I just started my first Japanese game.  A bit overwhelming with the choices to start HAHA.

So many fronts to take care of, plus the industry considerations.  Eeep!

Hara's book is outstanding. I highly recommend it.

You are the third one or so in this thread to recommend it - you guys torture me! The book is actually on my shelf right beside me. My wife has purchased it for me for xmas ("So, what do you want this year?" - "Hara" - "What???"). But it is wrapped in paper and of course I do not have the right (and the guts) to open the package before the 25th...

So, why play Japan? The challenge! Winning as Allies is easy - they know they will get better stuff and lots of it. Avoid Japanese Auto-Victory in the early phases and you will win sooner or later. Winning as Japan is almost impossible, but to stay in the fight as long as possible, delay defeat longer and inflict heavier losses than in history and pull nasty surprises even when on the defensive - that is a real challenge.

Well put, LST.  In my long standing PBEM (May 43) I ambushed my opponent's attempt to invade Tarawa and sank the Enterprise and Essex for the loss of some 40 or so planes from KB.  Haven't heard back from him in a couple of weeks. [:(]

It's successes like that that make playing the Japanese satisfying and fun.  Beating the "good guy" against the odds.

Well said Mike.  Each time I have worked to thump on Roper's forces, I have taken great pleasure in it.  It is mid-1944 and I still lead by 10,000 VP.  I'd say that is pretty good!

Just like turn 2 (or was it 3) of my current game when Isuzu sunk Houston in what was obviously a complete mismatch in favor of the Houston. Things like that make up for the days when you can't even seem to get a single bomber through the cap.

I've never yet played the Japanese, since I'm still learning the game from the Allied side.  The attraction to play as Japan for me is the production ballet that it requires.  I think that is one of the greatest challenges you can get from a computer game.  [8D]  One day.... [;)]
