Dayz of Sun - 1EyedJacks (J) vs GoodBoyLaddie(A) - A Closed AAR

Post by 1EyedJacks »

Hi all,

Sorry, but this is a closed AAR for Carl.

Well, Carl and I are at it again so please wish us luck as we try to get past December of 1941. This is our 4th try @ RHS EOS. And I'm running out of unique things to try on T0 <laughter>.

Due to the unfair embargo by the United States and the lack of honor respect shown the nation of Japan in our rightful quest to expand our sphere of influence, we will strike hard at the American holdings in the pacific and within the Philippines. The Grand plan is to build an outer perimeter in the Pacific enhanced with naval and air assets to hold back the Americans while Japanese forces aquire the Philipine Isles, the DEIs, China, Burma.

A multiple assault plan has been devised by Japanese High Command to throw the Americans out of the Pacific. Hawaii, Midway, Wake, and Johnston Isle are the key objectives with the intent of using the forward bases as part of a forward perimeter to carry the war to the shores of America and provide for unrestricted sub operations in the American shipping lanes. Other bases targeted for assaults include Guam and Tarawa.

Image
Operation Forge (Midway)
Operation Forge will take Midway Isle away from the Americans and provide the empire with an airbase and port facilities. The 6th “B” Division and the 3rd Yobieki Rgt will spearhead the assault on Midway. Engineer units and a Coastal Defense unit have also been assigned to prepare the captured base for air operations and to protect our newly acquired base from allied counter-attack.

Naval Assets
Transport TF101 (1AV#, 2DE, 2DD, 1CL, 4AK, 22AP) out of Nagoya, Japan
Transport TF100 (1AV#, 2PC, 4DD, 1CL, 1CA, 3AP, 8AK) out of Tokyo, Japan
Transport TF90 (1CL#, 2DD, 2MSW, 10AK, 11AP) out of Tokyo, Japan

INF IJA 6th (Amphib) “B” Div (currently on TF90)

Image
Operation Anvil (Hawaii)
Operation Anvil, the invasion of the Hawaiian Isles, initially is set to assault Kona, Hawaii, and Lahaina, Maui. While Kona is relatively undefended, Lahaina has fairly strong defenses. To aid the IJA 1st Guards TF103 will The KB has been assigned to attack all shipping in the port of Pearl Harbor and to destroy the airfields. KB will stick around for about 3 days to keep the airbase inoperable and sink every enemy ship I can in port. It is expected that forward air bases @ Johnston Isle and Midway Isle (when captured and repaired) will keep the airfields out of action after the initial attack on Pearl Harbor. Ground units from initial assaults at Midway, Johnston, and Wake will be used for the final assault at Pearl Harbor which is expected to take place in late January or early February of 1942.

Naval Assets
Transport TF84 (1CL, 1DM#, 2ML, 2AK) out of Kwajalein, Marshall Isles, destined for Kona, Hawaii
Transport TF102 (2CL, 2DD, 2DE, 2ML, 10AP, 16AK) out of Kwajalein, Marshall Isles, in route for Lahaina, Maui
Bombard TF103 (4BB 1CL, 11DD) out of Kwajalein, Marshall Isles in route for Lahaina, Maui
Transport TF8 (1CL, 2DD, 2PC, 11AK, 12AP) out of Kwajalein, Marshall Isles, in route for Lahaina, Maui

Operation Hammer (Wake)
Operation Hammer will take out the American Base @ Wake Isle with the IJN Maizuru 2nd SNFL supported by the IJN 1st Tank Co. A Construction unit has also been assigned to provide support and to rebuild/repair any damage to the airfield.

