Doesn't that guy know that smoking is hazardous to his health ? Of course trying to shoot down Zeroes may have a tad risky also.

I think it's a C-54. My guess is that this is Boyington after being released from a POW camp.

Or rather an R4D being as these guys are Marines...

edit: make that an R5D being as it looks like a DC-4 rather than a DC-3

Doesn't look like Boyington to me.  I doubt anybody in that picture was recently released from a POW camp.  Everyone has meat on their bones.  Most of the Allied POWs held by Japan looked like the people at Buchenwald when they were released.

I agree that the plane in the background looks like an R5D/C-54.

Looks like the guy on the right in the foreground might have a side arm.  There is some kind of belt around his waist and it looks like there is some kind of weight on his right hip.

That's definitely Boyington - that might be Dick O'Kane in the center, but I'm not sure.  I think it's a pipe in his waistband.

I agree that it is Greg but also agree that he looks too healthy to have just gotten released...

Agreed. Definitely Boyington - prior to being a POW. Picture more than likely taken during the VMF-214 days.

A pipe tucked in his belt?
While the battles the British fight may differ in the widest possible ways, they invariably have two common characteristics – they are always fought uphill and always at the junction of two or more map sheets.
