I thought this was interesting. Google Earth is a wonderful thing.

Anybody know where it is, and what it was for?

Yep.

Stories of the past. "In early 1941, another interesting target was constructed south east of Socorro (Holloman AFB, near White Sands, NM). It was a scale model of the German battleship Bismark, and was made of dirt with wooden logs for the gun turrets. This was built to train pilots from the Royal Air Force in identifing the famous battleship at night. However, the Bismark was sunk in May 1941--- before the "adobe" Bismark saw much use. It is still there today."

It's a goverment cover up. That Battleship was really a part of the Philadelphia experiment and was transported there . I hope you have your tin foil hat on when looking at the picture !

I guess that settles the scuttled vs sunk debate. It was obviously scuttled in New Mexico. [:D]

It would be nice to see a pic of that from ground level. I've been looking but couldn't find anything.

Be nice to drive out to it and see it first hand.  Somehow, I don't think my activities coordinator will go for it.  She doesn't like to get too far from room service.

I have a vague recollection (I was 5) of seeing that from the road when my dad was stationed at White Sands.

What are the coordinates, please?

Coordinates are 33d 04' 38"N, 106d 10'59"W. It looks more like an earth berm. Kind of looks like vegatation is growing on it.

2 other "ship-like" things are at 32d 3'42"N, 106d 23'25"W. These are just north of a circular ring that could be the site of a nuclear test.

Another ring is located at 32d 29'06"N, 106d 22' 48"W

Tiornu they found you ! You should have used more tin foil in making your hat. And hopefully you also had your tin foil underwear on. Athough it can be a bit scratchy.