Naval Assets
Transport TF16 (1AV, 2CL, 2DD, 2DE, 1PC, 6AP, 4AK) out of Kwajalein, Marshall Isles, in route for Wake Island

Operation Temper (Johnston)
Operation Temper is an assault of Johnston Isle to provide a forward airbase for operations in the Hawaiian Isles. Currently I’m working a Zeke unit up from Takao to Johnston. LBs (Bettys and/or Nells from Takao will follow shortly as soon as I’ve destroyed every stinkin’ allied sub I can at Manilla. Air units will hop from Takao to Truk to Kwajalein, and then to Johnston or Midway. I might use this base to air-transfer supplies to bases in the Hawaiian isles also, depending on how things go.

Carl sent me the turn earlier 2day but with study-time for my course plus the Super bowl 2day it took me a while to get to the turn.

Anyway, things went fairly well in the Pacific. Johnston and Wake are under new management and I've got troops on the beach @ Lahaina & Kona. I expect my TFs to begin unloading troops @ Midway on December 9th with air support supplied by my CVLs in TF3.

Pearl Harbor base was turned into hamburger. Unfortunately I did not see a BB go down from the port attack. Below is a snipit from the Combat Report:

I was really hoping to see the Pennsylvania go down but - hey - watcha-gunna-do - right?

I see two TFs running past Johnston - one for sure has a CV in it - I just don't know for sure if Carl split his carriers. Anyway, some of his carrier planes visited my troop TF and beat the snot out of one of my CLs and an AP and an AK. I expect to lose all three ships...

I also pounded Manila's port - trying to take out as many subs as possible. Here's another snipit of the strikes @ Manila:

I already have the Yamato but she has 10 points SYS damage - one of those strange things El Cid did to try and get the naval production points to come out right... There are a bunch of ships with 99 SYS damage in some of my ports. It'll take a long-long time for those to come out of the repair docks... I also put a hold on 10 subs @ 33 points each. I'm hoping to push through some of my CVs without mucking up production too bad.

Good luck with the restart of this game. Hope everything works out well with the mod.

You should see some of the battlewagons go down if you stay around PH for a couple more days as you said, although it might be cost you quite some pilots. Nevertheless, going for PH will be very interesting. Have fun!
If you gained knowledge through the forum, why not putting it into the AE wiki?

Thanks for the luck Mistmatz. I nailed the California on the last turn. I'm losing pilots for my TBs and DBs tho - flak is a little rough over PH...

Still, I've smashed Carl's AB and the Port can't be in too fair of shape either. I'm pretty sure any ships @ PH have got to be close to Davey Jones - razor-thin close...

There's not too much to report as these are 1-day turns. Carl gave me a little heartache in Hawaii with his PTs - those damned things R tough. I think one of the problems with them is that they are combined - PT 75/76/77 and treated as one single ship instead of 3 ships. I think I slagged one of his PT boats with something like 122 shell hits - mostly from 5 inch guns. I'm not sure but I think what happens is that all of the torpedoes assigned for the 3-in-1 PT boats go after a single target... Anyway - I lost a DD and another took a torp but will limp back to Kwajalein.

In the PI region 'm running my CVE TF around the N end as it looks like Carl has a lot ofships fleeing into the S China Sea.

Nell/Betty LBs @ Takao R going after airfields @ Manila and Clark. Sallys R naval search/ship atk. LBs @ Saigon/Camrahn R N. Search/N. atk also.

Image

I've got TFs running to Japan to load troops for China and Hawaii. My repair points are being soaked up by all of the ships that El Sid gave me with so much dmg.

@ Hawaii I'll trash PH one more time and try to sink another BB or 3. Most of all tho - I want to really keep the airfield down. My CVL TF should be close enough to refuel/resupply and replace aircraft B4 they run back to Hawaii. When KB returns for fuel/supplies and planes I'll probably split it into two groups and run one over to DEI whil the other continues to support invasion operations in the Pacific.

Production is ramping up nicely. I am setting up lots of factories with 1-10 production of aircraft that I want to quickly deploy. My Zekes and Claudes have a zero bonus (from what I've read in RHS) so I want to use that to my advantage while I have it.

