RHS Test 13D: What Happened to Halsey's Carriers

Post by el cid again »

I have worked up and submitted a turn as Japan - so I can see both sides of this scenario. He found a problem with Saratoga and Yorktown - but I was able to generate a file without this issue.

I am going to attempt a bold plan - and also to avoid the horrible minefield at Lahaina until it is cleared. We are invading Malaya at Kuantan - and Luzon all along the Southern Arm on the first day - and Hawaii at Lanai, Hilo and Kona - to follow up immediately with Molokai - and then Lahaina after clearing the mines.

He replied at once - he believes that the war started by surprise and - with the exception of refueling one ship - he just left things as they start. So we can execute forthwith.

7 Dec 1941 (Hawaii) 8 Dec (Far East)

The night turn began with USN DD Litchfield detecting, attacking and twice hitting I-170 at Pearl Harbor. One hit causes a major oil leak. The other caused some flooding. This is remarkably like the historical attack - in which first blood went to a USN destroyer vs a Japanese (midget) submarine.

I-153 put torpedoes into Dutch DD (DMS) Kortner in the Java Sea not far from Soerabaja. Three Dutch DD counterattacked but missed.

I-14 sank AK Haleakala with 12 shell hits - many of them 5.5 inch - at Christmas Island. She apparently missed with torpedoes.

The day turn began with a Japanese strike on Hong Kong Harbor:

7 Dec 1941 AM Air Turn (Continued)

10 Kates and 5 Jakes from Saipan caused 26 casualties to the Guam Insular Force.

The CVL force - South of Johnston Island - attacked CA Indianapolis and three DMS NE of that island. 42 uncovered Kates (because the Me-109 fighters on the CVLs lacked the range to esourt) put 6 torpedoes and one bomb into the cruiser, one more torpedo into DMS Elliot, and missed two more DMS altogether.

27 Ki-36s and only 2 Kates at Shanghai put 19 bombs into RN heavy gunboat Peteral in the same location.

Kiddo Butai sent its Vals into the Pearl Harbor hex hunting ships not in port:

7 Dec AM Air Turn (Continued)

The CVE force - West of the Southern tip of Mindinao - was attacked by 3 B-17s out of Cagayan. 12 Me-109s on CAP. These managed to destroy one bomber, but the other two pressed home on CA Kinugasa - missing her.

2 Vildebeeste out of Singapore missed BB Nagato at Kuantan, Malaya. 1 was shot down by the 8 Zeros, 4 Petes and 1 Rufe flying CAP.

5 B-18s out of Pearl Harbor - its air bases as yet unhit - attacked Kiddo Butai. All were shot down by 66 Zeros and 6 Petes on CAP.

6 B-17s attacked and missed CA Ashigara and DD Shigure at Cagayan. [Shigure is the ship commanded by Takashi Hara - author of Japanese Destroyer Captain] 2 Petes on CAP achieved nothing. Neither did AAA.

The 2 Vildebeeste above were apparently premature over target: the rest of the force showed up next - for a potentially major strike on the ships landing at Kuantan by Singapore based air units. Apparently in spite of many runway hits Singapore airfields remain operational.

7 Dec PM Air Turn (Continued)

3 Hudsons flying all the way from Jolo missed DD Murakumo at Cagayan. The 2 Petes were still on CAP - but could not engage effectively.

3 Blenheims out of Singapore missed an AK at Kuantan.

9 Kates from the CVL force were unable to locate CA Indianapolis - no doubt because she was already sunk - near Johnston Island. She was the largest confirmed sinking of the day.
Later 49 more Kates ran in on 3 DMS - but were demoralized and tired - and scored only 1 torpedo hit on DMS Dorsey - and also 1 bomb hit each on Dorsey and DMS Hopkins. DMS Southard was missed - but was also already on fire.

Similarly, Ki-48s were unable to find RN gunboat Peteral at Shanghai - also no doubt because she was already sunk.

9 Kates - covered by 2 Me-109T fighters from the CVE Forced - failed to harm CL Boise at Zamboanga. 3 were shot down, 3 more damaged by the AA fire of the cruiser.

Kiddo Butai - which is due West of the Big Island - sent five Val strikes after ships in the Pearl Harbor Hex:

8 December 1941 PM Air Turn

22 Bettys out of the new base at Johnston Island attacked Hilo - but missed all targets. 1 lost, 1 damaged.

3 B-18s, escorted by 55 fighters of 3 types, tried to attack KB. 36 Zeros and 2 Petes on CAP. 20 Allied fighters lost, 2 Zeros lost and 2 damaged. The B-18s bugged out (smart).

3 Anson missed CL Kumano at Rabaul: 2 were damaged. [In RHSEOS family scenarios, and also BBO family scenarios, these cruisers are in their original form, with 15 six inch guns]

4 B-17s, 5 SBDs and 4 Kingfishers ran in on the transport group South of Oahu. For some reason this group was out of position and not covered by CAP for that reason. 2 APs hit by one bomb each and set on fire. 2 AKs missed entirely. 53 Allied casualties to troop cargo.

3 B-17s ran in on the transports at Appari - ran into 30 Zeros on CAP - and all the bombers were shot down.
4 more came in later and did better: 1 bomber and 1 Zero lost - 1 bomber and 2 Zeros damaged - no hits to any target.

16 Allied bombers of 2 types covered by 4 Whirraways ran in on the transports at Kuantan. They missed CL Kuma and AK Sasako Maru. 11 Zeros and 1 Pete on CAP. 4 bombers and 1 Whirraway lost.
3 Blenheims followed up. Only 5 Zeros and 1 Pete on CAP now. 2 bombers lost, 1 Zero damaged, no hits on any target. The Zeros flying LRCAP out of Soc Trang were very exhausted after this day of air combat.

6 Ansons out of Port Moresby missed CL Kinu and an APD at Rabaul. 9 Pete on CAP. 1 bomber damaged.

4 Kingfishers missed an AP at Davao. These came from Cebu.

3 ROCAF IL-4s and 9 SB-2s missed 2 AKs at Kiungshan, Hainan Island. They were part of a large TF loading an air support unit moving forward.

3 Blenheims missed the damaged and burning CL Kiso off Malaya. She apparently reacted away from the naval actions toward Saigon.

KB sent 18 Vals and 44 Kates into Lahaina against CA Minneapolis (1 torpedo hit) and DM Montgomery (4 bomb hits).
Then it sent 24 of each into Oahu to attack a DD and 4 DMS - 6 bomb hits on DMS Lamberton, 1 torpedo hit on DD Tucker - the other targets could not be found (because already sunk).
Next 18 more Vals put 13 bombs into 2 DMS at Oahu.
Then 40 Vals and 40 Kates - covered finally by 38 Zeros - put 20 bombs and 8 torpedos into ex BB Utah at Hilo - sinking her.
