Players Ratings

Post by ohcanada »

I've asked this before and will try again.

How do the players ratings relate to the players talents.

How and which ratings effect the receiver? The quarterback or running back??

Can you take players stats (passing yards, completions, interceptions, etc. and convert these into game ratings.

I ordered the game with disk and manual, but it lacks any real detail when it comes to the players ratings.

Any information would be appreciated!!

Ok...

Lets get the ball rolling.....

Quarterbacks:

Obviously pass ratings for strength and accuracy. Pocket Passer is straight forward and would be easy to figure out.

Would a player rated 50 be considered average??

Speed and agility to avoid getting sacked??

Intelligence and discipline would effect completion percentage and interceptions thrown??

Is it not uncommon to have your best league quarterbacks rated in the 90's in some of these categories??

If you download a copy of JDHalfracks editor Rick
all the hard work of working out an overall rating is already done

isn't the overall just for QBs at this time?  or did i miss something along the way? (which is very much possible!)

Nope, you missed something Hack
JD's editor covers all the positions as you can see from the graphic
its giving an overall For DB, WR, RB, LB & DL
and does the same for all positions

Hey Mykal - is there anyway to output this OVR rating?  Just checking, b/c the SQL/PHP that I'm working with runs a lot smoother with it on.

Hey Mykal,

I've been using this program and its very useful. Save a lot of time preparing players information and data. Also, it includes a very simple method of transferring players between teams, which will be great for trades that occur during a season.

I understand why you suggested this, but I think you're missing my point regarding the ratings, please let me explain.

1981 CFL SEASON:

Edmonton quarterback Warren Moon completed 62.7% of his passes, 3959 passing yards, 27 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Vince Ferragamo of Montreal completed 56.5% of his passes, 2182 yards, 4 touchdowns and 25 interceptions.

So, how do we translate these players stats into player ratings, while distinguishing each players season performance.

At first glance we see that Moon will obviously be a more accurate passer than Ferragamo. Not so much regarding pass completion percentage, but touchdown to interception ratio, which in game terms could come down to PA or INT (I think).

What I'm attempting to do, or create, is an excel program that takes raw numbers and spits out player game ratings.

I need to know which ratings effect what on the field and relate them to actual player statistics.

I've played and designed sports board/dice games that only use this method to determine results. Ratings like the ones used in Matrix are far to subjective to accurately produce true statistical results.....IMO. Unless you know how they all work together.

Right I'm with ya'

That would have to be down to david to answer you then,
as he created the formula for what represents what
there was some descussion in the forum about what people wanted extra
but its been a while since then and I cant remember what was agreed or implemented.

i know that overall ratings are given for all positions, but i thought the formula was for QB only. once again, i might have missed something. maybe JD will jump in and answer that.

what i really want to know is how the "auto" depth chart sets players. it doesn't seem to put the best players in the starting roles.

it would be sweet if david put out a manual on player ratings.

It cant possibly be only relevant for QB's Hack
Unless I have managed to dreft D-Linemen and O-Linemen who are also expert QB's
cos they have no QB's ability at all really to speak of, yet have High overall ratings
which does actually reflect there blocking abilities etc.

Yes I agree that a more specific breakdown of each rating, by position and rating, would be VERY helpful. For instance, a recommended max for each rating (for instance, as mentioned before, should a great running back, say along the lines of a Barry Sanders, have a 99 in agility, or a 92?) and what the corresponding results would be, perhaps a minimum as well. This would be extremely helpful.

Here's a link to the editor

As far as ratings I think much like beauty they are in the eye of the beholder. I may have a completely set of different ratings than another roster editor.

Oh man, I completely missed this thread a while back... I could have been of some assistance.

As of now, the ratings formula (although tricky) is actually editable by the user with the new version of the editor I am making. If you download the beta (available in the 3rd party programs as well) and open the InitialDatabase.DB (or whatever I called it... I can't remember ) you will see a table called OVERALL_Ratings. In that table, you can adjust the weightings of each Skill, as well as the effect of the Player's Weight and Height on certain things. It's not too user friendly yet, but I plan on making the weightings editable within the actual DB editor when all is said and done.
