Nope, Napoleon would be happy that we used the Army flag which was red / white / blue. The "modern" tricolore (blue, white, red) was only introduced officially in 1812. Before that both versions were in use.

Just for reference, check also this thread covering the french flag in the NII forums:

During the Empire, Napoleon used for this troops a flag with blue and red corners, alternativily.

After that, the french army returns to the Blue / White / Red one.

And always with the blue on the pole.
TAll other consideration and/or the reverse are totaly wrong !

La Provence is going to need a Time machine to make reality fit into his perception of it. [;)]

What I meant to say was that Artist that painted that painting in 1796 must not have know what the French Flag looked like. Was he a British Artist?

You can also propose more pictures ... and flags :
Général Bonaparte à Arcole (Gros, musée de Versailles)
Bonaparte au pont d'Arcole (par Horace Vernet)
Bataille d'Arcole (Rugendas engraving)
Augereau au pont d'Arcole (Thévenin)
Bataille d'arcole (Engraving, Cale Vernet)
..... etc, etc ....

All this illustrations represents differents flags ! [&:]
All this flags, like Augereau flag which you refere, are non reglementary flags. Official, they didn't exist.

Because in every demi-brigade (soon regiment) only ONE flag was reglementary :
BLUE WHITE RED = like now.
All the others were left to the colonnel fantasy. It was for this reason than we can see a lot of curious blue-white-red flags on the Revolutionary french army. [;)]

The second mistake is in the datation :
I think that EIA take place between 1805 and 1815 ? [8|]
So, this odd flags had disappeared since few years !

I aree with La Provence.
If you actually look at the pattern of Augereau it is Red-Blue-White. But yes, the 1796 patterns are all over the place and not well documented as far as I have found. My understanding is that in a demi brigade the 1st and 2 nd Batallion had fantasy flags while the official flag was carried by the second batallion and was the same for all demi-brigades.
But The game is strats in 1805, and so really we should either have the 1804 patter (diamond) or the 1812 pattern, Blue-white-red (modern flag).

If they didn;t exist, what exactly is Augereau carrying then?  Just a pole?

This website should put the issue to rest:

Décret du 15 Février 1794 :
"Le pavillon national sera formé des trois couleurs nationales disposées en trois bandes égales posées verticalement, de manière que le bleu soit toujours attaché à la gauche du pavillon, le blanc au milieu et le rouge flottant dans les airs."
