Great War AAR - crazy game - AAR starts in December 1915

Post by jjdenver »

[German turn 18]
This AAR starts after the game has been in progress for quite awhile but the game is such fun and so crazy that I thought it would be an interesting AAR since we don't currently have a Great War AAR. Libor and Martin are buddies and wanted to play on the same side so here is how it shook out:
Germany - jjdenver
AH/Ottoman - Alex
West/Italy - Libor
Russia/Serbia - Martin

The Central Powers plan at start was to both defend against Russia while AH went after Serbia to knock them out and open things up for Ottomans to move north. Germany would focus on the West.
1914-1915 events:
- Germany takes Warsaw and sets up a fairly impenetrable line in the East against Russia. Both Russia and Germany take heavy losses in a constant war of attrition but the line doesn't move much.
- AH takes heavy losses to Russia and is eventually sent tumbling back toward Budapest
- AH loses the war in Serbia and Serbia advances to take Budapest combined w/ Russians moving from the east
- Ottomans fight w/ the Brits over Damascus but lose the city and are pushed back toward Ankara
- Germany quickly takes Brussels, Lille, and finally Paris - but Paris only falls the turn after Italy is scheduled to enter the war - this Italian entry is almost prevented but not quite - by 1 turn! :(
- French while losing the war in the north advance to take Strasbourg then follow up with an offensive into Germany to take Frankfurt. The Germans respond however by cutting off the French spearheads and eventually annihilating them. This combined w/ the loss of Paris results in the almost total collapse of French forces in France and the Germans chase them west.
- Throughout the war French armored trains launch lighting attacks which greatly damage the Germans in places where they don't expect it. French and German forces take absolutely horrific losses and by Dec 1915 both armies are a shadow of their war start size.
- Italy punches across the Alps and takes Munich.

Here is a look at German losses until Dec 1915. The large spike in kills around May 1915 was the fall of Paris and the spike a couple months later in 1915 was the final destruction of the French offensive into Germany.

Here are a look at some numbers for the Germans. German army is very thin on the ground unfortunately by Dec 1915.

EDIT: Woops - I say below that Germany has lost 70 artillery. This is actually not true - I think Germany has lost a lot less than that - Germany has a total of 70 artillery remaining as the figures on the left are not German losses but are total German strength remaining. I think Germany has lost more like 20 artillery total.

Here is a look at the situation in the West as of Dec 1915. Kluck's army is chasing the French west from Paris. The Crown Prince's army has just wiped out the French incursion into Germany and is now fortifying against the Italians who hold Munich. :(

Here is a picture of the East front. Hindenburg holds a static line against Russia while a new HQ designated "Russia" appropriately enough has launched an offensive to the south to cut off the Russians who are near Budapest and relieve pressure on Austria. The Germans have also been giving Austria 20 PP for about the past 9 turns straight to try to save them.

[Germany Turn 19]
In the East German HQ Russia makes some successful attacks and Austrian attacks to retake Budapest suffer terrible losses. I am close enough to barely see the combats at Budapest since my HQ Russia is just north of the city. Usually I don't get to see what is happening w/ Austria/Serbia. :(

Note the Russians scurrying back east to prevent being cut off - relieving pressure on Budapest.

In the East a few bad things happen for Germany.

First I send an engineer on rails forward in the north against Russia since it looks like the Russian forts are deserted. Unfortunately it appears that engineers have no recon ability at all as they ride their rail cars headfirst into entrenched Russians and take horrendous losses.

Second the Russians launch a very successful counterattack against the spearhead of my offensive.

[Turn 24]
The allied landing in north France is responded to quickly by the Germans as many units are SR'ed close to the beachhead and an artillery bombardment is made. The Allies respond by abandoning their landing and sailing off. This was definitely a lesson learned. I was in the middle of starting to garrison ports in France but this scare will force me to be more prepared in the future as I was caught off balance by this.

[Turn 25 - July 21, 1916]
Russian airpower is becoming very effective on the east front as they have amassed a large number of Triplane II's. Germans are forced back in the south but make a successful assault across the river east of Warsaw.

[Turn 30 Dec 18, 1916]
The German offensive in Italy really picks up steam.

The Italian navy has been shelling the coastal road. This turn German artillery responds with some success.

Turin is surrounded, and falls after a massive battle.

The Crown Prince has manuevered into position around Munich and this turn makes a successful assault. Unfortunately his armies are over-eager and take heavy losses trying to pursue into the Alps - still this was a nice victory and Munich is finally back in German hands.

On January 1, 1917 the allied powers of Russia, Italy, Britain, France in exile, and Serbia offer surrender terms to Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire. The allied surrender is accepted and the game ends.

I think everyone had a great time with this game and it was pretty darned crazy - so much back and forth. At the end the Brits had made a successful landing in Turkey and I feared Turkey might not survive so Germany was pushing Italy and Russia very hard.

----My thoughts on this scenario is that it's pretty well done overall and quite balanced I think. The main problem is that I think counter-battery fire is just too strong and must be tuned down a little. By game end every country was afraid to manuever units - instead we would move around stacks of artillery with some infantry in the stack - was kinda silly but still fun stuff.

That was a sweet AAR. It's a shame to see it end so soon. Start another great war scenairo from the beginning i'd like to see how it plays out from the start.

If you need a player for it i'd gladly play but if not i'd love to watch the AAR :)