Troops R moving in Malaya, targets I set have fallen and I'll be pushing in the PI this turn.

Malaya and Borneo will soon see the sun rise over their lands in a proclimation of freedom from the opression of the UK, Dutch, and American governments. A new wave of prosperity will begin and our friends and allies will bask in the aftermath of a more prosperious future.

I had orders for KB to continue the Port/Air Base attacks @ PH but nothing flew 2day... I have plenty of sorties left - I wonder why they didn't fly?

Over by Tarawa Hibiki kicks some butt. I'm an avid Cuttlefish reader so this was really cool for me to watch.

It's nice to get a 2:1 kill ratio. Most of the Buffalos and P-40Es are from operations in the PI and Malaya. Carl has crappy pilots and I have the zero bonus...

Things are ramping up nicely for air production. Naval production points are building in the positive since I've halted some of my sub production but Merchie production is still a negative.

Why don't you move some of those ships in need of sys repair out of Japan and into ports around Korea and/or China and then bring them back in small groups as needed. That way your shipyard repair points can be used to bring down the sys damage on Yamato and not get used on ships with lower durability and thus prevent Yamato from being more sea worthy.

Hi Michael,

That's good advice and dove-tails what I was thinking for Yamato. In Hiroshima I've got 1 AK with 12 SYS dmg and then the Yamato with 10 SYS dmg. Repair yards generate 48 pts per turn @ Hiroshima and I show 96 points for that base as of December 11th. I can move an AR over and a Naval HQ to help out; those orders have been issued.

I'm in the process of setting up a few ports that I'll primarily use for large naval ships and other ports that will service merchie ships. Still, repair points go into a global pool and those were the points I was referring to as being tied up for the 4seeable future.

Well, December 10 was a pretty good day for Japan.

Carl has MSW ships removing the mines I laid @ Batavia. It's nice to give Carl back a little of what he normally does me <grin>.

Sub/ASW action was a little hit-and-miss this turn but I caught Carl's S-39 near Legaspi and pounded it with 4 DDs. They put 7 hits on the S-39 and a few of those hits looked pretty good. My RO-60 put 2 torps into the AK Alfoer leaving her on ire with heavy damage. The RO-67 caught the TK A. A. Penning and planted a torpedo into her. She was on fire with oil burning

Around the PI and Sulu Sea I ran about 70 LB over Manila base to beat up on the airbase. Additional LB pounded Clark also. I've been seeing a lot of casualties from hitting the Clark airbase. I'm going to try to gang up a bunch of LB shortly and hit Clark AB hard to see if I can really soak up some LCU losses. Carl is fighting back with his Fortresses going after my naval TFs @ 12k (and he's scoring a few hits - sad 2 say). My LB @ LEgaspi found a few cruisers @ Tarakan...

I'll share this snipit as I got a piece of Boise and her nasty-assed sister, the Marblehead.

Day Air attack on TF, near Tarakan [Borneo] at 34,60

Carl went after my CVE TF with air units out of Tarakan and Balikpapan but nothing scratched paint on my TF. Kates from this TF also dropped 4 turds on the AO Trinity

In the Pacific area Carl is running Boston LBs out of Palmyra @ Johnston and Kona. At PH I had a few port attacks against PH w/o fighter support (not a good thing). Carl tore up some of my TBs and DBs that way. Sometimes this game makes no sense in how air operations are conducted...
KB caught the CA San Francisco making a run and put 6 torpedoes into her flanks. They also caught the BB Arizona and kissed her with 5 torps and 15 bomb hits. The DD Bagley ate 2 torps, the AK Alchiba ate 3 torps, and the AK Antares ate a torp plus 8 bombs for lunch. The DD Mugford and the CL Detroit aite a few bombs from my Vals also.

