Pick One Matrix WW2 Game

Post by Sarconix »

Hey folks,

With the Matrix holiday sale upon us, I am looking to pick up a WW2 strategy title on the (relatively) cheap. If you had to pick just one WW2-themed game from Matrix, which would it be? I am looking for something that is neither too simple (can't think of a good example), nor too complex (e.g. WITP). Theater and scale don't matter, and it can be land, sea, and / or air. There are just way too many WW2 titles here to research all of them in depth, so any comments are much appreciated!

And if this has already been covered recently, please let me know. I checked some recent posts in the General Discussion forum and didn't see what I was looking for.

Thanks!

Conquest of the Aegean from Panther Games. Hands down the best WWII title on offer.

For a good overview of what's in this game : check out MarkShot's mini-guide (pdf in zip)

SPWAW General's Edition
You know what they say, don't you? About how us MechWarriors are the modern knights, how warfare has become civilized now that we have to abide by conventions and rules of war. Don't believe it.

I would agree with Eddy. I was in the same boat as you when the sale started. I went with Conquest of the Aegean. It is an amazing game. Learning curve isn’t too bad. The only thing I did not like was no printed manual, but it is an easy flip between the game and the PDF manual during play. This game uses a system unlike anything I have ever seen. As a result, I can’t wait for Battles from the Bulge to be released. One of my favorite indicators of a great game is one that points you to related historical research. Before purchase I was pretty ignorant on this campaign. I’ve been doing some fun research as a result. Plus, the update has early North Africa. Enjoy this one!!!

WITP, take the plunge.

But either COTA or HTTR would be worth it as well.

Not the best game ever but very good and a bargain at regular price.

Its certainly cheap for the hours of enjoyment you receive.

Of course if he wants a cheap game......

Well, I mean "relatively cheap" and apparently $50 for WITP is a very good gaming value, if you put the time into it. For now though, I was thinking something more beer-and-pretzels. [:)]

I had not looked into COTA or HTTR at all, so it is interesting to see them mentioned by several of you all at once. Same goes for the Campaign Series. Do any of those have air or sea components, or is it all land-based? (looks like it from a quick perusal of the screenshots) Thanks, all!

Oh, then I've got another suggestion for you : Commander : Europe at War - the ultimate beer & pretzel strategical WWII ETO game. There's a demo out so you can have a look at it first.

+4, but I'd also vote for TOAW. Both good choices. COTA is a great game, but I'm not sure it's for everyone so I'd look closely at it before choosing. I prefer a more traditional game like TOAW (operational level) and Campaigns (tactical).
Signature? Maybe someday over the rainbow.

Hey folks,

Coming in during the final hours and minutes of the sale, I decided to get John Tiller's Campaign Series. I had not considered that one at all until you folks suggested it, so I will soon find out if you are right!

I also picked up Close Combat: Cross of Iron and Close Combat: Modern Tactics. I have never played a CC game before, but it sounds like a fun / fast system, and I hope I won't be disappointed with these choices.

I'll probably dig in to one or more of them this weekend. Thanks for the suggestions!
