EOS 7.78723 - Sunny-side Up - Stopped while upgrading to new version

Post by 1EyedJacks »

EOS - wow, what a beautiful map. A lot of changes in RHS from stock - almost like a different game.

The default turn 1 has invasions by Japan in Hawaii and nearby isles, the PI, Rabaul and the New Britian area, and Hollandia.

I've dropped the invasions around New Britian and am adding a couple of bases in Borneo.

Area around Hawaii

Here's KB moving just west of PH. Air units will go after TBs will go after shipping and Port attacks while my DBs are gunna work to close down the airfield.

Image

Adding fuel to the fire TF13 with 2CA 2CL 5CVL 6DD are moving into the same area to pound the port @ PH.

TF7 transports the IJA 4th AA Rgt and the JAAF 14th Air Section along with the IJN Yokosuka Coastal Artillery Rgt to Lahaina.

TF102 has the IJA 1st Mixed Brigade also prepped for an assault @ Lahaina.

TF84 is running the IJN Yokosuka 6th SNLF to Kona

At Midway we have the IJA 6th (Amphib) B Div along with the IJA 17th Coastal Artillery Rgt. coming to play a little beach volley-ball with the Yanks.

Image

Johnston Isle will be my air-bridge into Hawaii. I'm sending a TF to soften things up for an assault of Johnston by the JNAF 102nd Aviation Bat, the IJA 42nd Road Construction Bat., the IJN 3l8 CSNLF Bde., and the IJN 2 Machine Cannon AA Bat.
Image

Headed to Wake are the 2nd Maizuru SNLF, the IJA 6th Mixed AA Rgt., the IJA67th Ind. Const. Bat., and the IJA 1st Tank Co.

If your playing level 7, that map is SWEET. [&o][&o]

Looking at the screenshots of AE, I like this map better. Nicer "eye candy." [:D]

John III has said how much different it is units wise than stock and other mods.

I hope you get your butt kicked.

And rasberries to you to - NY59Giants <laughter>

Yeah - amphib units - too cool!

I'm really ramping up production in Japan. I've got production initially set to take Zeke frames up to 200/month and Bettys up to 190/month. I've bumped up Arm, Vehicle, N. Shipyards also. I've sent 4 AK in to be modified as ARs and 2 more AK as MLEs. I will want to deploy ARs to the front as well as keep a few back in Japan at my large repair yards.
I have very few Zekes and Claudes in production or in the pool. Scary as they are, from what I can tell, the premere fighters in the Pacific during this time frame. Me109T Mikes will come on line in January of 42 but they have very short legs. I'll have to use these primarily for CAP of my bases.

Borneo and Palembang look like they should be my high priorities - I need lotsa oil! I've got a para unit jumping into Miri on turn 1 from Saigon (which is pretty cool <grin>).

I need to push thru Malaya fast, take over Singapore and drive into Palembang and Java ASAP.

With my initial assaults in the the pacific I'll need to funnel supplies, troops, and air units to the isles to beef up my defensive perimeter.

China looks like a bad situation. I'll post some pics later and hope for some suggestions. It is interesting, I think, to see resource centers in China...

Here's China on 12-7-41. Many of the Chinese units in the field are gorilla units. With the need to garison all of the bases there's not much I can build on to create a strong attack force. Not many ENG units for support or dropping down the fortification levels either.

Right now I plan to pull a few support units (ENG Engineers, Aviation, and Support) from Manchuko and probably a couple of divisons of home defense units to Jion the China command. It'll cost me some political points but that's what they're there for.

I want to try and use some of the river transport to leapfrog along the river bases on Carl just to try it out. Not a lot of shipping available for this tho...

I'll start the whole thing off by doing a lot of strategic bombing of airfields to stop Carl from forting up while I try to get my crap together.

Just a note on the pictures: I'm using photobucket.com to display images I uploaded in this AAR. This is pretty cool as I can basically give visuals of anything I want to talk about in this AAR.

A fellow RHS'er.

Good luck and have fun with the game. I hope to learn a lot from your AAR, so that I can use it against the evil side. [;)]
If you gained knowledge through the forum, why not putting it into the AE wiki?

Hi Mistmatz,

I'm in the learning process myself. Initially I wanted to bypass the invasion of Hawaii but I was having difficulties selecting alternative targets with my KB and assault TFs way out @ Kawajalien. I read what John was doing in his game with Michael (NY59Giants) but I didn't really want to do that either. Invading Hawaii because I "have nothing better to do with the troops" is really bad logic but this is how Japan is set on T1 in EOS.

My biggest concern is the reduction in range of my shipping - basically the endurance is cut in half. I think running supplies to all of those forward bases in the Pacific is going to be a strain on my resources and my escort ships. I feel I don't have enough DDs/DEs/PCs/PGs as it is and now what I have will be spread thinner with the need for additional convoys due to the reduced "legs" of my merchant marines.

Part of my turn 1 attack is to really thrash the port at Manila from Formosa. I hope that I can put a dent in the subs and provide a few months slack while additional escort craft are being produced.

