"Guns, Germs and Steel", by Jared Diamond

It explains the reasons why Eurasian civilizations ended up "on top" while the natives of the Americas, Australia and Polynesia didn´t. He shows that this has nothing to do with race or culture, but instead (in a nutshell) with the availability of food crops and domesticable animal species, which our ancestors had or could introduce, and the natives of the Americas, Australia, Polynesia and much of Africa didn´t have (for the most part) or could not get from anywhere.
Well written, very informative, and a good antidote to racist pseudoscience - I really recommend it.

Bizarrely enough, that's the one I just picked off my stack of 'To be read' to read next! [X(]

Just the first book in Harry Turtledove's Settling Accounts series, Return Engagement. First book of his I've ever read, and I quite liked it.

Heidegger's Confrontation with Modernity: Technology, Politics, Art By Michael Zimmerman

Recommended if you're interested in the intellectual atmosphere in Germany in the 30s and 40s. Not an easy read but what I understand of it is pretty fascinating.

Actually: W.S. Churchill: "The Second World War". But only the one volume edition. (that´s enough, as it has 1000+ pages [X(])

Recommendations:
Ian Kerhaw: "Hitler"
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hitler-1936-194 ... 719&sr=1-3
(didn´t find a link for the complete edition)

G.L. Weinberg: "A World at Arms. A Global History of WWII".
http://www.amazon.co.uk/World-Arms-Glob ... 602&sr=8-2

(naturally i´m reading those books in german translation. [:D])

The Boer War by Thomas Pakenham.

Very interesting read on a war I knew little about. Makes me want to dig out my 3.5" floppies of "Age of Rifles" and have a go at the battle of Colenso.

I recently read The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors by James D. Hornfischer. It covers the battle off Samar. If you like books about the Pacific War, I recommend it.

Just finished "Generation Kill". Highly recommend it. Waiting for "With the old Breed on Peleliu" via Amazon in a few days.
History began July 4th, 1776. Anything before that was a mistake.

Just finished 'The Rules of the Game' by Andrew Gordon, midway through 'Absolute War' by Chris Bellamy and starting 'God's War' by Christopher Tyerman.

Can't settle to 1 non-fiction book at a time - need multiple books on the go to suit my ever-changing mood!