48 repair points is not good even with HQ and AR supporting. If you really want that vessel soon I'd haul it into a bigger repair yard. I don't know the japanese setup in RHS but I assume there are some bases with more than 100 repair yards around. Those are the ones were you want your important ships being repaired quickly.

If you gained knowledge through the forum, why not putting it into the AE wiki?

Man - time has been flying in real life.

Yamato is still @ 10 dmg. Nothing else in the port requires repair. There are not many ports larger then here... Note 186 points have accumulated...

Carl has been running his B-17s out of here. I'm gunna go after his base a little and see if he runs his B-17s away.

Image

I'm running an ENG unit w/high support to Shanghai to hook up with an INF LCU so I can smack up Carl's Chinese units.

Image

Running a few AA units to the PI - Carl should just love these.

Image

I've got a turn still waiting to be processed. I'm gunna get that out and then get out a better detailed report 2morrow. Right now things R going well in the pacific, the PI, and Malaya. China is a mess but will get better when I can get my troop situation straigtened out.

Heavy Industry started out @ 13626-14771 on Dec 7 and is now 13645-132 and running a heavy negative. I don't want to invest in HI so I need to find things to shut down. I have sooooo many ships under production. I think I need to let that batch get out over the next 2 weeks and then demands will be reduced on HI - or @ least that's what I think... I'll look more into this soon.

Air Units
Currently I’m ramping up Zekes, Mikes, Liz Transports, Ju88s, Vals and Kates. It is my hope to replace other models such as Nates/Oscars/Claudes with front-line air units but the process will take a while… The Liz gives me the greatest range of Transports so I want to really beef up units in the Pacific to ease the demand on APs and AKs. Right now I have units scattered about the map that I’m trying to get to the different fronts I’ve established.

Shipping
A huge chunk of shipping will arrive in the Thai ports in about 4 days. I’ve got several large “batches” of ships that come out over the next 90 days but then things look like they will “normalize” and I should get a better feel for production requirements. I’ve already delayed most of my sub production with the intent of bringing back my fleet subs and halting construction on the ROs later in the year.

LCUs
I will receive a large chunk of LCUs in Thai bases shortly also. These will primarily be pushed into Burma. I’m raiding Japan to push INF Divisions to China, the PI, and the Pacific. I’m pulling a few support units from Manchuko and most of the air units. I’ll keep a lot of Recon near the Russian Front and of course dig in. I’ll push a few fighter units near the Russian front also to try and take down some of Carl’s recon units but they will be used more to help ramp up my training program.

Production
My production is great except for Heavy Industry and Merchant construction. I’m hoping that my HI will increase thru expansion as I remove the heavy Burdon of management from Carl of bases in Malaya, the PI, and the DEI.

Pacific Theatre
I have a good base established @ Lahaina and am tapping PH with LBs and Zeke escorts. Carl runs long range bombers from Palmyra to go after shipping, Johnston Isle, and Kona, but I’ve got additional units of Zekes coming up from Formosa and the airfields are ramping up nicely. LCUs from successful assaults @ Midway and Wake are either loading or in route to Hawaii. KB will provide air support in the region until I can get enough LBs and captured bases to keep Carl from getting any brain-damaged ideas.

PI
Units are in route to Legaspi and Aparri to push out from initial landings. Units from Legaspi have pushed up to Naga. I’ve been using my LBs in Formosa to help work over Carl’s troops in Hong Kong but they will soon be making runs to the PI again to soften up Carl’s troops in the PI.

China
I’m pushing units up from Tatung to capture Paotao. Additional units are headed to Kaifeng to drive up thru Chengchow and Honan towards Lanchow. A second thrust will come from Sinyang to Chengchow to avoid a costly river crossing.
Additional units plus air support are working to push Carl’s pain-in-the-butt Chinese LCUs that are scattered across the map near Suchow, Yangku, and Nangchang. Also, LCUs from Japan are moving to Shanghai and I’ll begin pushing from there to establish a solid front between Japanese and Chinese forces.