Instead of Hawaii, and with most of the oil @ Borneo, I really wanted to pound Malaya and the northern coast of Borneo. I have a para unit going to Miri on T1 and I've deverted the units that were set for Rabaul to hit Tarakan - we'll see how things go.

Also, with half the Japanese Navy @ Kwajalein we decided to turn off the December 7 suprise. With a forward deployment of Japan's Navy, if the US didn't at least have contingency plans for an attack of Hawaii then the American leaders truely had their heads up their tail-pipes.

One thing I did that is a little off the hook is tell Carl (GoodBoyLaddie) he could move Force Z anywhere he wants on T1. I know how much he likes to play with that TF and this is a game after all... He'll have a blast using it and I'll have a blast sinking it and we'll both be happy [:D][:D]

Another change in production that I 4got to mention is shutting down all RD on the frames. El Cid recommends this in the RHS Handbook to force production to ramp up as it would in real life.

Oh - and watch out for engine production. I was suprised at the different engine types being used by the airframes. I bumped up engine production to meet my planned needs but I see I'll really have to watch my reserve pools to make sure I don't build a zillion engines I can't use.

Ahh the turn 1 Combat report. I'll flesh things out in later posts along with pictures of what's going on.

I guess because Carl was running ships out of PH, I didn't do anything to the BBs in port. I did pound the crap out of his air field tho.

The Vildebeest are my most effective anti-shipping plane in the SRA early in the war. All LBA bombers have greater range in RHS, so watch out. [:D]
If your worried about his ASW ships, then go after the old Flush Decks (Clemson/Wilkes Class) as they all upgrade on 1/1/42 to an ASW factor of 8 (just like in CHS). I only lost 2 and the rest will be coming out to "play" in about 7 to 10 days.
Flak has killed more than my a2a to date, especially around Singapore and Manila, so go in at a higher atlitude.

I see Boise is still afloat. [:D][&o][:D]

Hi Michael,

Yeah - I was noticing losses in Malaya vs losses @ Midway from his CV squadrons... I was wondering if his air units @ Singapore had a markedly higher EXP level. SBDs on the carriers have an armor rating of 1 - right? And Vildebeasts have an armor rating of 0?

I hear U on altitude also. I'm getting good hits with my LBs @ 12k. It looks like Carl is still coming in @ 6k and I'm tapping his air units with pretty high losses. Of course, as U know, the EXP level is really low for the allies @ the start of the war.

I'm not sure what to set my DBs @ tho... If I run them @ a high altitude then they go thru multiple levels of flak and I'll eat more losses - right? I'm building Ju88s to see how they fair as DBs. And Mikes in January - I can hardly wait! And the Yamato - kippee-yi-yea! I wonder where that damned Boise is... [:D]

I thought for DB's, you set them above 15k if you go against CV's to put them in 9 planes groups and below for other targets (4 plane groups). IMO, Vals have high losses regardless of what mod your playing vs Kates. I usually set them at 11k for everything but CV's and then go up to 16k. They drop their bomb load at 2k regardless. If you set them low then all that small caliber AA gets a shot. [:(]

In my PBEM game I just took over (late 6/42) I have the Boise and her sisters intact and soon will get my Fletcher Class DD's. That combo will do some serious damage to most CA's and smaller ships. [:D][:D] As long as I stay away from "Torpedo Betty." [;)]

The game engine gives you bonus in first turn, you would never get the same good result with those Japanese craps later. So the good result in first turn is actually rather misleading for Jap side.

Hi Trollelite,

In most cases I'd agree with you, however in this game we turned Suprise off... This should be a normal turn precessed just like any other.

I was kind of shocked to see about 30 Val go down to flak @ Pearl. Having read more of the design process for RHS tho, it looks like a higher than normal flak loss is expected. The mod does seem to model forcing attacking air units to a higher altitude...

Wow - this looks crummy! That's over 300 LB attacking from 11-12k... Can I ask the date and game/mod these results came from? This isn't RHS is it? I mean, you have overwhelming air superiority with your zeroes - your bombers should be flying in fat and happy...

Hey Michael,

I thought if you wanted larger groups of DBs to attack the same target you took them up to 15k but if you wanted attack groups of 3-4 planes you bring them in around 9-10k... I always went with the 3-4 attack groups with DBs under the assumption that if I spread the bombs it makes cripples that are hard to get out of range for future follow-up strikes.

And I thought for TBs if you run them above 10k they have a higher percentage of bombs instead of torpedoes (or that was the claim I remember reading from some of the vetrans when I first started playing this game...).

Nope...any TB's or DB's set above 15k will try to come in as a 9 plane group. Torpedoes or bombs is a simple (no such thing in WitP [:D]) die roll. [;)]

Only set them above 15k when you expect CV's and maybe BB's later in the war when their AA gets over 1000. Anything else may result in overkill..the dreaded cannot find target message. [:(] That ship was sunk. [:D]

Michael, have you SEEN the AA values in RHS EOS? <laughter> 3 DDs and a CL will give a rating over 1k... I'll play with the ranges and see if I can find something that works but in this mod I might just set my TB/DB @ 20k for all missions...

I have real issues with the AAA in RHS. Perhaps it is more 'realistic' but I am appalled at the amount of losses day after day on what should be milk runs...
