OT: War in Georgia, what tank is this??
Hi there, this image is of some destroyed tanks in Georgia.
Am I the only one to recognise a T34 as the second tank in this image ????

It's a T-62. Look at the "bulge" in the middle of the gun barrel.

T34/85 would be my guess too. Wonder why they employ 50 year old tanks though when they have been part of the Soviet Union for 50 years and there were enough "modern" tanks built. But IIRC also in the conflict in Yugoslavia in the 90s there were still some T34 around. Even Austria has more modern tanks! [:D] So I guess it´s some successor of the T34.

What makes me wonder is the turret though. A T-62 has a very flat turret already while the one in Willie´s picture seems to have a pretty high one.

With the damage, lighting, and distance, it is hard to identify without seeing the track gear and rollers.
Imagine this with the barrel sleeve..Hatch in the right area, but this is only one version of many.(T 55 series).
The hull is too low for a T 34 in the first pic..Either T or I are correct.

The barrel sleeve is just past midpoint on the gun barrel. That ain't no T-55 I ever saw...

Looks like an upgunned (retrofitted with a cannon from a T62) IS2 to me.

I'm probably completely wrong, modern armoured vehicles are not my strong suit, but is the vehicle in fact a tank? I agree with castor that the turret looks high for a post-war Soviet tank design. Might this be an SP artillery piece, e.g. a 2S3 Akatsiya?

the SP artillery would have the turret further behind though and I think the tank in Willie´s pic has it in front.

I agree with Terminus. It's a T-62 with upgraded armour on the front of the turret. Here is a picture of one withdrawing from Afghanistan.

RE: OT: War in Georgia, what tank is this??
When I was in army back in -98 we trained inf close assault against tanks with moving T55:
It was the only working tank I saw in army during my entire service and its still used afaik (T72s went to scrap allready though). The rest I saw (all disabled) were ww2 captured russian stuff and som german stugs in the brigades "tank park". In the forest there was one post-ww2 UK tank too that had been reduced to scrap after been used for target practise.

The KV series had smaller road wheels, while the T-34 series had the large wheels.

Hi guys,
It is a T-72, probably an M model or an A model with a "Dolly Parton" armor upgrade. Although we can't visualize it, it probably has a Command and Control upgrade using GPS courtesy of the US.
Georgia only has T-55's and T-72's, and that ain't a T-55. Additionally, the sole armor battalion of the Georgian military is located in Gori -- which is ground zero for the latest battles.
Regards,
Feltan

Something sure popped-the-top on that front tank. Sabot round or airstrike?