Malaya
Troops are pushing down to Georgetown from Alor Star. The 4th Tank Rgt+ 1st IG Div INF are just out of Victoria Point. Tavoy has been taken and units are pushing up to Ye and Moulmein.

Borneo
I’ve got my CVE and CVL TFs headed to Formosa. They will hook up with the Yamato to provide support for invasions in Borneo.

General thoughts
Production looks like it will totally suck in this Mod and is going to be FUBAR for some time. I have to find a balance of which ships to produce and which to halt – there are just too many ships vs the HI that I have to spend. For merchies, I’ll probably cut back on many of the AKs and push the APs.
Everything has to “Ramp up,” for air unit production which seems weird to me if Japan has been planning for possible war for some time. Most of my LCUs will goto Japan requiring me to spend political points plus find transportation to move them to fronts of my choice.

So I was beefing about production and lack of HI in my last post... Below you see that I've chopped 1178pts of merchie production:

Image

A few CVs are being accelerated. I'm particularly interested in the Shinano and the Taiho due to their armor.

Image

And this is my air production in the process of ramping up:

Image

Hong Kong fell 2day so I'm sending the IJA 19th Ind. Mixed Bde, the IJA 19th Eng Rgt, and the IJA 12th army HQ back to Canton to help push Carl's Chines units out.

Mine sweepers from San Fernando are off to clear Hong Kong's harbor.

I've switched my LB @ Formosa to Clarke in the PI.

KB has refueled and resupplied and is off to Hawaii again. I'm sending fuel to Johnston and Kwajalein from the homelands and getting ready to send troops back to the Pacific.

JAAF 23rd Kokusentai BF is unloading @ Shanghai (support for some of my infantry units).

The IJA 18th (Motor) "A" Div plus the IJA 25th Ind. Eng Rgt are in Georgetown and will have a go at pushing Carl's troops out and sending them down to Singapore.

HI is still low... I'm gunna have to reduce even more shipping. Naval points were dropping after the last adjustment for accelerating CVs so I added a few changes there to stop that. I'll C if the corrections were enough on the next turn.

How can there not be a turn waiting for me when I wake up - I mean - what's up w/that? Carl is gunna have 2 do better then this <laughter>.

Georgetown and Batan fell today - the might Empire expands!

In China I've sent the IJA 17th (Pack) "B" Div to Soochow from Shanghai and I've sent the IJA 4th (Draft) "B" Div to Hangchow after spending PP to change command over to CAA.

My IJA 1st Tank Rgt @ Peking is off to hex 53,33 to trash a Chinese LCU that has the audacity to be in the wrong place @ the wrong time. Time to start pushing those Chinese units over to India and then into the sea - Bwa-ha-ha-ha!

The IJA I4 Tank Rgt + 1 1G Div is @ Victoria Point and has received orders to take the base.

In the Pacific ships are moving here and there with troops, fuel, and supplies. Lahai just upgraded to a level 3 AF so I moved over another batch of LBs to pound PH with.

My TF3 w/CVEs is close to Formosa. Soon I will have the air support to push for assaults in northern Borneo.

I think I suprised Carl with my CAP @ Legaspi. I had a lotta fighters up to welcome his mini-bombing run. Have you ever noticed how hard it is to shoot down a B-14 Fortress?

I can soooo hardly wait for my Mikes to come on-line. They seem just the thing for CAP... I've replayed this scenerio 3 times with Carl and we've never gotten to the point where I could actually use the Mikes and Ju88s...

Any one else playing Japan in RHS experiencing HI problems? If so, are you doing something different to balance HI? It looks like in 2 days all of those ships, air units, and troops will be in Thailand - maybe that'll reduce the negative flow of HI... I guess I'll C.

I ran KB along the east side of Hawaii and tapped a few cruisers and a BB. KB is returning to Johnston for resupply.

