Japanese CVE Taiyo-no planes

Post by khyberbill »

I am playing Japan for the first time (CHS 155). There is CVE Taiyo in Sasebo without any planes. Does this ship get planes automatically at some point or do I transfer planes to the Taiyo?

No you don't get any, I transferred some. Why I don't know but somebody else here will.

Japanese CVEs don't come with aircraft (other than Hosho).  Some Japanese later CVLs don't get aircraft either.

I believe its meant to be used as a replinishment carrier. I personally just sent a group of land based zero's for the extra cap and use it that way.

If I expect KB to run into significant Allied carriers, I'll sometimes send them to trail KB (within a couple of hexes) to provide some extra decks in case a carrier in KB is damaged.

If you collect enough gold coins when you discover the secret hard code level, you can trade them in for some planes...

The Taiyo and other IJN CVEs were mostly used as aircraft ferrys. Aside from having no arrestor gear they were too slow and the flight deck was too short to launch a torpedo bomber with torpedo. Their usage as part of a mini-KB (KB meaning striking force) is a complete fantasy.

Kinda makes you wonder why they are even listed as CVEs at all then. Seems that the designation AK would be more accurate, if these ships truly couldn't land aircraft.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I think I will just use it for added CAP.
