1940 Tennessee vs Alabama

Post by Old Coach »

These pictures are from a game played between Tennessee and Alabama as part of my Best of 1940 College League. The lineups for both teams are mixture of players from about 1935 up through 1946. The teams are setup to reflect them as they were in around 1946 or so. The have strong defenses and Alabama with Harry Gilmer at QB is more of passing team while Tennessee is more of a running team. That's is true to the way the teams were at that time. I'm a University of Tennessee gradiate so I have orange blood in my veins but I also am an Alabama fan. I like them ALMOST as much as Tennessee. So playing this game was FUN!! An interesting thing here is that in 1938, UT beat Alabama 13-0. I don't have any stats from game. In 1946 UT beat Alabama 12-0 and I and Harry Gilmer completed 12 of 38 passes for about 170 yards in that game. In my game, Gilmer was 15 of 34 for 209 yards. I'd say that was close enough to say I got a realistic result.

Since I'm having to put several posts together on this thread to show all the pictures, I'm including part of the box score below.

A few more pictures and individual stats:
Individual Offense

Passing:
ALA -- GILMER 15-34, 209 YDS, 0 TD, 1 INT, 6.1YPA, 52.2R
TENN -- PROCTOR 1-6, 13 YDS, 0 TD, 0 INT, 2.2YPA, 39.6R
CAFEGO 4-7, 58 YDS, 0 TD, 0 INT, 8.3YPA, 84.2R

Receiving:
ALA -- MALONE 1-5 0 TD, BROWN 2-22 0 TD, HUTSON 7-61 0 TD, RANAGER 1-11 0 TD,
BRYANT 6-110 0 TD
TENN -- POWELL 1-13 0 TD, HUBBELL 4-58 0 TD,

Rushing:
ALA -- WILSON 1-5 0 TD, BROWN 5-18 0 TD, NELSON 10-31 0 TD, HOWELL 1-3 0 TD,
GILMER 9-1 0 TD
TENN -- STEPHENS 8-22 0 TD, CAFEGO 24-70 0 TD, COFFMAN 14-73 1 TD,
FOXX 3-58 1 TD, POWELL 1--1 0 TD,

As you can see from the stats above that Gilmer and Cafego were stars in the game. They both turned it over once; Gilmer an interception and Cafego a fumble. You'll notice that Foxx for UT has a great yards/carry. He's a wingback and he got his yards and his TD running the WB reverse. For the Tide, a gentleman by the name of Paul Bryant caught 6 passes for 110 yards. Perhaps you've heard of him.

Can't help it! One more set of pictures. That finally clears out the folder. I'm using the Coliseum Stadium with modifications to some of the BMP's. If this stadium could be modified to include a scoreboard where the columns are, it would be great. I block out the columns by coloring them with 255-0-255 transparent pink.