LBs out of Lahaina are running naval/airfield missions. I've got enough LB and fighter support to keep PH down based on my initial Dec 7-9 attack.

Troops R landing @ Lahaina and Kona. I'll mop up the easy bases, build my air support, and then clear mines @ PH and assault the base with a couple of divisions plus support. I know what I want to do - it just takes a while to get my ducks in a row.

In the PI I'm pushing Carl back to Clarke/Manilla. I'll bomb the ever-living stuffing out of him and take his troops out after I've softened them up.

Jolo Island looks interesting. It has a level 3 airfield. I'm thinking of taking the isle and basing 150 Zekes to perform sweeps and escort service for LBs out of Saigon.

In China I'm in the process of pushing Carl's units back and establishing clear lines between Japanes/Chinese troops. I've pumped 3 divisions of infantry into China plus a pair of JAAF engineer units to help provide support for my infantry units. I plan to use lotsa LBs and fighter support to soften up the Chinese troops and start pushing a strong campaign into China.

Units have been identified for assaulting Borneo. I'm waiting for air support plus additional transports so I can move across the China sea and get my oil.

In Malaya Carl seems to be running his units to Singapore faster than I can follow. I'm guessing he'll make a stand closer to Singapore and try to provide air support. I'll push in bombers with Zeke support and pound Carl's airbase into swiss cheese. Then I'll go after his troops. Singapore has lotsa HI. I want HI - lotsa HI.

Borneo and Palymbang have to be my primary goals at this point as I need oil and HI. Hawaii is high on my list of 2ndary objectives as I really want to get a strong defensive ring up in the Pacific.

Carl is beefing about not producing enough air units. Unfortunately he is not any more specific than that... I've been so busy trying to ramp up my production and move troops about that any break I can get I'll take. Most of the LCUs go to Japan which means spending PP.
I'm leary of pulling too much out of Manchukeo with Russia active. I am pulling a few units but they are primarily engineer units and air units.

I was hoping that the ships/air units that were on the books 4 Thailand would ease my HI requirements when they finally deployed. They did ease the drain on HI somewhat - just not enough.

My subs are kicking serious butt in this game. For some reason the RO subs seem to miss more often than my fleet subs but overall, my sub units have to be pissing Carl off. I'm gunna move more subs near the ports with lotsa oil and see if I can nabb some of Carl's tankers.

Force Z must be somewhere near Borneo. Carl simply cannot resist using that group. And the Boise will be in the area too. I've got a basic package of recon units deployed but I'll be adding to those units as soon as I can bump my airfield ratings up a notch or two in the bases near Borneo that will support theatre opertations.

Real life has been hitting me hard with work, school, and family. I'll try to get some pics out within the next few days.

This will be my first go at a strong Japanese campaign in China. If there are any JFB experts in operations involving the China Theatre I am definately open for suggestions.

I hit PH with a port/airbase attack and took down the Nevada. That was pretty cool but I lost about 40 planes between the Kates and Vals.

I swapped out some of my Kate and Val Army units with older models of aircraft to beef up my available air units for when KB needs to hit port and restock.

I went hard after Carl's bases in Borneo but I ran all of my LBs @ altitudes around 25k. I don't think I did diddly-squat to any of the bases I attacked.

Carl had a pretty good day against some of my subs also. I'm limping home a few of them to get a little fix-n-repair.

Carl also caught a pair of my TFs trying to get to Kota Bharu. I've got a few DD and AK that might go down in a few days.

KB hits PH again... BB Oklahoma goes down...

I tapped a few of the airbases in Borneo this round but high-altitude attacks really do not do much damage.

In China I've got air units harrassing Carl's LCUs.

I'm still herding Carl's units to Singapore.

TF3 (CVLs) are stopping off for fuel and then they are off for Takao.

I'm pushing LCUs up from Thailand to Burma

I'm moving LBs and fighters to Bangkok to counter-harrass Carl's air units out of Moulmein.
