publications/eng-pamphlets/ep870-1-42/toc.htm
http://140.194.76.129/publications/eng-pamphlets/ep870-1-42/c-6-1.pdf

This book is available for about $75 - $100.
“Amphibian Engineer Operations”
“Engineers of the South Pacific 1941-45, Volume IV”
published by the Office of the Chief Engineer, US Army Corps, 1959.

A library that has it:
http://nla.gov.au/nla.cat-vn1635517

Might find something useful here:
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/academic/history/marshall/military/wwii/
or Neihorster's site:
http://niehorster.orbat.com/013_usa/__usa.htm
But probably that first link with all the pamphlets eventually yield an TOE.

Thanks, I've been through most of these without much luck. Lots of general statements but not the details I'm looking for.

Will keep looking...

Go to their website, general OOB listed.  For the details, many POC's listed for their upcoming reunion, who will likely be overjoyed to give them to you...

Thanks. Been all over that site too. The suggestion to contact them for possible help is a good one - I'll do that.

Most of the official publications speak in generalities, while most of the personal memoirs do not give any unit details. Until Jack Hays gets to Volume 10, it's a real bitch getting TOEs for engineering units. Even the quarter-a-page copy sites do not have the ESP units.

Don,

Have you looked in the Australian Histories?

I tried to find an OOB and for the Engineer Special Brigades "Each brigade was equipped to transport and land a division. This required a force of 7340 men, 540 LCMs and LCVPs, and 104 command and support boats"
then this might help:

War Department."Engineer Amphibian Units,"FM 101-10  Staff Officers' Field Manual. Organization, Technical and Logistical Data (10 October 1943), Chapter 1, Section X; 8 pages, tables  Price 1.00 {Item No.22080} [Including: Engineer Special Brigade: Diagram, Table of Organization No.5-510S (21 April 1943). It appears that you can order just the section you need for a Buck - one US dollar....

This one looks good, although the mail-only ordering and high shipping costs are underwonderful.

Thanks

Not a lot of detail

The "Amphibs", as they were known, were specially selected from
men with maritime or other relevant experience . Eventually three brigades
of "Amphibs", the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Engineer Special Brigades, served
in the Pacific . The establishment of a brigade was 360 officers, 7,000 men
and 550 landing craft ; each brigade included three Boat and Shore Regiments

There were also a lot of problems in Noumea as well, but i think that was just because the situation was fouled up beyond recognition rather than a labor strike... i think the dockworkers wouldn't work overtime, though. The US ended up using Marines, and many of the supplies were ruined due to rain, lack of warehouses, etc.

I think it happened just about everywhere, except maybe Germany & Russia.
