WITP vs. UV

Post by SuluSea »

Uncommon Valor player here..

I love UV and have been thinking about taking the plunge as far as WITP goes.
I keep reading "micromanaging" and the like and have been wondering how much different WITP is than UV as far as managing land based units? other areas?
Since I only play against the AI will it be challenging enough to keep me looking forward to another day of gameplay?

Thanks!

Sulu, check through some of the older threads and you'll find a number devoted to UV vs. WitP.

But I'll chime in since I was a devoted UV player who switched to WitP 1.5 years ago.  UV is very helpful in preparing you for WitP - especially with game mechanics, familiarity with the critical role of logistics, and awareness that weird, unpredictable, maddening things happen with regularity and that's just part of the game.

WitP is of course vastly, vastly larger than UV.  The handling of ground units isn't that much different - it's still a matter of "getting their the firstest with the mostest and the mostest preparedest" and doing the work to keep your guys supplied.

The AI stinks and you probably won't be satisfied playing against it after you learn the game and beat up on the AI a few times.

I started with UV and got WitP when it came out.  I have never looked back.  Not sure I even have UV installed anymore.  I played WitP against the AI for over a year before going to PBEM.  That's how I learned the system.  WitP is an upgraded massive version of UV.  One scenario is basically UV within WitP.  Like I said earlier, I don't play UV anymore so I'm not sure how much it's been patched since 2004.  WitPs patches have made great gains on the original.  Just wait until AE comes out.  That'll be a massive improvement on WitP.

Yeah, there's a lot of micromanagement.  Much of that is because of the sheer size of everything.  There's no real way around it.

Micromanagement is you friend. Embrace it and nurture it. Soon, you will be able to crank out a PBEM turn in about 20 minutes even with micromanagement.

Roughly speaking, the detail level in WitP will be at least twice that of UV. You may want to break yourself in with WitP by playing one of the smaller scale scenarios. The AI should give a credible challenge though it'll never be as sneaky as a human.

Actually its a window at Pike's Place Market. The PB is looking at people happily munching on their English crumpets and wondering where her's is. [:)]

Sulu,

I have taken up UV while waiting for AE to arrive.

IMHO, its a far more enjoyable game within its limits.

BUT, once you try WITP and see the the size of the game anf the area that it covers you'll be a convert forever.

Playing the AI is less satisfying that in UV, but it's still competitive for longer than it is in UV. Its far from perfect though if you try an historical approach. If you play the AUI you can afford to be a little lax in your control of logistics, but it gives you a chance to learn before you consider a PBEM game (if at all)

Dont get too stuck on playing stock, you must download one of the many mods to receive the full value for your dollar!

I made the jump and am happy that I did.  A number of bugs that drove me crazy are gone, yes there are others.

UV can be frustrating as hell when your Bettys raid where escorts can't reach while in WITP you can limit their range so that this doesn't happen.  You can also limit the reaction range for your TFs.  Just 2 examples.

I never thought that doing an AAR would be so time consuming and difficult.
