The island does look like the Wasp.  The carrier in the middle is a Lexington class, which means it has to be the Saratoga.  I think Nik is right.

That F4F must be on CAP stand by, planes rarely sit on the deck with the wings unfolded.  My first thought was that it was an F4F-3, which didn't have folding wings, but they were out of front line fleet service by August 42.

I agree, it is rear viev of island (superstructure) USS Wasp CV-7. Armaments on photo: quads 1.1"/75 (28 mm) cannons and 20 mm/70 (0.79") Oerlikons. Wildcat? I think, probably it is F4F3 version. [:)]

OK dumb question. How do you know it's Aug 12 1942 from any way other than finding the photo online? Unless you guys are totally insane of course . . .

Isn't google a bit of a cheat?

Something about that picture says the IJN is going to get its ass kicked. Everything looks so well organized, competent and professional. The paint is perfect. The arrestor cables are perfect. The formation is perfect. The guns are all arrayed perfectly.

There had to be more than a few in the Japanese high command who understood they had made a serious error.

Also, when you look at the AAA suite, the ship is still carrying a number of 1.1" Pom-Poms (early war and phased out over time), but there are also a considerable number of 20mm Oerlikons on the ship (AAA increased over time). So you can infer that the pic is from early in the war, but after the ship had time for some of its AAA upgrades.

Though the Wasp didn't have long to live. She was sunk on Sept 15. The sinking was probably the most successful Japanese submarine attack of the war. A spread of 6 torpedoes from the I-19, 3 hit the Wasp, one the USS O'Brien, and a 5th the North Carolina. the North Carolina was hit at extreme range, she was on the other side of the formation.

In the 1950s, my father had a secretary who's brother was MIA and assumed dead. He was aboard the Wasp and his duty station was near where one of the torpedoes hit.
